after finally getting my new faction names to work, i've noticed that ALL the rebel units that descr_strat is supposed to place on the map are non existent.

every rebel settlement is empty, and there are no rebels outside of them.

also, after i was sure i fixed it, the old settlements that belonged to the britons in britannia (who i've changed to an eastern faction), are now using an eastern architecture, even though i changed the faction creator to gauls in both descr_strat and the descr_regions file

e.g.

Tribus_Brigantes
Isurium
gauls
Brigantes
232 41 198
furs, slaves, lead
5
5
and

settlement
{
level town
region Tribus_Brigantes

year_founded 0
population 984
plan_set default_set
faction_creator gauls
building
{
type core_building governors_house
}
building
{
type defenses wooden_pallisade
}
}

i have a feeling it's to do with all of the old briton names i deleted. i dont know why though, because the old rebel britons have now been changed to gauls, and i've made sure their names are under the gauls name list (e.g. "Ceanatis", which is a gaul name as well as a briton name before i deleted the briton names in exchange for eastern ones)

the first unit placement in descr_strat is

;Connachta
character sub_faction gauls, Brigomaglos, general, age 20, , x 37, y 202
army
unit barb infantry slave exp 3 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
unit barb infantry slave exp 3 armour 0 weapon_lvl 0
unit barb infantry slave

so i guess that if that one doesnt work, then the process for ALL of the rebels will be stopped.

but i dont know why it's wrong- brigomaglos IS a gaul name:

;; Gaul
faction: gauls

characters
Aneirin
Adcobrovatus
Amminos
Barrivendos
Budic
Belenus
Berdic
Brennus
Brigomaglos
Brycham
Cador
Custennyn
Cynan
Conan...............

Seasoned Alcoholic had a similar problem with dissappearing rebels in this thread which he thought was to do with adding religion to RTW
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=64916
don't know if that ever got resolved.

If you read end of thread you'll see I also managed to recreate problem by having an error above rebels section in descr_strat between settlements - there's some types of additional characters / mis-formatting you can have in between settlements that stop descr_strat being read below that point and don't give show_err message.

Start the game again and look at the last settlements in descr_strat on the strat map and see if they are showing as villages without buildings, when they should be towns etc. if so the error is above that point in descr_strat.

Names errors I've encountered normally give a hard CTD or show_err message, but maybe you've found a new one, LOL.

Hehe, you'd beat me to a response with the same link as an illustration ~D Mind you, I had to wait about 3 minutes for the search to be conducted, and then about the same length of time for the topic to be opened.

Anyway, I never managed to solve the rebel stacks problem, although I did suggest that it may be related to the naming convention. It would've been good if CA could have made some notes at the top of the text file, in order to help modders to distinguish which names belong to a particular faction or culture. Trial-and-error is never the most entertaining feature to master, especially if you've little experience in unfamilar areas.

I'd always believed that some faction names overlapped, so that they could be used by more than one faction of the same culture type. Also, there is that issue of only one unique name per character (be this family member or general) in descr_strat on startup, otherwise you'll get hard CTDs.

However, once the campaign is underway, I've since seen more than one character using the same name, and they were from the same faction. So obviously the game has no issues once the campaign is underway, as long as entries are unique before you get the ball rolling.

I haven't looked into this problem for a while now, basically because I've stepped over this issue and have since moved onto to other areas. It'd be good if a solution to this issue was generated, especially in ironing-out some 'unknowns' regarding the naming convention.

turns out it was an elementary mistake, caused by some sloppy cutting & pasting.

didnt have the word "settlement" at the start of the second rebel city

Glad to hear you've sorted the problem. I'd searched high and dry for a solution when I was looking into this problem. This included mis-coded entries, as Makanyane suggested, but all the entries appeared to be correct. The problem must've been deeper than initially thought...

it's a shame that not every error comes up in show_err. thanks for the help though.

i'm currently getting a CTD during the loading of a battle..it's just one thing after another!

Ah, the joys of modding, where everything goes to plan, until...CTD ~D

i know..i'm going to ignore these battle loading CTD's now, because they seem to occur at random. i guess i cant do anything about it. you have to know when to stop when making a mod
