View Full Version : Diplomacy
I was watching the history channel and a special on Rome was on and it got me thinking.
I've found that diplomacy in RTW struggles a bit. The player gets random demands which seem to make no sense from the computer... the notorious "accept or we will attack" to your "please dont attack" and then you never hear anything from them again. But also in wars against the AI, certain options make no sense.
I would love for once to have a nation which I have pounded or have the potential to pound into submission to agree to become my protectorate, or to give me a province which is my heart's desire... but to no avail. Every time they'd rather die free men then be my slaves or some remote province is too dear for them to part and they'd rather have their civilization wiped out rather than lose it.
If these facts are wrong I apologize and by all means correct me but: after the first punic war, one of the prices for peace for the Carthaginians was the forfeiture of their Sicilian holdings, and I think corsica and sardinia but Im not 100% sure on that one. Considering how badly they were getting whooped the loss of a few provinces is worth that of keeping your empire alive. Then you have the Numidians being a protectorate under Carthage and later Rome... that one Im not too sure on either but even so.
It makes sense! Why cant the AI see that? All of this whining leads up to my question of: Have any more options been added to diplomacy and has their been any progress in giving the AI diplomatic common sense?

Like I mentioned before with the phalanx, diplomacy and AI is hardcoded. :ballchain:
Sorry mate

Things seem to be a little better in 1.5 though. Certainly adjusting the core attitudes seems to help a bit.
hah, hopefully one of my questions will be answered by something besides hardcoding...

Well if it's hardcoded, then your questions have already been answered. If we can't mod diplomacy, then we can't add diplomatic options. If the AI is hardcoded, we can't make them more likely to accept certain options.
Maybe that answers your question?

We can only hope that someone has the money to buy the RTW engine and make Europa Barbarorum a stand-alone game, based on the RTW engine, but heavily modified. It's our only hope.
And it's one of my dreams too. :balloon2:
I think you would only have to buy a license, not the entire engine itself, but I can't say for sure.

You'd have to be very rich to do that, wouldn't you?

That's why I said it's a dream.
No, if you have a license(a copy of RTW), you are not allowed to crack the Source Code.
Even tough the Valce source code is up for download on Steam....
I didnt want to make another thread for this question so I hope some one sees it down here
can you assassinate your own family members?

Nope. Sorry. No can do.
I personally have not had much luck with diplomacy in 1.5; however, an interesting event did happen. Somehow the rebels managed to get their hands on a diplomat, Sextus was his name, and they approached me with an offer of ceasefire. Now, I don't have to go chasing down brigands causing devastation on my lands.

The Romans are acting silly still in 1.5. As Epeiros, I've driven them to just one city at Segesta, and they still won't even make peace. Moroni...

can you assassinate your own family members?
You can 'accidentally' send a bireme up against a pirate fleet, or 'accidentally' send him rushing straight into a phalanx.
:juggle2:
come now tiberius, I'd rather have my family die from some poison mushrooms or just being stabbed to dealth by a disgruntled soldier

Am i the only one to have had Protectorates?
I usually pay up before i enemy them, and when i demand they become a protectorate and they accept it.
It also helps if you're fighting a dying faction, like the Seleucid Empire, they'll get so desperate they'll accept anything, but it did work on Parthia twice :D.
Also i have got the Carthaginains to become my allies, even as the scippi i had taken Thapsus, Palma, Lilybaeum and Caralis. It was really good, usually they'lll send a diplomat up and demand all there terittories back and money from me!
I really wish the dilplomacy was moddable, you could make it so the computer aims for Protectorate not swallowing up in one go, im fed up of the Seleucid Empire dying so damn early :(.
P.S. Incase you're think I'm playing on Easy Difficulty i only ever play on vh/vh.

A "license" does not necessarily mean just a copy of RTW. Software generally has different types of licenses; single-user licenses (purchased box from a store), site licenses (purchasing, say, Microsoft Windows XP for multiple computers in an office to use) and so on. As such, a license to modify the game's engine would probably be somwhat expensive, since that's what many game companies do to base whole games on.
That said, I strongly doubt CA would care all that much that you're editing their hardcode, as long as your mod still requires the user to own RTW. However, it would be a heck of a bummer to have taken the time to decompile all the source code, modify it to taste and then recompile it for download, only to be slapped with a Cease and Desist notice from CA. Hence why most RTW modders don't bother.

Anything is possible for a big sum of money. And this includes CA. They would sell the RTW engine for a good sum of money. Look at the Unreal engine, which runs Unreal 2 and Unreal Tournament games... It has been sold to about 4 big companies(THQ for example bought the engine).
