I'm trying to start up a roleplaying community, i'm going to try to go different than your average Tolkien-esque fantasy world, that will be only part of the community. Im planning historical based rps-games, Sci-Fi, real world, anything you can think of. If your interested we can talk about it here.
What did you have in mind?

Well im getting a forum up, maybe with enough people we can take a poll over what time period to do, Medieval, early Rome, Napoleanic, WW2, Sengoku Jidai, whatever anyone else suggests. I'm trying to brainstorm how i would do the rules for each game, similar to 12th century glory, but maybe a different time period.
Its not much right now but..........

Well the first thing to do is start making a decision on what time period, here were some i had in mind.
Rise Of Rome- 250ish BC
World War 2-1938 (probably easiest research, hardest rules wise to implement)
Napoleanic-1800s
Sengoku Jidai-1530
Greek City States
Medieval Europe
Early America? Colonies and Native tribes (research may be scarce however)

The Rise of Rome would be the best era to use

At the risk of sounding stupid, what exactly is a "roleplaying community"? Are you a modding group?

A forum basically.

Yeah, but what do you do on the forum? Talk about history etc?
EDIT: Also, what is the 'game' you talk about on the forums?
EDIT2: Having researched this a bit, I have some ideas what roleplaying is. In this case with Swords and Scolars, each player takes over a team. They conduct diplomacy etc on the forums, and discuss rules there.
What I don't understand is how such a game could work. How would the combat work? How would you know what armies and soldiers each player had? How would you resolve combats?
If I'm on the right tracks, I think it sounds like an interesting idea, and I could help with research if you wanted.

The game is basically a rise of rome game.
People write out a faction post, name, family, cities, population, armies etc. It can be loose as it is for fun and freeform, for example you can march on rome the first day, but don't expect your faction to last long:dizzy2:
for an example of how the game works, here is one with a medieval setting that some people here are involved in.

One idea someone had that would be TRULY epic would be a world version, but that would require massive amounts of time, people, moderators, and research.

Ah, I understand now. Looks a little complicated for me... Perhaps I could set up some sort of game for beginners, make it simple to allow people to get the hang of it. :idea2: Do you think that idea could catch on.

Probably, but we are all in the same, boat, beginners, so we can stumble along together!:dizzy2:
If you want to practice roleplaying, i can start off one on my forum, just a practice one, maybe "a day in the city of Rome" or something
GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECE!!!
Would really suit the idea, I think. Maybe from the (historical) start of the Peloponnesian war (431) to the (historical) end of said conflict (404), one month per day and one day's rest per week would be the way I'd do it.
I always found Rome a bit dull - but would probably join anyway, I think it'll end up that you'll have to at least split aforementioned beastly civilisation or it'll spiral out of control very unrealistically (depending on era).

I suggested Senkogu Jidai, but we are a democracy. Wow, i wish i had time to do like four games like this, Medieval, Rome, Greece, Japan, alas only 24 hours in a day-work some days-sleep/eat/drink
I would be content with Medieval, Greece, Napoleonic and whenever Narva was.
Still, why are there not 96 hours in a day ?!?!

I like this idea, so where are we going to talk aout this in more depth ?
This link will arrive at the medieval RPG - Started by Silver_Rusher that's already in progress. If I'm correct, the Sultanate of Rum and Great Seljuk are free, although I don't think we have many major European factions left.
12th Century Glory (http://z14.invisionfree.com/12th_Cen...idx:2thumbsup:)
And then there's one in the above posts to one that looks to be about Rome.
