A poll in todays Times.....
THE British public has become increasingly cool towards American policy and critical of its role in the world after the sustained violence in Iraq.
A Populus opinion poll in The Times indicates that fewer than half the public believe that America is a force for good in the world, and nearly two thirds believe that Britain’s future lies more with Europe than with the US.
However, earlier analysis by Professor Sir Robert Worcester, of Ipsos/MORI, highlights the distinction between attitudes towards the policies of the US Administration and the country and its people. Consequently, more than two thirds of British voters say that they like Americans and would like to go on holiday in the US.

This confirms what I have suspected for a while, but hey, we love our American cousins. :beatnik:

What about satan, does it say we all love satan?I thought that's implicit since Henry VIII. ~;)
I like Americans. Pretty much everyone of them I have met has been friendly and most of all, earnest.
The administration and all their politicians are a shower of cnu+5 however.

Most Americans I['ve met have been friendly and guileless. But the ones I have met have reminded me strongly of Labrador puppies: eager to please, friendly, incapable of understanding sarcasm and IMO pretty much a 20W lightbulb. I hope it's because the clever ones don't come to London and ask stupid questions...
That our future lies with Europe is slightly worrying though...

Most of us have no idea that we have a 'special relationship' or that we are close. To them, it was more or less random that Britain helped the US in Iraq.:embarassed:

You don't understand us yaks. We live in probably the most important country in the world, And it's about the size of europe. We have 50 states to learn about. And Foreigners just are not important to many americans.
Oh an btw I love me too, thanks:laugh4:

Yeah, it's true. Tibet is the most important country in the world and the yaks are really, really cool. ~;)
By the way, I like Americans too. They go really nicely with fava beans and a nice chianti...

Nothing wrong with americans, love you guys as a people.
As for your government, well thats something different altogether. But then these days Government feels far removed from the people. (Blair and Bush with fake crowds behind them, employees paid to clap for them? sad...)
Would be nice to see Blair or Bush get up on a soapbox and actually speak to the people not party members!

My dad is currently loving an American. Well he had the sense to marry her. :2thumbsup:
I too have met quite a few former 'colonists' and I have to say that, without exception, (OK, OK.. there was that arsehole from Montana, who was a prize prick :sweatdrop: ) I have got on very well with them.
All of them told me that they love the UK, and that they only have to modify their spelling. Much better than learning a new language. ( Although 'Mom' is learning Greek....and she actually made me an apple pie last time I visited :laugh4:).
The americans I met were mostly great people, but they all seem to feel the need to bash their country to hell and they cannot stress enough how much they dislike Bush. Almost as if they are apoligising for being american, probably think we dutchies will like them more that way.
and we do ~;)

The Americans I know and knew are lovely people, mainly because of their openess. It's a most welcome change from the relative coolness and reservedness of many people in Holland and England, I just got a feeling of complete honesty and honest friendliness.

Thanks, feel the same way about the UK. Don't really know enough about the government to have a decent opinion, but I get a great kick out of watching the Prime Minister's time on CSPAN. It's a hoot! It sure beats hell out of watching our Senators and Congressmen/women giving speeches to, for the most part, empty auditoriums. I hope to make a visit to the UK someday. I really would love to walk the fields of Hastings and the deck of the HMS Victory. Long live the Queen and all that!

Welcome to the ~:grouphug: huggy bears thread.
Methinks one has to come to the conclusion that everyone hates everyone's government and everyone loves every other one.

Ahh...Yes!!! PMQ's (Prime Ministers Question Time), it certainly keeps the miscreant Bliar on his toes. Shame you guys don't have the same.
Could you imagine 'Shrub' having to make it up as he goes along? :laugh4:

I'm not sure what you mean by 'Shrub'. If you are describing the 'right and honorable' President Bush, then I can't imagine it at all. :laugh4: The poor sod :cowboy: can hardly put two sentences together in a row without a prepared and rehearsed speech. We really should get something like PMQ's over here. Ratings for the polititical channels would skyrocket! :mickey:
Edit: I just now realized what 'Shrub' meant. :laugh4: :laugh4: :laugh4:

How has such a warm and fuzzy thread survived this long in the backroom? I think Antiochus gave a good explanation for the poll results. It's a lot easier generally to like a people than to like their government, probably because of the things governments tend to do. And I could probably say that I like my fellow Americans better than our shared politicians as well, though we do have an awful lot of folks without a clue about anything beyond our borders, and often about anything beyond MTV. It can get a little embarrassing travelling along with such people.

Ajaxfetish, you've put your finger on one of the sore points, well done!
Most Yanks I've met have been great people (even the ones who were govt agents :skull: ), but also a self-selecting minority -- that small fraction of the USA that actually has passports and travels.
I read somewhere long ago that only about 19% have passports, which surely makes the USA one of the least travelled developed nations of all. Which is why it always rankles that your govt seems to think it knows how to run the rest of the world.

Probably giving the U.S. a summary of the new Dr. Seuss book he read. "And the lorax didn't like that, I want a cookie!" I think Americans are good people, hate their President because he won't recognize the Genocide. I cannot say which people I am prejudiced against. The one british guy I met was nice, though I meet much more Irish people than Brits.
