Hi and welcome to TWC

We're making a mini-mod about the last years of the Great Island of Númenor. We will most likely use reskinned units from both LOTR:TW and FA:TW (with their permissions, ofcourse).

Here's the map:
https://img301.imageshack.us/img301/9098/starlandtb6.jpg

Right now it features 22 regions, but that number will increase in the future.

There will be two playble factions:

- The Faithful (Those Númenóreans faithful to the Elves and Valar)
- The King's Men (Those Númenóreans corrupted by Sauron)

Númenor: Total War will start in the year 3310 of the Second Age of the Sun. Ar-Pharazôn, King of Númenor, is influenced by his 'prisoner' Sauron, and has started the Great Armament in preparation for an invasion of Valinor. His aim: to take the gift of immortality by force of arms. The Faithful, a group led by Amandil, Lord of Andúnië, learn of these plans and set out to stop the King before it is too late. Darkness descends upon the isle of Númenor, and civil war and strife ensues...

It's your task to either destroy the King's Men so that there can be peace with The Eldar once more, or to destroy The Faithfull so that nothing stands in the way of the King's Men.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. = Question
A. = Answer

Q. Why do you make a mod about Númenor?

A. Well, a week ago, i was chatting with Apoc and he said that he always wanted to see a Númenórean mod for RTW. 3 days ago, I began thinking about what he said. That night, I began writing story-lines, dates, etc... (from 1 am till 3 am). The next day, I began designing some maps about Númenor. But I realised that without some good units, it would be nothing, so I posted a request to use Wlesmana's units on LOTR:TW.net. He agreed and I started modding the map. But since I was unexperienced, I PM'ed Tittils (FATW Map Manager) who is a real pro when it comes to Map-Modding and Apoc also offered help.

Q. When will the Mod begin?

A. It will begin in 3310 of the Second Age when King Ar-Pharazôn ordered the Great Armament to invade Valinor.

Q. Which Factions are going to be included

A. The Faithful and The King's Men.

Q. Why only two factions?

A1. Simple, there are no more. We could include the Eldar but since Tolkien said that The Valar were not quick to forgive, it would be too inaccurate.

A2. We are aware that if the AI only has to focus on 1 faction, it improves the gameplay. A bit like Caius Brittanicus' 'The Crusades' mod principle.

Q. What are the Victory Conditions?

A. The Faithful will need to destroy The King's Men to stop the invasion of Valinor. The King's Men will need to destroy The Faithful so that nothing will stand in their way.

Q. When will the Mod be released?

A. Simple: when it's done. (=> classical answer)

Q. On what did you base the Mod?

Mostly on 'The Atlas of Middle-Earth' by 'Karen Wynn Fonstad' and some other maps I found.

Q. How many regions will there be?

A. There are currently 22 regions but that will most likely change.

Q. Will there be navies?

Yes, the Númenóreans were great mariners.

Q. Will there be Historical Battles

A. Not decided yet, but it's most likely that there will be a few. Our main goal is to recreate Númenor in all its aspects, not to make battles.

Q. Will there be Wizards and magic?

A. Absolutely not because there were no Wizards in Númenor.

FAQ will be updated from time to time.

'Then the Edain set sail upon the deep waters, following the Star; and the Valar laid a peace upon the sea for many days, and sent sunlight and a sailing wind, so that the waters glittered before the eyes of the Edain like rippling glass, and the foam flew like snow before the stems of their ships. And setting their course towards the bright star Rothinzil the Edain came at last over leagues of sea and saw afar the land that was prepared for them, Andor, the Land of Gift, shimmering in a golden haze. Then they went up out of the sea and found a country fair and fruitful, and they were glad. And they called that land Elenna, which is Starwards; but also Anadûnë, which is Westernesse, Númenórë in the High Eldarin tongue.

http://www.home.no/tittils/starland.jpg

This was the beginning of that people that in the Grey-elven speech are called the Dúnedain: the Númenóreans, Kings among Men. But they did not thus escape from the doom of death that Ilúvatar had set upon all Mankind, and they were mortal still, though their years were long, and they knew no sickness, ere the shadow fell upon them. Therefore they grew wise and glorious, and in all things more like to the Firstborn than any other of the kindreds of Men; and they were tall, taller than the tallest of the sons of Middle-earth; and the light of their eyes was like the bright stars.' [The Silmarillion: Akallabêth - The Downfall of Númenor]

Long the Númenóreans prospered on their fair isle; but the fates of Men are ever darkened by their lust for power and affinity for war. The Kings of Men, though they were long-lived, desired what they believed had been denied to them: the immortality of the Eldar. And so it happened that the Firstborn and the most glorious of the Secondborn grew estranged: friendship turned to dislike, dislike turned to enmity, and enmity to hate. In time, the Kings of Númenor took their names in Adûnaic, the tongue of Men, and not in the language of the Eldar, as had been the custom, and they forbade its use throughout the realm.

And it came to pass that Ar-Pharazôn the Golden, the mightiest and proudest of all the kings of Númenor, took the Sceptre; great indeed was his anger when he learnt that Sauron had taken the title King of Men, for it seemed to him that no king was mightier than the Heir of Eärendil, and that that title should belong to none other than the King of Númenor. Therefore he began in that time to smithy great hoard of weapons, and many ships of war he built and stored them with his arms; and when all was made ready he himself set sail with his host into the East. And when Sauron saw the splendour and might of the Kings of the Sea, he knew that none of his servants, even the greatest, could stand against them. The Dark Lord humbled himself and vowed to become the vassal of Ar-Pharazôn; for Sauron knew how to get what he wanted with cunning, if he could not get it with force of arms. The King brought with him Sauron to Númenor, and at first he distrusted him; but soon he listened to his every word, and began to worship the Lord of the Darkness, Morgoth, and a great temple was built in the centre of the city of Armenelos where many foul and dreadful deeds were committed.

Not all Men forsook the friendship with the Elves, or their love for the Valar; these were called the Faithful, and they welcomed the Elves to their shores, and aided them in their struggle against the Dark Lord. The highest of them was Amandil, Lord of Andúnië, and his son Elendil. Their greatest strength was in the west of the isle, and in the haven of Rómenna. They never openly committed rebellion, and they were always loyal to the House of Elros, even when the Faithful were being persecuted and named rebels; many were burned as sacrifices to Morgoth in the temple devoted to him.

So, under the influence of Sauron, Ar-Pharazôn starts the Great Armament in preparation for an invation of Valinor, the Blessed Realm, to wrest the immortality he so desire from the Valar with force of arms. And Amandil, learning of this, find that he can stand by peacefully no longer. Darkness descends upon the isle of Númenor, and civil war and strife ensues...

Erm. A campaign with 2 factions? Won't that kinda degenerate into a simple "who has more resources will win" scenario.

GrimSta
08-26-2006, 22:16
not really.

its a relativly big map, and that will mean the AI will only have to cope handling one faction which in theory means it performs better. It's the driving principle behind Caius Britannicus's The Crusades mod.

Here's a WIP battle our skinner Master Flip just had:

the ai's dumb formation

when the enemy was in range my archers open fire

my spearmen are ready to repel the oncoming archer attack from the corrupted....

but instead the corrupted charged head on into my formation

both flanks were attacked by the corrupted

my right flank is taken down by the enemy

the men on the left flank routed the men and then moved to attack the corrupted who killed their general and collapsed the right flank

but they were not strong enough to take the claymore wielding kings men..

@ -apocalypsis-

Wow! Brilliant.

@ Grimsta

Hmm. I'm still kinda skeptical. The gameplay needs to be deeper than a normal campaign though. The AI needs to be powerful enough to beat you often enough to make it interesting. In my opinion, the AI needs to give you a good whippin at least 1/2 of the time.

GrimSta

its easier for the AI to do that if it only has to conectrate on one faction, and with the size of the map the AI wont even need to concentrate to hard on it.

The other way to improve the games AI along with the smaller camp map is to create specific goals for the strategic AI, such as capturing this or that province or both provinces, by reducing the cost of troops and also the build time a mod team could have a Strat AI that recruits lots of powerful troops, and also have battles in the 2000 man range, which is where the tactical engine shines :P

WImPyTjeH

let's hope that that and the fact that BI's AI isn't completely retarded, help to incrase fun of the mod

I think you should play more with the colors. It's very to tell who's who at the moment. Maybe the bad guys should be cloaked in white? Or change the wings and shield a little bit. There's a lot you can do to a unit with just changing textures.

WImPyTjeH
08-30-2006, 18:30
yes, i'm still very thankfull that we can reskin your units

about the white, we're gonna try to make them so accurate as possible

Faithfull: Blue and White
King's Men: black and Gold

these screens are WIP ofcourse

W

Nice. I'd suggest doing some other changes to the textures and models. Maybe remove the cloak from some of the units. How many units are you aiming for anyway?

WImPyTjeH
08-31-2006, 10:37
not yet decided

basicly, we can't do anything with the FATW units until 'Corsair Invasion' is released because the skinners are not part of the FATW - Team

giving the units to them would be a serious offence.
