The Nippon Ichi strategy RPGs for the PS2. Anyone play them?

If so, what would you recommend for the Disgaea liking but very newbie frog? Which games, and what playing order? I'm actually considering getting the full set except Makai, which I hear isn't that good. :wry grin: Promotion at work = pay rise = frog thinking about buying some semi-rare games to break up the piles of new books. Yes, I'm fully aware of how massive these games are. It's called buying hope - I buy them and hope one day I'll be able to finish them. Or indeed actually play them for more than the intro levels. Better to buy while they are still relatively easy to find and cheap, IMO. I can get La Pucelle and Phantom Brave for £19 each, and Makai Kingdom for £14.99.

Also, any tips for any of the games would be welcome. Nothing worse than spending a few months chipping away at an RPG only to realise an elementary newbie mistake has made the game near impossible. Topics here make for good storage; as long as there's an org I can come back and find them easily, even years into the future.

I tend to avoid anything with the word "Tactics" since they are more prolific than the "Tycoon" games, and are usually just as bad. Although I have heard good things about La Pucelle, I'm still just going to save my money on something that I know I'll enjoy, like Me & My Katamari.

Here are some GameSpot reviews for you so you can make up your mind:

La Pucelle, 7.5 (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/lapucelle/review.html?q=La%20Pucelle)
Disgaea, 8.1 (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/disgaeahourofdarkness/review.html?q=Disgaea)
Phantom Brave, 7.5 (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/phantombrave/review.html?q=Phantom%20Brave)
Makai Kingdom, 7.5 (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/makaikingdomchroniclesofthesacredtome/review.html?q=Makai%20Kingdom)

Of these I only played Disgaea (still have to thank the orger that recommended this gem to me), and don't worry about newbie errors, it is always possible to change classes. This is really fun game, great gameplay and truely hilarious writing.

oh, and the music rocks.

I got all of them, my advice are playing Disgaea first, it has the simplest gameplay (compared to the later games), also Disgaea 2 is coming out "soon", so better learn the backstory!

If you can play Total War at the hardest level, I don't see how these games could be hard for you...

Since I already own Disgaea I guess that's that. Suppose I shall pick the set up if I can't think of anything else; I'm determined to do something with this first expanded paycheck, and I'll already have catered to my main vice with a big box stuffed to bursting with books.

Katamari, Kek? Come to think of it 'We Love Katamari' is out here now. The first game never went PAL :grumbles:

Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari are instant addictions. It's so loony, and yet so fun

EDIT: Now I'm cursing myself for getting Metal Gear Acid 2 instead of Me & My Katamari
