Greetings all,

I'm thinking of buying the Eras collection because its fairly cheap on Amazon, looks swanky and I've never tried Rome being an MTW man. I would appreciate your learned guidance as to the following:

Does the game have the latest patches or will these have to be downloaded?
Are there any known issues such as the problem with the Gold Edition of Rome that was recently released?

Ta muchly.

The games already come patched and the mistake of the Gold version has been corrected. However, we aren't sure whether S:TW Gold is playable online.

:inquisitive: Which issue is there with the Gold version? I´ve just got it (you can hardly get BI of itself around here anymore and if you do it´s about the same price as I´ve got the gold pack - 20€) and I´d be most upset to find it´s worse than having bought BI seperately.

According to the .com site:

"The Gold Edition U.S CD box set ships as version 1.3/14. Those wishing to update will only need to install patch 1.6.
The DVD version of the Gold Edition ships with 1.6, and there is no need to update."

Thanks for the warning. I thought he was refering to the M:TW Gold issue.

I have already got the "Era's" box set.

it is very cool having each game on just one disk including the expansion.
very quick loading times.

i am going to trade in all my old versions for MTW 2 when it comes out.

Please excuse the double post, but it seems I spoke too soon - I´m unable to install only BI from the Gold Edition DVD -the installer insists I have a version of Rome installed (which I do - of course, it´s BI I want to install) and are asked to uninstall it first.

So far so bad, that wouldn´t be much of a problem, if only the "uninstall" function would work - which it does not. I suppose there´s a variety of this InstallShield display to show up and a status bar telling me the progress of the removal, the problem is, the uninstall won´t work. The uninstaller flashes up very briefly, then closes itself and nothing happens ~ Using the Sytem Control -> Software to remove RTW didn´t work, either.

In old DOS times I couldn´t care less, back then uninstalling was "del *.*" and that was it, but Windows is more complicated, and I suppose one of the purposes of an uninstaller is to remove the registry entries each and every program has.

Any help would be greatly appretiated.

In it's image, "Medieval 2: Total War" CD is shown.. Any idea?

Delete the game folder and then run regedit, search on the word Rome and delete all the entries you find related to Rome Total War. If you have savegame files or the preferences file you want to hang onto, copy them to somewhere before deleting the game folder. If you are afraid you might make a mistake when editing the registry, create a restore point first with system restore.

I don´t much like editing the registry all on my own, but I suppose I´ve got no choice.

Hopefully after reinstalling my old 1.2 versions are still able to run, it would be a shame not being able to play the METW or LotR mod anymore.

You'll have to get versions of those mods for RTW v1.5 if you remove RTW v1.2. If they weren't updated for v1.5, what should work is to rename the RTW v1.2 folder you have now. Don't delete anything. Just edit the registry and remove the references to RTW, and then install RTW from the Era's Collection. Make a new shortcut to the RTW v1.2 version. I had RTW v1.2 and RTW v1.3 coexisting. I then updated the RTW v1.3 to v1.5 and later added BI v1.6 to the RTW v1.5 and still had RTW v1.2 on my system which I could run independently.

I´ve done precisely that and it worked :2thumbsup:

I mean, I already knew 1.2 installs work after installing patch 1.5, but those were copies of my initial installation, so what I feared was that if the registry entry was changed (due to the removal and installation of a new copy - the Gold version I have is obviously from a physical different disk than my initial install) the old "leftovers" wouldn´t work anymore. But, thankfully, that isn´t the case and all works as it should.

Well, I knew RTW v1.2 ran without any registry entries because when I changed from Win98 to WinXP, I did a full install of WinXP on a new hard disk and didn't install RTW on that disk. I just copied the RTW v1.2 folder from my Win98 disk. So, I had no registry entries at all for RTW in my WinXP installation and RTW ran ok.

Can anyone tell me if the version of Shogun in this box set is updated to work under WinXP?

[No worries, found it in another thread.]

Got my Eras this weekend. Funny thing is I bought it to get the Alexander and BI expansions since I already have everything else. I spent the weekend Taking the Mori on a whoopass session against everybody in Japan!!! Shogun is still the best, but I'm sure I'll eventually get to Alexander and maybe do some barbarian raiding.
I'm glad MTW2 is bringing back the movies. I was laughing out loud wathing my assasins getting wasted in numerous hillarious fashion.
I'm hoping that CA makes a STW2. That would rule.
I would suggest everyone get Eras, its great!!!:2thumbsup:

Jumped onto the Eras bandwagon this weekend... (wanted to get Rome anyway, and I didn't have the various expansions)

Just hafta say, while I'm enjoying Rome, the soundtrack CD is great. Nothing like sitting at a stoplight with the Gothic medieval chants rumbling over the subwoofer...

:2thumbsup:

I liked the documentary as well. I thought they could have gone a little deeper into the developement of the games but it gave some real interesting history. I did love seeing the preview that they made when Shogun was in production. Man, those are fond memories. I can remember how excited i was when I saw that preview!!! :2thumbsup:

It really depends on what type of computer you have! It takes about 5 seconds for me.

i only had standard MTW... so to me it was worth the $60 + 7 for shipping & handling!

i think it only comes in dvd-rom.... otherwise it would have to be on like 12 or more discs, instead of the 6 that it is on. 1 disc for STW & MI, 1 disc for MTW & VI, 1 disc for RTW & BI, 1 disc for RTW Alexander expansion... another disc for the games music soundtrack, and another for dvd behind the scenes extras.

if you dont have the other games it is definitely worth it! the music soundtrack is very cool... and i enjoy MTW:VI from only having the standard MTW before.... and i am looking forward to playing RTW. I doubt i will ever play STW.... by the time i would even get to that game, MTW2 will be out, and i am sure plenty of time will be spent on that! :)

I also only had standard MTW (got it in a bargain bin pack with Stronghold), until I picked this up, but the internet is your friend (and I've been able to play VI and the various mods). In the year that I've had MTW, I was never able to find VI in stores, and I generally don't like buying online.

Anyway, I just installed RTW, and I noticed that I have a slight problem.

I got two Disc 3's. I'm missing Disc 4 with the Alexander expansion.

I wondered why the RTW/BI installer popped up again after loading what I thought was Disc 4.

Who/Where do you contact to get a new Disc 4? Going back to the place of purchase is not currently an option for the foreseeable future. It's a half hour drive, but I don't have transportation, so I don't know when I'll be back there. Makes me kind of glad I didn't purchase online ;)

So, does anyone have my disc 4, and is missing disc 3 :laugh4:

whoops! what a booboo on their part. I am not sure who to contact... there must be a customer service # somewhere in the rule book or package that you can call.

Yeah, i was playing standard MTW on and off for the last 3 years... If i wuld have known what nice changes VI made to MTW I would have got it then... but all i thought it did was add an earlier Viking campaign to MTW. But with Eras, the VI expansion onto MTW is very nice... all sorts of little changes that make the game that much better...

I have not yet played the Viking campaign... but my first game is playing the challenging Hungarians... which were strangely never a playable option before. So that is great... along with the very nice addition of the pre-battle screen. I have also noticed the AI seems to be a little smarter/more logical in its actions.... especially concerning the Mongol Horde which seems to be far nastier than in any other game i have ever played in standard MTW. Those buggers swepth right thru the Russians and stomped quite a bit on the Polish and are sitting right on my doorstep in Poland, Bohemia, and Moldavia!
