in case the little dears hurt themselves...
A teenager was shocked when police refused to chase joyriders who had just stolen his moped - because the thieves were not wearing helmets.
Max Foster, 18, called 999 when he saw three youths take his machine in Bath in the early hours of Tuesday.
An officer told him they could not give chase in case the unprotected thieves fell off the bike and sued the police.

Surprised ? ? ? No.
The stupidity of modern policing has reached the stage where nothing will shock me anymore. Criminals are innocent until proven that there is no possibility of a law suit against the police. Even people in prisons are sueing nowadays because they claim the conditions are innhumane - I suppose they would be the expert on what's innhumane, afterall they have bludgeoned their families to death with their own shoes.
At least things like this still surprise you.
So seatbelt laws are irrelevant?
Anyways should'nt they have gotten a ticket for riding w/o a helmet?

You can't really give them a ticket if you don't chase them cause then you don't know where they went.:dizzy2:

Yes I read that in the paper this morning.
Yet another example of what has happened to our once great country under this left wing liberal do gooders bunch of :furious3:
I dunno about this one; say he did fall off on a chase and died of catastrophic head injuries (and forget about all the suing etc), wouldn't the officers themselves feel wretched? Sure, the yobs stole the moped, but a wee fake-bike and someones life aren't even close to the same thing. On the other hand, you far-righters will say its a risk the joyriders take, but noone was arguing the other corner, so i reckon i should step in...

Yeah, there are crazy people with no sense of morality who should be shot in the face (child rapist/ killers etc), but not everyone in prison is evil surely? Rehabilitation? Maybe you don't believe in it, but thats what prisons are intended for aren't they? Otherwise we'd be like china and kill everyone...

So when should the cops chase someone ? Only when they know the criminals committed murder ? After all, in any chase it's possible for the criminals to get hurt, and possible die. By your logic, we should only take that chance when their crime is equal to the loss of their life; the only thing equal to that is, imo, taking another life.
So if they just rape and beat the hell out of your/my family, we should just let them go, 'cause they didn't kill anybody, and they might fall down and die after escalating a fence ?

The point I was making is that people in prison should perhaps not be the people to consult on how we run our prison service. If they don't like conditions in prisons - perhaps they shouldn't have committed a crime. If prisons were nice places then people wouldn't have so many qualms about being arrested. There is already a dangerous situation in this country where the homeless will commit crimes so they are imprisoned because the way we treat our nations criminals is seen as superior to the way we treat our homeless.

I´m not far-right, but I still say that.
If there is no risk in commiting crimes then we can just as well abandon the police and wish everybody good luck in a state of anarchy.
Maybe we should invent new laws for how locks can be built so thieves won´t hurt their fingers while picking the locks...:dizzy2:
And don´t forget to take the glass out of your windows, a burglar might cut himself and sue you... :wall:

What's so revolutionary about police giving up a vehicle chase? Whatever their duty might be it is certainly not to put more people in danger.
Abandoning a car chase is self-explanatory: a car is relatively heavy and moves fast. There's danger not only to the driver/passengers but to innocent bystanders. Better just get the plates out and wait until they stop for coffee.
A moped? Well, it's not that heavy or fast, but it's small. Do you know what the idiots riding them do when someone chases them? They try to get away by going places you can't follow with a car. Narrow walkways, areas full of pedestrians, sometimes even indoors. It's somewhat dangerous to them even with helmets, and there's still a chance to hurt bystanders.
You don't shoot people for stealing apples straight from your apple tree, do you? Same principle here. A moped isn't reason enough for the risk of causing serious injury to the thief or bystanders.
Then use a helicopter...:idea2:
Once they are out of sight, chances are pretty low you´ll get your moped back I think.
