I didn't know the RTR forums were hacked, are you sure? has it been verified?
also, I don't see how RTR's hacking necesarily means the hacker population has increased and is on the march for EB. And what on earth does it have to do with the quality/finish date of EB??? :inquisitive: (or RTR even? does getting hacked reflect poorly on its quality as a mod?)
bad news about RTR though...ah well, I hope they can resolve the issue...

I don't think it says much of anything along those lines. It's sad to hear. They have big forums over there and their members talk about lots of other things like that. We are just present here and at the twc board for EB, so we have a lower profile for sure, and don't want to get drawn into a situation where the people who targeted them might do the same to boards that we are on. It says nothing else about the mod itself other than that though.

And it has been verified, yesterday there was a giant sign saying that the Turkish hackers have hacked this site Blah blah blah blah.

oh, I missed that. All I saw was that "directory listing denied" thing. And I agree with Teleklos, I don't think it'll move anywhere (at least I hope not :shame: ) this is probably some prank or mean joke, not organized RTW-mod-raiding. I don't know a lot about cyber-space, how long does it take to regain control after someone hacks you? maybe this is an elaborate trick and they're about to release 7.0 tomorrow! :idea2:
If someone has hacked RTR, it means they have something against RTR, so then why would they hack RTR's competition?
It was probably that slimey fatso who was stealing money from them who hacked them anyway. The guy who runs the fake RTR site...
Seems like a large number of forums are being hacked by scripts lately.... Has TW taken any preventive measures?

i hope you are right....7.0 would be excellent....but i fear that will not happen.
Anyway they had a trojan/keylogger which had send itself with a .wmf-file to all/most forum-users with IE.
I think they are off while removing this issue.
(i have IE too, but any scans with various anti-spyware-tools shows no problems so far)
If someone has hacked RTR, it means they have something against RTR, so then why would they hack RTR's competition? Because we are not really RTR competition, but just EB? Actually, another bunch of volunteers that spend insane amounts of their time working to build a great game from the promising basis CA delivered. Just like RTR...

Shoudn't hacking be Illegal?
Should be, but as far as US law and my knowledge of it is concerned, its only illegal when money gets involved, and I've never heard of anyone getting caught for some of the minor stuff.

i seem to remember certain kinds are. but internet laws in most countrys are at least 5 years behind anything and debated and discussed by people who have little knowledge or live experiance with computers in general, and who listen to "experts" who see things as "dead straight" and do not account for human behaviour and thoughtfullness (ie hacking), so they live in a nice seperate world :)
Went a couple of days back. Some Java thing installed something on my computer before I could close it. Only just got back from formatting and reinstalling. It wasn't too bad though, had plenty of time to backup all my goodies. But its so annoying that such a thing can happen. No more using Windows Explorer. It’s FireFox all the way for me now.

Guys, as one of the RTR forum moderators, I think it's time to clear things up a bit.
The RTR forums were, indeed, hacked. A few days ago the main page (index.php) was infected with a virus; a simple php exploit that infected IE users' computers with a keylogger (Firefox and Opera users were not affected). Then yesterday, the index.php file was hacked once more, and the whole forum was replaced with a few lines of text and some interesting music. I didn't see the page myself, but apparently it linked to some hacking group's forum.
Now, everything seems to have been fixed by the admins, and the virus *seems* to have been removed successfully. The hack didn't damage any actual data, it just affected the file that allows you to view it (index.php). We do not know of any particular reason for the attack, and while some fingers were pointed at certain disgruntled ex-members, the general stance is that it was probably a random attack; from what I've heard, other gaming forums have been under attack for quite some time as well, it just happened to be us that was next to be hit.
In any case, the forum is working and back to normal now. I strongly suggest that if you've visited the RTR forums within the last week or two to run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN just to make sure, even if you're a Firefox, Opera or Safari user. If you plan on visiting the RTR forums, it's strongly suggested that you have your anti-virus (and/or firewall) program running while you are there, and if any alerts pop up please let us know immediately.
Thank you.
Glad to hear things are (tentatively) under control.
Thanks for the explanation, Cheexsta.

lol, what is it? and why not install some free decent stuff?
bit weird actually, i was on a school pc on RTR site and it said a virus had been found and promptly shut down all my windows. it was located in your temp window's files, so clean that out mate.

Problem with many viruses is that you can't simply "delete" them as you would most files. They seem to start up some background process on your computer, making it think the file is in use and therefore cannot be shut down. That's where a decent anti-virus comes in; they often have the ability to kill a virus when the computer is next started, before any other processes start.
Anyway, the virus seems to have been coming and going since the attack. For now, it seems to have stopped, but until we get the whole thing patched up nice and tightly, I suggest you keep those anti-virus things going (which you should, anyway ~D). A good piece of anti-virus software is Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/), you can download a 30-day free trial from their site. I'm not a huge fan of their firewall, but the anti-virus is top notch.
