Apple iPods more popular than beer

Carl Taylor, vnunet.com 09 Jun 2006

A survey among US college students has found that Apple's iconic iPod music player is more popular than beer.

The news was delivered in the most recent study by Student Monitor, a US organisation which reports on a number of student-based surveys and studies carried out at US universities.

Student Monitor asked participants to rate various items as 'in'. The list covered items as diverse as text messaging, downloading music and bar hopping.

The iPod topped the list with a 73 per cent approval rating from the 1,200 students questioned. Apple's player won the affections of only 59 per cent last year.

But this year, 'drinking beer' also had digital competition from social networking site Facebook, which held joint second place as most popular activity with 71 per cent of the vote.

Drinking beer has only been knocked from the top spot once in the 18 years the survey has been conducted, Eric Weil, a managing partner at Student Monitor, told Associated Press.

In 1997 the internet proved to be most popular item with the student population.

That's because beer is becoming almost as institutionalized as cigarettes; you have to pay a lot more for quality beer, and "popular" beers all taste the same.

Me- I don't have an ipod, but I don't drink beer either. I prefer hard liquor, which has a lot more individuality between brands. Costs more, but it's worth it. I may be wrong about this, but the more alcoholic drinks (gin, whiskey, liquers, even wine) seem to be gaining popularity because of this.

Don't see what the fuss is about the iPod, though. An MP3 is one tenth of the price and stores more than enough for you to be entertained for a helluva long time.

Myself, I just skip music altogether.

I've had my (first generation) iPod for over three years now, and no complaints from me. But better than beer? It's debateable.

'Hey, are you up for going down the pub?'

'No, sorry, I have to listen to my iPod.'

*shudder*

Thankfully, I'm going to Uni in the UK.

So, does drinking beer mean you're dissociated from the trendy iPod crowd? That wouldn't be so bad at all..

This just means that more people in total listen to their iPod than people who are prone to drinking beer. No one said they prefer one activity over the other. College students are wussying out with alcohol anyways.
