"I can say for my life and my family that there's no one that's been pressured into doing anything they didn't want to do," the Las Vegas Review-Journal quoted Fischer as saying. "Every single person is very happy. There's no pain."
A happy marriage? How dare he! :furious3:

Relying on birth certificates and testimony of former church members, a jury convicted Fischer last month of sexual contact with a minor and conspiracy for having sex with a 16-year-old.
Ahem....that's the age of consent in the UK. :sweatdrop:
It reminds me of a joke.
A guy is in bed making love to a beautiful teenage girl, he stops for a moment and asks her her age....
'why I'm 13' she replies......
The guy is shocked and leaps out of bed...
'wassamatter' says the lolita...'you're not superstitious are you?' :laugh4:
Oh it could be worse Strike, so much worse. I am surprised if child rapists go to jail at all, most of the time they get to pick up some paper for a few hours and are free to rape some more. These light sentences are of course given by the same judges that decided that a pro-childrape political party is the greatest thing ever and an example to us all.

16 is also the age of consent in many US states, including Nevada and Alabama (where I live).
EDIT: ...and for US military personnel.
Age of consent in Canada is 14.
Hence due to varying age laws this thread seems to have a misleading title.

So if a man marries a 16-year old in Nevada and then moves to a state where the age of consent is 18 or higher, is it illegal for him to have sex with his wife, or should the second state recognise the marriage that is legal in Nevada?
EDIT: ...and for US military personnel.
Who needs to be in the military, the 16-year-old, the older person or both?
Age of consent in Canada is 14.
Really? Legal to have sex with 14-year-olds in Canada? Not good.
:gah2:
What rubbish. The issue here is the polygamy and the age gap, not the age. Many countries have an age of consent of 16, which is a reasonable one. Anything below is just wrong.

States recognize authorized marriages. So while the age of consent is 18, if you got married in a state with the AoC at 16 to someone at 16, then yes, it would be legal.
Who needs to be in the military, the 16-year-old, the older person or both?
In the US, you cannot be in the military until you are 17 (and even then, you have to have reached your 18th birthday by the time you graduate basic training), so it's safe to assume the AoC for military personnel applies to older people in the military with 16/17 year olds that are not. This only applies in US bases, however. A sailor going off on shore leave in Mexico (where the AoC is TWELVE) would most certainly face a court martial if he had fun with a 12 year old.

Did you have no friends in relationships having sex at 14? Plenty of people I know did and the girls turned out to be perfectly normal. Age is not the issue, maturity is. We set the age at 16 arbiturally but that doesn't make it right for everyuone.

Incidentally I knew a few, who had to have abortions and a few others made pregnant at 14 or 15 that are still single mothers claiming benefits many years later. The law is there to protect those that need protecting. The majority of children under 16 cannot be expected to decide whether they want a baby or not, nor how to properly protect themselves against STIs. I'm sure that if you had a 14 year old daughter that was regularly having sex, you wouldn't be saying to your partner: "Don't worry she'll turn out to be perfectly normal. Age is not the issue, maturity is". I know I wouldn't.

It’s great hearing that some people here think girls having sex at 14 is cool. The only thing greater than that is when she gets pregnant, she and her friends think having a baby is like having a pet or a doll. It’s amazing how much you hear young, pregnant girls saying that. Most girls who have sex at that age also wish they had wanted. Having a baby is an 18 year minimum commitment. How can you risk having one when you’re not even 18 yourself?

Letme pose this question. Do you think this relationship is alright?

I think this whole case shows that on several fronts, the age of consent laws within the US (and apparently UK) are woefully inadequate for today's world.
First, age... Caravel, don't ever let NOW, NARAL, or any other women's rights groups in the US hear you saying that a 15-year old can't be trusted to make decisions about her sexuality. You'd wind up tarred and feathered and their poster-boy as male chauvanistic pig. They contend that IF SHE WANTS TO, the age of consent could be as low as 11 or 12, because this is the age they demand that abortion laws of consent, as part of her choice, be set, usually without parental notification. Many states employ this model. If she doesn't want to have sex, or changes her mind about it later, they would say the age of consent is 18. I know, an incredibly wicked double-standard, but such is life. The typical state-law model for consensual sex is that:
A- With two minors, it is always assumed that the male coerced the female. At some later date, should she decide her heart wasn't in it, she can file charges against him, even if they were both minors.
B-If men over the age of 16 have sex with women under the age of 16, it is automatically statuatory rape. All it takes is for the woman, or her parents acting on her behalf, to file charges and the guy is toast and he's off to the big house with a rape conviction (a nice way to become a prison :kiss2:)
C- If women over the age of 16 have sex with men at any age, typically charges will be filed, but unless there are multiple offenses (and not always then) nothing will actually be done (see Mary Kay LeTourneau). Typically an apology and a promise to avoid the male party is all that happens in terms of sentancing.
These laws, while maybe valid 50 years ago, clearly do not accurately reflect the reality out there. Women frequently DO initiate sex. Youths are either responsible enough to make decisions regarding their sexuality, or they're not. Laws cannot be structured in a 'if you change your mind' fashion. The assumption that the male is always the guilty party must stop. And most imporatantly, somebody already raised the fact that this should be about age gap, not raw age of the party in question.
Letme pose this question. Do you think this relationship is alright?
I don't think it's legally wrong. In the UK the girl would be of the age of consent, though in order to marry under the age of 18 it's down to the parents to give permission. Instead of the nanny state meddling, this type of decision should be put back in the hands of the parents. If they are happy and their daughter is happy that she should be married to an older man while still at the age of 16 then let them get on with it.
Also while I did say that polygamy was the main issue, I don't see a problem with polygamy if all parties are happy with this sort of lifestyle. They're not exactly harming anyone, it's just the bigoted moralists that object.
Really? Legal to have sex with 14-year-olds in Canada? Not good.
If your say 15-20 (IIRC) then yes. And legally once the younger party has hit puberty it's not pedophillia anymore. It's statutory rape. So this guy is guilty of 1)Statutory rape (of the equivalent law in Arizona) and 2)Unlawful cohabitation.
There was a case here a few years ago where a baseball player who was being courted for university teams was caught getting head from a pair of 13 yearolds. He was 19, and charged with statutory rape.

The girls who got pregnant would be too immature to make the decision, yes? What if she is mature enough?
I don't think sex below 16 is a good idea really, or 18, if I'm honest. That said there's a "but" coming and its a big one. What if a girl is 14 and mature enough to make the decision?
As I said, I know some girls who were mature enough at the time. They've all turned out fine, because they were smart about it, and none of them were traumatised by being "raped."
The law simply bears to relationship to the reality.

There is one loophole in the age of consent for the US... and that is the two year gap. If your state has an age of consent at 18, and you are 19, and have sex with a 17 year old, it's legal because you both are within 2 years. If you were 20 or older, or the other party was 16 or younger, then there would be problems.
Most police jurisdictions do not recognize this legal oddity (and, in my opinion, for good reason). However, let's say you had a highschool sweetheart that was one or two years younger. The day you turn 18 (or, in some states, 19), the police will hunt you down if you so much as touch him or her, despite being within the age gap. Sort of puts a damper on highschool relationships.
And personally, I have no objections for teens having sex early. I DO, however, have objections when they havent been properly educated on the disasters that could happen if proper procautions are not taken. It's one of the reasons why I'm all for Sex Ed classes in junior high. They are going to have sex anyway, might as well teach them the rights and wrongs when they are young.

I am not sure where you are going with this one, WI. Are you arguing that the age of consent be lowered to 14 because some girls are old enough or what?
Those who favour an age of consent are not saying that having sex before 16 (or wherever the limit is set). They are saying that you need to be a certain age before you can agree to having sex. Setting a limit protects people from sex before they are ready for it. Where you set the limit is open to argument, but the fact that the limit might not be suitable for all is not an argument against the actual age, unless you favour no limit at all.
The girls who got pregnant would be too immature to make the decision, yes? What if she is mature enough?

I didn't know there was a 2-year gap loophole, but you say the police and prosecutors ignore it anway, so it is entirely possible.
The one issue I would like to take.... I have never, ever heard of an 18 year old female being prosecuted for sex with a 16 year old (or 13 year old for that matter) male. The law only gets applied when the male is older or the same age as the female, and ony against the male.

I said 18 year old females.
This week alone, two cases have hit the news: Cops say one Texas teacher, Kathy Denise White (search) had sex with a 17-year-old, and Tennessee teacher Pamela Rogers Turner (search) had sex with a 13-year-old boy.
They join at least three other recent cases: Florida teacher Debra LaFave (search), 24, is expected to plead insanity to charges she had sex with a 14-year-old student, according to her lawyer; California teacher Sarah Bench-Salorio (search), 28, allegedly molested two boys when they were 12 and 14; and 33-year-old California teacher Rebecca Boicelli (search) was arrested last month on statutory rape and related charges after DNA tests confirmed that a former student fathered her 2-year-old baby when he was 16.
All of them follow the trail laid by Mary Kay Letourneau (search), whom the media tracked again last year when she was released from prison after more than seven years. The former Seattle teacher said she’s still in love with her now-21-year-old student (who was 12 when she was 34 and fathered the first of the two children they had together); the pair have since reportedly gotten engaged.
All of these women were well into their 20's and 30's. Most were teachers, charged with relationships with their students. Only one, Mary Kay Letourneau, actually did jail time, and that was after multiple convictions and several court orders violated.
Find me ONE case where an American girl, under age 20, was charged with statuatory rape for sex with her underage boyfriend.
Find me ONE case where an American girl, under age 20, was charged with statuatory rape for sex with her underage boyfriend.
That's a google query that I think I will try from home...
I'm sure somewhere out there some parents have pressed charges against "the neighborhood tramp that corrupted their innocent little boy". Maybe a babysitter or tutor. :laugh4: Let me get back to you on this one, I have faith in human nature on both the gettin'-it-on part and the moral outrage part.
