View Full Version : will there be slowdowns?
I noticed that the 1.2 version runs way slower than most of the 1.5 mods and even the vanilla 1.5. I wonder why this is so. Am I gonna need an upgrade to play 0.8? I can run Res Getesae without any problems despite the hi rez models on my old and trusty rig.

The best solution for slowdowns is, for some reason, an upgrade of the graphics card. My turns passed at 5-6mins each, and after upgrading my RAM to 1024mb there was no reduction in time. I then upgraded my gfx card from a 5200 128mb to a 6600GT 256mb and now my turn times rarely go over 30secs.
Graphic Cards are the way to go if you do wish to upgrade.

so people (aka me) might not have the money however.... and on 0.74 the extreme loading times were one of the reasons i could carry on playing... however i'm glad to hear it will be faster in 0.8
did you find out why it was so slow? or was just the huge amount of new stuff?

Why EB 0.74 is somewhat slow:
-Regarding the battles, it's the fact that some units don't have the lower resolution 3d models yet. That severelly hampers performance when the camera zooms out.
-Regarding the campaign map, the sheer map size, the higher density of forests and the enormous size of the EB script all contribute to slow down the strategic part of the game.
Why EB 0.8 is faster than 0.74:
-RTW 1.5 has some graphical optimizations and that helps make 0.8 faster than 0.74 in the campaign and battle maps.
I can assure you that 1.0 will be faster in battles than 0.74 and 0.8, because, by that time, all lower resolution 3d models will be in-game. In regard to the strategic map, it will probabaly still be faster than in 0.74...
I get the biggest slowdowns on the campaign map. Then again I have
16XFSAA on.

Want more speed? Turn it to 2xFSAA...

Footactually in a RTW 1.5 i run it quite fast. (upgraded RAM to 1GB) but of course had to use less video options as i have a intel grahpics.
I use a matrox card (the 3 year old Parhelia) so the 16XFSAA comes only costs 25% penalty on the framerate but looks like candy

It plays SPQR 6.1 on huge 1600X1200 without a hiccup

Yes that makes plenty of sense for one SPQR does not have a background script like EB's and the map used (Warmap I believe) while it has quite a large scale it lacks the detail of EB's map.
As for the battle map the SPQR units have all the lower resolution 3d models in-game and as Aymar de Bois Mauri was saying EB does not yet.
