Hello, recently, because im not doing any modding, and with the long wait until medieval 2, i am getting a little bit bored.

Now, i would like to make an independant mini mod, for either RTW or BI, but i simply cannot think of any ideas that either interest me, or that havent been done yet.

Please could people suggest ideas here, so that i can have something to do for a while:2thumbsup:

Could you not help out one of the many mods struggling to complete? There are many to choose from...or you could sub mod and indirectly help out. What is your area of skill, and your area of interest (historical period/genre etc.)?

Regarding ideas / suggestions for an independent mini-mod, why not create a faction or two that are not too common in the existing mods currently available? If you're willing to create the units from scratch and have enough ideas for faction unit rosters, then that should keep you more than busy for a while. Here's a few faction examples (for RTW unless otherwise stated):

Illyrians
Etruscans
Samnites
Moors (for BI)
Boii
Sarmatians
Chinese (obviously for larger maps)
Saka
Alani
I'm sure there are many more you've thought of yourself, what do you think?

Seconded. Not many people are waiting for yet another mod, but there are many people waiting for mods that are struggling to get finished; particularly when it comes to models and skins, which I seem to recall you are good at.

Well, I will always let a mod have any skins or models i make, it is only fair that people can use my works. However, i feel that personally, that i havent made anything that i can look back on and proudly say 'i did this'.

To be honest, i would be happy for any mod to use any of my stuff, but, in all honesty, i do not want to join any other mods for now. I know they struggle to complete, but at the same time, i feel that it is a modder's right to do what they would like over what is 'needed', after all, it is only a hobby.

Actually, I may just make a couple of 'unofficial' factions to replace some vanilla ones like seasoned alcoholic suggested, it would be quite fun yet allow me some time to make some skins and models for use by mods.

I liek the ancient era, but i feel like every conceivable unit from the rome period has been perfected time and time again, so i dont know what units to do.

My experience working with MODS is most end up being disbanded and the Mod never released. Or worse, the MOD gets political or autocratic. Both times the experience was miserable and I will never again do it.

I've completely redone the skins for BI, the Traits system, added the hordes capability for 4 more factions, completely redone the unit strengths and weakness. I also added a complete new unit roster for the Sassasoids and Berbers, and added 7 new units for the barb factions. All of these using vanilla style coloring schemes and vanilla style unit cards. I used existing models like the axe heerban and ported it over to all factions through simple recoloring.

I did that strictly for my own enjoyment. I don't have to hear any complaining, 'suggestions', or do something that offends my sensibilities because of someone trying to lord over me.

That I understand completely! Nothing sucks the pleasure out of modding more than being told how to do something by someone who can't do it themselves :dizzy2:

A good mod team can be great, providing everyone is working in the same direction. Personally..I work better as a team of one :laugh4:

IF you are still bored and looking for something to do...do something like I did with the 'skeleton' mod for RTW. Just make a new set of themed models to replace a faction. Comedy characters....cartoons....animals. I think a set of Simpsons characters to replace a BI faction .... say...saxons...would be fun!

Maybe a race of H R Giger style Aliens .....

Interesting remarks of life in a mod team. I prefer to work as a team of one because I have very definate idea's of what I want to achieve, and do not wish to compromise or dilute these idea's. However very few of us have the time and/or the multi skills to make a total conversion alone.

What do you fellow modders think of a sort of mod club, where membership requires one to be a contributer. With all work being made available for club members/contributers to combine into their own mod(s)

e.g. Skinners/modellers/mappers etc. make what they feel like making when they feel like making it. Creating a pool of material for the members to draw from.
A key factor to make this work would be that only members can use this material to encourage others to learn to mod and not simply get a free ride, so to speak. As we all know, art ceases to be art when it is produced to a deadline and/or some other persons demand.

Well, what do you guys think ?

i love that idea, a sort of 'free rights' club, where you have to have contributed, but in return, you get to use other peoples things

Sounds like an interesting concept, could work out well for teaching people how to mod beyond their current abilities, but as for actually getting a seriously intended mod completed that way, could potentially be impossible.

I feel the greatest works of art are created only when you allow someone the right of creative license. "This is my basic idea...now do whatever you want with it." Like Picasso's "Guernica". They wanted him to paint the town...so he painted the town, but I doubt they expected it to turn out like that. :laugh4: Still..a work of art.

Just going back to one of the original points, I don't think working in a mod team is any less interesting as long as you have some creative control. Working for a team leader who can't mod themselves is indeed very frustrating but if you are just part of a team then you can usually have control of what you do. Even in historically accurate mods like mine there are always different interpretations of uniforms and you have some creative control.

If you are bored and want to mod then joining a mod team will probably make you more bored but then again if you cant think of things to do yourself isn't it ironic to be asking us? Surely if we tell you what to do then it's just like being part of a team with a team leader telling you what to do...

very good point there actually, but, to be honest im just gonna practice skinning and modeling for a while, but if anybody wants me to do a skin for them then I am willing to do one or two, I just dont want the commitment of being in a team.

Why won't you work for EB? :embarassed:

Or for example, help Cegorach for PMTW, Sundjata for Zulu and perhaps me with AoVaF: TW.
