View Full Version : Rumour regarding M2TW Demo

I stumbled on something while browsing the TWC forums.

13.08.2006 r., 11:57

According to some unofficial sources, the demonstration version of MTW II will be finished by next week. However, this information is unconfirmed and it does not mean that the demo will be released to the public then - at the end it's all up to Sega.

Even when taking into consideration the unofficial nature of this news, it still seems that this info regarding the demo can be true. After all, it is high time for the developers to have the demonstration version of MTW II prepared. Hopefully, it will be released soon.

Stay tuned.

I'd like to see it soon (assuming its a real demo as opposed to the scripted nonsense we had with RTW). It would give me hope that the final version will be less buggy than RTW (since we'll find the unavoidable bugs). Good demos provide lots of feedback for the developers (not all of it useful though).

yea i can't wait for the demo just to see how good the game actually is, and whether it's all it is made out to be

i have faith in CA though

IIRC RTW was released on 1st October, and I think the demo was released only about a month or so before that.

Yup Rome was released in October, but i recall the RTW demo came out something like 20th-25th August

Usually demo comes out a couple of months prior to game.

I seem to remember we usually get loads of modding in prior to game release...

Modding the demo? How so and what exactly?

I really cant wait to get a playable version of this game in my hands!
Surely , CA won't involve the campaign map in the demo, but i'd like to see a couple of factions fighting each other in custom battles,so I hope my expectations will become reality :2thumbsup:

Well, I remember that there was a program called "Rodeo" for the RTW demo. It allowed you to play custom battles in the demo although the demo itself only had a tutorial and 2 historical battles. You could play the Julii, Gaul, Carthage and the Senate with that mod while the demo itself only allowed you to play as the Carthaginians, I thought.

So, when the demo hits, someone might make another program for M2TW and it might allow us to play the demo a lot more. :)

Getting hold of any files you can find and changing them....

Seriously, there were lots of mods for the demo (changing the battles, camera hack etc)

The reason I would want the playable demo, is to see if the game would function properly on my computer.

I hope there is another RODEO program for the MTWII demo, that little bugger really held the whole TW community off until Rome itself came out!

And when people saw that nothing was changed even though we complained, the MP community, as was, disappeared overnight. It would be nice to think that MTW II will be good enough to encourage them to return

And with them my clan.
We played one online city siege, we went out of sink, and that was the end of Clan Shades as a total war clan

hmm, is that legal? i mean the original demo is what CA gives us as a try, if we then dig out more then what we were given isen't that a bit of stealing?

Demo will probably come very close to the actual release of the game. This time I hope the reactions will be more positive than the last.

I'm kind of afraid of the demo...

I didn't see Rome's demo, but I'm guessing it wasn't very good.

I would like to see a demo that encourages me to buy the game, but I don't want to get a demo that encourages me to buy a game that isn't very good. If the game isn't very good, then the demo ought to reflect that. To put it simply, I want an honest demo, not a deceptive one.

No, CA put certain units and files into the demo, so we use what we were given.

The RTW demo was very limited in scope (which the modders bypassed to some degree) and was therefore pretty disappointing to the hordes of impatient fans. It wasn't deceptive though. IIRC many/most threads here were concerning how fast the units were, how fast the battle was over, etc. There were many calls for calm, that it was just a demo, that the real game could not be such a departure from the tactical skill of the previous games. Sadly, RTW was "just like the demo".

Heh, a german online magazine reports here(in german) (http://www.krawall.de/news.php?s=c&news_id=21453), that the demo version is finished and features two playable battles.

But...they mention only a demo for the Games Convention in Leipzig at the end of August...:inquisitive:
Maybe they'll make it downloadable.

Faenaris
08-16-2006, 16:05
Well, maybe that's the demo that totalwar.pl was talking about. In that case, chances of us playing the demo soon will be slim.

But, we can always hope.

I would imagine any demo we see with be a couple of battles. Maybe they'll be scripted, hopefully the AI won't need it.

I would be very surprised if they don't use any scripting at all. If nothing else, I expect a little in-game intro done with a script.

08-18-2006, 00:50
Well it will probably be historical battles like always so yeah a scripted AI but CA can't screw the AI up, it is damn near impossible consider the improvements they did to the AI in the 1.5/1.6 patch for RTW. And pretty much all previews shows a improvement as well.
But in my case I'm not playing the demo to see how the AI is but how it will run on my computer.

Mikhal

does anyone have any idea if we will be able to try the strategic mode out in a way so you can manage some cities and try some agents and not just walk with your general as in the rome demo.

hoetje
08-18-2006, 21:48
I don't think they will include the campaign map in the game.
Just custom battles (with 1 or 2 factions) i think.

Tamur
08-18-2006, 22:19
Mikhal, a demo with the strategy portion of the game as well would be approaching or over 500Mbs to download. Far more than any game site wants to host.

Also, that would be a huge amount more work for the programmers with little payoff --- I'd guess a majority of the audience for the demo (even here at the weird Org) are far more interested in the battle engine. So I wouldn't expect it.

PC gamer is usually pretty slow with thier demos. they realease em like a month after it first shows up on the web and i can't see why sites don't wanna host more then 500mb on www.gamershell.com/pc they've got the dark messiah demo which is like 1.1 gb.

An improvement to the AI in a preview? Considering they haven't played it, and if they have, it was in a scripted environment?

Why do you think demo's are scripted in the first place? There were some improvements in the 1.5/1.6 patch, but nowhere near enough for me to buy MTW2. It's always possible to screw something up.

i am going to download the demo no matter the size. i need to evaluate whether i care to spend money on a rtw clone or not. it is not just the money. i do not want to waste time playing a game that is designed for the fantasy genre and rts players. i expect them to script the game so that it appears more mtw-ish, but that is why i want to download the demo. i will carefully read others evaluations as well.
