View Full Version : Are you a computer games addict?
Something I just heard on BBC Radio 2 at work. One guy was playing 6 hours every night and getting up early to go to work every morning. He was married and apparently having no difficulties. Others were on the go intul the "early hours". The presenters barely concealed sarcasm was pretty much the normal British media attitude when it comes to computer gaming: It's for the unsociable geek among us, that spend our entire lives locked away.
Edit: oops, read the "8+" poll options as "6+"! be good if a mod would fix that bit thanks.
I love to play computer games, always have, but addict no. Me getting obsessed with a game does happen sometimes, especially rpg and turn-based strategy games are my doom.
Same here. I tend to get involved on a given evening and can be there for four or five hours, then I might not play again for up to a week. My wife get's annoyed with me at times but she's ok with it. I think if I was sat in front of an FPS for hours on end, mindlessly blasting (:idea2:), I wouldn't get off so lightly. :laugh4:

Some days I won't play at all, and others I will have a three-five hour session. I usually only play one game at a time, and right now my obsession is with Sid Meier's Pirates.:viking: :captain:
It's probably just a quirk of my place in life right now, but I like to game for about an hour a day, and this has become really hard to schedule. It's freaking ridiculous, but squeezing in an hour of EVE or Rome TW is not exactly easy. Too many babies, dogs, cats, wives and jobs, I suppose.
I voted "3 - 5 hours per day - this fits my shedule well".
Well, my gaming is dependant on a lot of things.
I do not have very much to do usually, so there is a lot of time for gaming, but my interest in games plays a very big role, when I´m not interested in a certain game, I won´t play it(it can still be a great game once my interest changes again). If I get a great new game that I like to play a lot, 8+ hours are no problem, 12 or more even, if I really have no other task. But lately the days where I play only 1-2 hours a day or not at all have become more, so one can never really tell.

:help: My name's Macsen, and I am an MTW addict - I worked this out when I realised I hadn't mown the lawn all year. So I did the front, ignored the six weeks worth of washing up, and launched a new campaign. But I do work six days a week, quite long hours, and I've never pulled a sickie to finish a battle... yet.
I usually can only set aside two nights a week to play, and usually play 4-6 hours during these nights. The biggest problem is that these nights are during the week, otherwise I'd play all night long. I don't like short sessions for strategy games, it breaks up my planning. I suppose I could play some FPS/RTS types for an hour more often, but I don't really have one that I'm interested in at the moment.
If I ditch the woman so I can play every night, then I would say I have a problem. :idea2:

I've been playing computer games for longer than I could walk tbh. Not playing perhaps, but my mum used to sit me on her lap while I was still only a couple of months as she played on the NES. I wouldn't say I'm addicted.. I can go for long periods without even thinking about a computer, but if you give me one and a half decent game, I'll find myself glued to the monitor in no time at all.

To whoever that thought up the frontroom rules, may all your sons be camals. Such a great oppertunity for cheap toilet humor :wall:
I usually play WoW 5 or 6 hours a night and most of the weekend, but that's more because I have little else to do at the moment due to it being summer. I will still go out with friends when the opportunity arises and my job has been unaffected as I still get 6-7 hours of sleep a night minimum which I find is plenty. I still go waterpolo training every Thursday and do press-ups/sit-ups each evening so I stay in shape too.
I wouldn't want to quit playing WoW though as I do enjoy it and there is a real friendship in my guild (we have an age limit of 18 to make sure we are all mature people and we can weed out all the "leet kiddies" pretty fast and we have a good mixture of men and women).

Not at all currently. When the new version of Mount & Blade comes out I'll probably put in 8 hours a day for a few days straight.

1-2 hours/day for me, but that's averaged over a week or so. I used to have a problem with this about 10 years ago, when I would spend the whole day in front of the computer playing online - I was in college; screw classes and what not
It lasted for two years :sweatdrop:
But now, lately, with an irregular schedule, it's hard to find time for gaming, most of the time :(

Lately the only time that I game is socially w/ friends on the console systems. Classics like Smash Brothers when I'm too smashed to be anywhere near coherrent. I've forgotten how to play the game while I'm not drunk.:laugh4:

1-2 hours a day, when I have a LOT of free time. I used to play a lot more, but... well, I changed. Leave it at that.

So long as you're not hiding in your overgrown lawn preparing for a surprise flank attack against your neighbour you're ok. :laugh4: :2thumbsup:

Nowadays, I barely play as I devote most of my time to writing (and need to - love deadlines!)
Now and again I might have a three or four hour session, but this will tend to be a game that doesn't need me to remember much about what I did three weeks ago.
There was a time when I was so heavily into a MMORPG that I would play three hours or more a night, but that's a fancy that has now passed.
So sadly, none of the poll choices are available to me.

Right now I play games maybe a little over three hours a day, but when I start my job next Monday (summer work at the college full-time like last summer) I will have less time, and during the school year it's also more like 1-2 hours a night if I'm lucky.

On average over the years, around 1-2 hours a day, since I don't have access to a computer that can both run a decent game and install it. The thinclients in my boarding house don't have anything for you to even insert a disc in, let alone play a computer game.

Upto 5 hours per week.
After I left the Military and bought my first Dell computer (a full spec. Dimension XPS 400) I got into playing computer games.
When I married I cut down on the gaming and didn’t really play any games until I accidentally discovered MTW.
My wife got angry because she’d thought she cured me. We agreed to compromise and I play occasionally.
Does not having finished my first campaign in RTW yet give you an idea of how much I play?
I can’t really say what the week average is as it can be months between each gaming session.
I did try Star wars galaxies one month and there is a small house somewhere in the Tatooine desert with no current occupant.
I have a lance corporal player in Battlefield 2…
Sometimes I dream of a limbo place… where you can enter and time stands still and when you exit it would be as if you just turned in the doorway. I wish my home office was such a place… Please God, hear my prayer!!!
Gag! I hardly play any games in the summer.

Some days not at all, sometimes 2-3 hours if I get the chance. But certainly not in this glorious weather.

The poll really doesn't work for me. When I do play, I will play nonstop for sometimes up to 18 hrs in a day. Everyday? No. I have work and school. But when I do get a chance to play, I play for a disproportionate amount of time than my schedule really allows.
It also requires that I retain the novelty of the game. When the novelty wears off (which make take months as was the case with vanilla RTW and MTW), I stop completely for weeks or months on end.
I am aching to buy a new gaming comp since my last one fried, but I just know that I will end up spending unreasonable amounts of time on EB. Better that I wait maybe.

Sort of. I usually play 1-2 hours of Day of Defeat, then 1 hour of EB.
The rest, I stay 3+ on the internet(this includes modding and reading history texts). :book:

Bleh. One hour a day every once in awhile.
8 hours easy each day during the last 7 months...
it will change by august though, as I will have a new "job" by then.
I'm going to remember those days of eating, drinking, sleeping in front of the monitor...:wall:
If I don't get at least a half hour on the flightsim each day I get... grumpy. When new flightsims come out I fly for three or four hours late at night for at least a week or two.
Yesterday we got rained out and I played M:TW for about five hours. Haven't done that in a while. No work today either so I'm good for an hour or two before RL house duties kick in.
When M:TW2 and the new Battle of Britain flightsim come out, I'll be back to my 9 PM to 1 AM routine for at least a month. Also, they're releasing a Lancaster for FS2004 on Aug 18. I'll be up very late that night and very early the next morning. :2thumbsup:

Since I lost my RTW disk I've played games less and less, perhaps 1-2 hours a day of Conquering Germany as Czechoslovakia in Hearts of Iron 2.
