View Full Version : New Canadian Air Force
Canada is about to spend billions on new transport planes. For us, this is a very big deal.
The controversial part is buying four C-17 Globemasters. We're spending $250,000,000 on each of them and another billion or two on multi-year service contracts. At first I thought the government's desire for the C-17 was simple plane-envy towards the US Air Force, but given the size of our country and the natural disasters we enjoy, these will give us excellent response capabilities. They will also allow us to deliver serious humanitarian aid all over the world. We're a big country in a big world and and we need big planes. Looking forward to seeing one of these with the flag on it. :canada:

The not so controversial part is the aquisition of seventeen new C-130J transports. Everyone in the country knows we need these. Long overdue.

Word has it we may be getting the new F-35 to replace our CF-18s as well. But this is years away at best. We're also buying over 2000 new trucks for the army. (Apparently Goofball complained about the old ones and someone took him seriously.)
Now if we can just figure out what do to about helicopters, we'll be set.
Just one more reason for us to fear Canada.

You'll like those transports Beirut. They can take off a short run way and do a lot of amazing moves. You can fit atleast 3 zambonis on the C-130 with plenty of room for hockey sticks, axes, and whatever Canadians occupy themselves with these days.:2thumbsup:

I thought that pretty much covered it ~;p I can see why they're controversial: flying hockey rinks could have been built locally cheaper, most likely ~:joker:
Seriously now, so these are all just gonna be used for rapid intervention forces in case of disasters and the like ?

Canada is now a country ruled by tyranny, as that is the only reason they would need these WMDs, which are cleverly disguised as planes.
American invasion commences in thirty minutes. :laugh4:

At least you buy them, we lease all out planes and they end up costing even more.
Well, we can't teach the Westerners how to make proper poutine, so maybe now, we can just ship it there.

So have you not had any C-130's before now?
Congratulations on the new toys anyway!:2thumbsup:
Yet another reason that VT should secede and join Canada, I could still have C-130's fly over my house periodically!

We have lots of C-130s, but they're past retirement. It's testament to our armed forces mechanics that the planes still fly.
The fact that our decades old Sea King helicopters fly at all should earn the mechanics Nobel Prizes in physics.
By the by, Vermont is welcome any time you care to drop in. :shakehands:
OK, tell the truth all you other non-Canadians out there...
When you first saw the topic of this thread you thought it was going to have a pic of something like a goose with goggles. Admit it!
Now you'll be able to move your Hockey team from game to game in record time!
On the serious side glad to see it. You do need those birds.
you mean this is NOT the Canadian Airforce???

Mom! Barocca's scaring me! First he finds two previously unknown custom folders for MTW modding then he posts a top secret pic of the Canadian Airforce doing dangerous top secret maneuvers! I think he's been replaced by aliens, and we should start seaching for a pod! :sweatdrop:
Oh, and you Canadians! I'm just messing with you. I have a great deal of respect for the Canadian Air Force. Back in my Navy days, over 25 years ago, the Canadian Orion crews routinely kicked everyone else's behinds in wargames, finding subs. They embarrassed a couple of fast attack skippers pretty completely.

Nice to see that Canada is doing its bit to expand (or at least prevent decreases in) the prowess of All Her Majesty's Armed Forces.

Those C-17s look like the C-5s(?), which are so huge and appear to move so slow it make you wonder how they stay up in the air. They just look so unnatural in the sky - like if you saw a ship anchor or large boulder flying. :dizzy2:

Yep, C-5 Galaxy. They just don't look quite real in the air. Like some odd slow motion effect is taking place. Top speed is about 500 knots, but it just doesn't ever look like it's going that fast.

C-17s kick ass. The RAF is flying the wings off theirs, and we've gone and ordered another 5, even though we are already in the A400 programme.
There was a lot of embaressment in Canada after the Tsunami, when their swanky, hi-tech (and expensive) disaster response team sat around for a week as there were no Canadian transports capable of airlifting it and they had to hire a Russian An-124. I think that played a big part in the decision. Couple that with long deployments in places like Afghanistan, and a head of the CAF who is not afraid to slag of the politicians (in public) for not funding the CAF properly and you get some nice new toys ~:)
You've actually got a pretty good deal, as Boeing is closing down the production line soon, so its been like a last minute deal ~:D The RAAF got a similar deal. I know a ex-USAF mechanic on another forum who used to work on C-141s and C-17s, and he raves about the C-17s maintainability.
As for the C-130Js, I do know that customers (RAF, USAF) haven't been that impressed with it - the herky bird is one of the greatest planes of all time, but opinion seems to be that an all new design would have been better.
