I would suggest Home of the Underdogs, but froggy frowns upon giving links to abandonware due to the grey area of legalities. But I'm sure you can google it. Or wiki it.

1848 - Great little turn based strategic wargame made by Hussar Games, a small Hungarian developer that created the game thanks to funding by Hungary's education system which distributed it as a teaching tool. 1848 deals with the Hungarian revolt of 1848/49 which saw that nation break off from the Austrian empire in a desperate bid for independence. You can fight as either side but as expected, the real challenge is in winning as the Hungarians. 1848 is published by Battlefront.com and is the prequel to the recently released 'For Liberty!' which deals with the American and Hungarian Revolutionary wars (the latter taking place in 1711). 'For Liberty' sports a much improved and polished engine along better graphics and tactical battles. I thought I had reached critical mass with respect to hex based, turn based wargames but these titles seem to infuse a freshness and playability sorely missing from its peer group. The ability to draft and create your own armies and the decent AI were huge selling points for me.

Definitely try Babylon 5: I've Found Her for a great spaceflight combat game. And Spino's correct, 1848 is ace.

If you don't mind old school, then Steel Panthers: World at War and Steel Panthers: WW2 are two outstanding reworkings of the old SSI classic. They are essentially massive mods of the original, but are full games, 100% legit freeware, not abandonware. They remind me an awful lot of Squad Leader - each unit is a squad or a vehicle, but if anything it is even more realistic. However, I find times have moved on and I am not content with that old style hex/turn based computer wargame anymore. For me, Shogun changed everything and its almost impossible to go back.

I had hours of fun with the demo of the original Steel Panthers many many years ago. Good stuff.

Can't list underdogs for reasons already mentioned, but get Rrootage and Nois2a there.
