What happened to soly's "graphic images from israel/lebanon" thread? [Archive]

earlier today, solypsist created a thread in the backroom in which he said he was in either israel or lebanon, or at the border, and he posted some graphic pictures of death and destruction.

that thread has disappeared, i would like to know why. the reason i'm asking is because in that thread, Eclectic noted that he had seen one of those pictures in a magazine, and was wondering what the connection was between solypsist and the magazine's photographer. some of the pictures which were posted can be found at various places around the internet, as well.

Though, looking at that one blog, it says that they were AP pictures...

Well, I'm not leaping to conclusions yet. Perhaps he sold the rights to AP? Perhaps the blogger doesn't know what he's talking about?

When I get home, I'll take a look in the Newsweek magazine and see if it says AP or if there is a credited photographer. I am fairly certain it was a credited photographer but I could always be wrong.

I am curious: Why remove the thread entirely though? Why not just remove the pictures and explain the reason? Why go to the extra trouble?

One more thing, AP does purhase pictures from freelance photographers all the time. There is a good explaination for this I'm sure and we should wait to hear from Soly before we draw conclusions.:2thumbsup:

Did anyone notice the street/buildings picture in the second batch , there was a nice curvature feature , just like he uses in his NY street scenes .

Not a very usual feature amongst regular war photographers submitting pictures to a NY based company .

The photograph in Newsweek was taken by Nasser Nasser of the AP. That means he is the originator and he took it as a part of the AP. In other words, contract photography.

It is on pg 25 of the July 24th edition. :bow:

Actually, going through the original thread, your "friendly" thread in the Backroom and this thread here it seems, that of the patrons who posted in either of those threads, you are the only one stating that he made the claims that the pictures were his.

Also, I am not aware of "many intelligent, rational posters" having been "turned away".
The only patron who is frequently complaing about the moderator solypsist, is a patron who frequently receives warnings for forum rule violations from various moderators and who regularly tries to propagate "views" that leave the Backroom-"liberals" appalled and the Backroom-"conservatives" shaking their heads in pure disbelief...

I was debating whether to actually just PM Solypsist, not because I thought he was a phoney, but because I figured other people read Newsweek and if he wanted to protect his privacy, he should remove that specific photo. I even speculated that it was possible that the photos were fake, but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Either way, if I were to have just PMed him, his "secret" (that he is either a fraud or Nasser Nasser) would have been protected. After all, I really don't give a damn whether he's a photographer or a 300 lb middle aged loser living in the basement o fhius parents house. This is a cult video game forum and every one of us has at least 10% complete douche geek nerd in our blood. In other words, what would it matter either way?

Against my better judgement, I placed my observation in the public thread. I figured he had a perfectly good explanation and would probably provide one. It was, in fact, my faith that he is not a fraud that compelled me not to PM him. I stated specifically: Well, these means one of two things.

I don't make any claim as to wtf is going on here, and I think most folks here don't think I am either. To be honest, I did get the impression that Soly took these photos or said that he took these photos. Whether I misread something or missed a line is on me.

I think the only thing that is stirring up the shark(s) is that the thread was deleted. But you know what? He could have deleted them for any number of reasons. But you know what is most likeyl? He probably said "Oh crap, that's right. I don't want to get sued because I don't own these anymore. Oh crap, I don't have time to deal with this nonsense right now, because I'm in boomskiville with sketchy net access. I'll deal with this later." *thread delete*

you are getting confused by a following line about a picture
now multiply this by about a hundred, and then think about what's laying around in the street

The picture shows a soldier stepping over a corpse in a passageway , it is not the corpse of a baby .

Perhaps you should , maybe you could start by re-examining what you have already "dug up"

Possibly Dave , but to be honest I am surprised the pictures stayed up as long as they did due to some of their content , many news agencies have withdrawn those and similar others from their sites .
I suppose the mods could have just deleted the pictures(the more graphic ones anyway as it is a PGsite ) and left just the words , but what is a topic about pictures without pictures ?

As he was the thread starter, deleting the first post would automatically delete the entire thread. A mod can edit the thread to ressurect the remaining posts, but this needs to be done manually, and that takes time and specific know-how. It's possible he had neither of these. Assuming, of course, that it was Soly who deleted the thread: going on the description of others, it would seem to content might have been a bit too much for the Org.

Nothing more can be established until Soly returns. Until then, I suggest that this thread be closed, as arguing over it won't lead to anything.Is this even possible right now, at least until KukriKhan returns?

Back to the topic on hand. I believe that if the backroom has that video thread, which BTW has sites that contains porn (badjojo being one that a mod posted) then the pictures of the caualties of war should be allowed imo. Considering we are playing a game in which thousands upon thousands are slaughter and the intent of Soly to post the pics were "to maybe change the minds of the more gungho" (not an exact quote, but I can't get the exact quote for obvious reasons) I believe the content was justified. So much of the moderation in the backroom is subjected to personal biases its impossible to keep everyone happy. I say there will be a time when one of two extremed will happen. Either the backroom will become a no holds barred forum, or it will be closed down. I guess we'll see.

NZ mindset is a bit different to most.

More British then the Aussies are. A bit Scandinavain in the socialist extent. Social issues of course exist and there is as always a segment that would rather be suckling at the teat of the state rather then out and about improving and providing for themselves. In general though it is probably less a socialist country then Aus and is a very much a streak of independent do it yourself ability.

A lot of outdoors activities, sailing, hiking and sports... and being big fans of most sports specially the All Blacks.
