After finally installing Rome Total Realism I’ve run into a little issue that you fine folks might be able to help me with. My campaign as the Roman Republic was going great until I loaded up a battle and zoomed up close to inspect my troops. It felt like my computer hit a particularly bad patch of traffic in Lag City. My mouse was crawling across the screen.

This never used to happen in the original version. I checked all my settings and nothing has changed. Does RTR use higher resolution textures for their units or something? If so is there a way to change it?

Wow, same thing happened to me yesterday....I decided to relaunch my PC & it worked fine again. I think it has something to do with the vegetation grphics level, as it only happened during battles in woods. But I don`t really know....

I used to have that problem all the time with RTR - and a few other mods...
but since i got a graphics card (for the first time) I've had absolutly no problems
maybe its your graphic card??

Maybe it is my graphics card, though I'm not about to shell out a wad of cash for a new one. Is there a way to reduce the lag without spending money?

Lower the vegetation - i find that caused the greatest lag
could also lower the resolution ( im not sure if that would help ) - unit size (if you want to bite the bullet)
but what worked on my computer ( have no idea why and it could have just been my computer ) was to get rid of the interface
go into your prefrences and where it says MINIMAL_UI change that to true
for some reason it worked on my old computer which had that problem

Lowering vegitation does indeed reduce lag, though only in thickly forested areas. I've aleady tried everything you've suggested at various times. The minimal interface is classic from the first two games and I always use it. I'm not willing to compromise with the resolution and unit sizes, especially because only the Roman troops seem to cause problems. It doesn't make sense. They don't seem to be more ellaborate then other troops in RTR. Does anyone know what it could be?

only Roman units? thats wierd...
is it a specific unit? or all the units?

So this only happens when your playing as Romans in forested areas?

Apart from that, does everything run perfectly smoothly?

I used to play Vanilla RTW on my computer. It was a bit slow and jerky, especially in battles. When I tried EB, it became practically unplayable, 30 minute end-turns etc.

I've ordered a GeForce 6600 Graphics Card, to replace my computer's in-built one; apparently thats supposed to make a big difference...

The problem is the descr_grass.txt file. RTR, SPQR and several other mods use a modified descr_grass.txt file that increases the grass blades 500%. As a result, not only does the CPU have to keep calculating all the moving grass blades, your GPU has to draw all of them too.

Just replace the descr_grass.txt that came with the RTR mod with the original RTW descr_grass.txt file and your FPS will vastly increase.

Look for RTR Platinum Edition in the mod download section. Current version is RTRPE 1.6 and next patch 1.7 will be out probably in a day or 2.

It's basically RTR 6.0 Gold (for RTW 1.2) which has been converted/ported to be playable with RTW 1.5/BI 1.6

Sweet. Thank you. Replacing descr_grass.txt with the original did it. Odd how I don't even use grass and the game slowed down anyway. Well, it's back to normal now.
