View Full Version : Are you satisfied with you government?

So is your government, in whatever country you live, doing a decent job and why?

I was wandering this because latly I hear nothing but complaining but that can't always be the case. THere must be governments who do good jobs. Therefore this poll.

Personally I'm not that satisfied with my government but I don't think they're doing such a bad job either. One of the big plusses is mainly that the budget has been balanced. And tough BHV and Zaventem both aren't resolved I don't think they have done that much wrong.

So?

Tough question. Can it do better ? Yes. Do we need a complete overhaul via revolutionary war or whatever the modern equivalent is ? No.

My dealings with the government are all behind the scenes. They take money out of my paycheck electronically and automatically. The streets eventually get fixed somehow. Legislation enacted in congress takes awhile to trickle down and impact me directly. Even then it is passed through so many filters that its rarely an agent of the government that has to implement those changes at my level.

I don't deal with the government directly very often. I think this is a good thing. I suppose if I did I would have even more reason to be upset.

On the whole I enjoy a lifestyle that lacks any superficial suffering. On the whole the intent of my government is for what I consider good. On the whole I feel my country has taken positive strides domestically and universally. Maybe not so much globally. On the whole. We still have a ways to go, but I'm allright with progress taking time. This is, after all, a government of 250+ million people. It takes a while for a ship like that to turn and thats probably a good thing.

Well no, I think we are a backward country afraid of moving forward. We claim to be a 'clean green country' but in fact we are actually one of the most wasteful and the waste per person is ridiculously high. The only reason that we can still claim to be 'clean and green' is that we have such a small population (around 4 million) so it is not having that much of an effect.

There is a steady stream of emmigration to Australia (one of my friends and his family moved there to live last year). However we do have a higher minimum wage than the United States, more support for families and no interest on student loans :2thumbsup: .

Though apart from developments which were made in this years fierce election I could go on for hours complaining ... but I won't since some of my views on NZ government have already been expressed in the Self-Determination thread.

Though I intend (in the distant future) to move to Europe to live.

I look foward to a hardline right-wing government.

Well, considering the fact that my government consists of a bunch of pansy manginas who bend over backwards to please feminists whenever they screech about 'oppression,' then no I'm not satisfied. Also, Eclectic has made several points about how the crazy liberal, PC party is screwing us over. On top of all this you have everyone hating the US no matter what our government does and you have a bumbling idiot as a president, so I guess I'm pretty damn dissatisfied with my current government.

You have to admit this administration has made some prize decisions in foreign policy. It's not a Socialist Europe liking the Liberal Democrats thing either, as we were pretty ruddy happy with GHW Bush and his predecessors. Nope, the world hates GW Bush and the neocons, but if Americans choose to identify themselves with their president, why, they'll be lumped together as well.

I voted no. But only because I really don't trust Harper and his bunch of social conservative Albertan loony tunes. The sooner his ilk get beat back to the fringes where they belong the better off this nation will be.

I was wondering what a hardline rightwing government would look like. The Blair government has been to the right of Thatcher on a number of issues.

No. I think it was Lemur who said something like "it's a testimony to our strength as a nation that we can continue strong in the face of our government."

The US hasn't been well governed for a while, that I can think of...

Not always, no. But then I look over at America, and I know it's not that bad over here. They obviously have it a lot worse then we do.

That was semi-sarcastic, in case you didn't realise.

Woah, we have a government?! I hardly ever notice it, we're so neutral. I suppose I should have voted 'yes' in that case but I liked the pie-option better hence 'GAH'.

They're not great, hell, I didn't even vote for them, nor will I ever, but they're doing a fair job. Considering it's only 16 years of democracy it's actually better than most.

So, I vote yes, I'm satisfied with my goverment.

In many ways we've already got it. Blair puts through leglislation which neo-cons would balk at on a regular basis.

No, Im not satisfied with George bush at all. Here in Britian we are different and dont really want to fight with you Bush, we dont want to invade Iran and such. Here in Britian we seem to be the most forward thinking state of America, and our state governer (tony blair) seems to keen to support your every foolish move.

I thought that post was dripping with sarcasm, obviously it doesn't carry well in writing.

SO:

I was insinuating that a hardline right-wing government would be more liberal than what we already have.

Nah , its just that some people have a problem with anyone that isn't British and white enough .
Oh and they can't be the wrong religeon either as muslims can never be British can they ragnar:dizzy2:

Satisfied with the govenment , not bloody likely . I just wish we could change the system for appointing judges to tribunals so we can get the leadership in prison where they belong , or even better give them hard labour .

You obviously haven't.

Well one reason is because of the silly amount of asylumn seekers and immigrants thus i want to retire up in scotland no where near a big city filled with them, there isnt many int he area i live in but they will come its like a plauge spreading across the nation...

I hate the huge numbers of immigrants who've come to this country and changed my life. Well, I haven't personally seen them, but I'm sure they're nasty and I want to get even further away from them than I already am. Shetlands sounds good.

What don't I like about my government:

It is becoming increasingly a PR exercise. All dissent is blocked. Speeches are usually to the converted masses; if someone dares heckles the Terrorism Act can be used - with apologies after the speech / event is over.

Too many "initiaves" that appear, then dissappear before anything happened. Instead of long term planning for a problem, short term headline grabbing appears to be the answer.

Civil Service bloatware. Like some cancer in the heart of the UK it seems to merely increase in size. Gordon Brown obviously likes this as instead of moves to a simple tax scheme (even the report on one was suppressed), we get one that is hideously complex and so required masses of staff to sort out. Oh, and they can mess things up that end up costing £200,000,000 in one year on one part!
And this extends to other areas such as child benefits, jobseekers allowance, etc etc.
Departments that are so bloated even the PM likes to side step them with his own quangos - which effectively mirror areas of the civil service.

Social benefits. Yes, we have people that can complain that their house isn't big enough as they've got 10 kids. Yup, the more they have the bigger the house that they "need". Jobs are there, but many are not nice enough for those that pissed away their (free) education. Reduce them massively. Leisure time is not a right. New clothes / household equipment is not a right.

Education that to everyone that is either impartial or requires use of the results states is getting worse, but the people that run A levels say it must be that people are becoming increasingly clever. 40 years ago about 5% got As. Now it's about 25%. Wow! We are a lot cleverer! :dizzy2:

Immigration. If people want to come here and work, GREAT! There are enough lazy sods doing nothing as it is. We need people who want to work. Yes, that takes jobs away from some - so you'd better get your act together and compete for them!! An economy can grow if the workforce grows. Make good products cheaply and there will be markets.

The EU. Our government is obviously not big enough, so let's be utterly supine to another external power. What's another layer of beaurocracy, eh?

Btw, nobody is fully satisfied with his government. We always have something to complain about. That's just human.

Moros

Well aparently at least 16 human beings on this planet seem to be pleased. ~;)

Anyhow, yeah people like to complain lot. And that's not only a bad thing. It can be a way to lose a bit of stress and when complaining together with others about the same stuff, people will not feel they're left alone in this world.
