TEHRAN, Iran - Iran and the United States had a rare moment of agreement Tuesday, using similar language to describe “positive steps” toward an accord on a package of incentives aimed at persuading Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment.

Diplomats said the incentives include a previously undisclosed offer of some U.S. nuclear technology on top of European help in building light-water nuclear reactors. Other incentives include allowing Iran to buy spare airplane parts and support for joining the World Trade Organization.

Tehran is under intense international pressure to accept the deal in exchange for putting on hold a uranium enrichment program that the West fears could lead to the creation of nuclear weapons.

Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, said the proposals had “positive steps” but that talks were needed to clear up ambiguities. Iran promised to study the proposals seriously but gave no timeframe for a response.

And Bush, using the same language, said Iran’s initial response “sounds like a positive step.”

“We will see if the Iranians take our offer seriously,” the president said in Laredo, Texas. “The choice is theirs to make. I have said the United States will come and sit down at the table with them so long as they are willing to suspend their enrichment in a verifiable way.”

If the US supplies Iran with nuclear technology, it becomes politically difficult to justify an attack on Iran in the future on those grounds. It's all about security, and the Neocons' boneheaded sabre-rattling and ignoring of international norms. By rattling their own sabre while remaining strictly within international agreements, the Iranians have got what they wanted, which is security against attack by the US, plus a bonus package of other concessions (they're still adding to the list, knowing they've effectively been given a carte blanche). People may wish to argue if the Bush administration has been good for the US or for the world, but it's certainly been good for Iran.

Especially considering the fact that in 50 years THERE WILL BE NO OIL LEFT. This is not superstition or rant. It is scientifically proven that if we use oil at the rate we are now we will have no oil by 2050. Chances are it will be sooner as we will most likely increase in the amount of oil the world consumes.

I think we should get our stuff together and just get the heck out of the middle eat. Jesus maybe that’s why they hate us so much? We are there for the oil and in a few instances to fight terrorism. Any other reason is secondary.

On topic though. I don't think they will accept the proposal. The Iranians have made it clear that they will accept no deal that makes them stop suspending uranium. The US has made it clear it will only work with them once they stop suspending. Eh...

This breakthrough is surprising indeed, and for the better. But I hope the idiots in the government know what techs they are going to give, especially now that Iran has basically gotten the clean sheet to write a long list of demands on.

Pannonian, got it right - but, I don't believe it is a clean sheet or allows for open demands from Iran. It does, however, force Iran into a possition of compliance with the UN sanctions concerning nuclear development, or face economic sanctions from even their good buds in China and Russia (er, maybe).

I seriously doubt the Iran leadership will comply, believing their "oil card" as being the only trump they need to encourage some States (atleast China) to ignore what ever sanctions maybe applied.

Further, it is only a win for Iran if they cease their uranium enrichment program, and allow UN inspectors into "all" their nuclear facilities. Sound at all familiar? [reference UN sanctions imposed on Iraq - prior to US invasion]

Things were getting a bit too close to an actual agreement that would avert war, so Bush and co have decided to hot things up again. No guarantees against US aggression, an unrealistically tight deadline, changed criteria, it's Iraq all over again.
