Well make a choice we all know which one I like https://img217.imageshack.us/img217/3338/texasprideih4.th.jpg (https://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=texasprideih4.jpg) I know you will make the right choice to.
California dreaming...
I chose Califonria as I don't know any nice songs about texas. Also California looks more interesting. A bad thing about California might be criminality (word?), no?

Wait, did you vote yet ?
I voted GAH.
If you haven't voted yet Californians love the Red Devils.
They love Manchester United?
Speaking of crime and the handling of it. Lets take a moment to look at the respective Governors of the states in question.
Texas has Rick Perry:
http://home.comcast.net/~epkt/rickperry.jpg
First off, nice hair Rick Perry. Great helmet head. Nice ring too. And way to waste bandwitch Rick Perry. Couldn't he have used a smaller picture ? No. Not Rick Perry. Not Texas. There is so much bandwith to go around! We don't need to save! They are very wasteful. Very wasteful. As for crime. Well who is tougher on crime ? Helmet head or this guy:
http://home.comcast.net/~epkt/arno.jpg
Yep. Thats the Governor of California. Seriously. He really was elected. Before I forget, thank you Governor for using such low bandwith. You want tough on crime ? Try to kidnapp one of his kids. Go ahead. He will HUNT YOU DAOWN and KEEL YOU. You're afraid of aliens coming to the earth and killing humans for sport ? Don't send Rick Perry (the silly guy from Texas). He won't do any better than the Governor from Minnesotta. Who was killed. NO. You send in California. Why ? Because he will HUNT YOU DAOWN and KEEL aliens. Thats why.
So lets look at the facts:
Aliens Keeled:
Rick Perry and Texas: 0 (not counting Illegal aliens)
Arnold and California : 2
Keednappers Keeled:
Rick Perry and Texas: 0 (not counting death by capital punishment)
Arnold and California: Too many to count.
Futuristic Robots Keeled:
Rick Perry and Texas: 0
Arnold: 3
I voted GAH.
They love Manchester United?
Aw crap. I guess thats +1 to Texas in the Foreing Affairs department.
Oh wait. Hows this. If you vote California, "you will never walk alone". Huh ?

What I like about California:
HUGE variety of land: rolling green hills and wine country, snow-topped mountains, forests, deserts, coastline and world-famous beaches, huge cities with great night-life, small towns with apple Pie (Julian Pies, best ever), miles of road to cruise on a Harley.
Great economy: Keeps chugging away. The third largest in the world, IIRC. Always a decent job to find for anyone with an education.
Weather: Diverse like the geography, but usually great. Like it hot? Move inland. Like it cold? Move North. Like it 72 degrees all year long? Go So-Cal. No crazy tornadoes, hurricanes, or monsoons. The occasional major earthquake, but thats pretty rare and usually only older buildings are affected.
What I dislike about Cali:
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION!!!!!!!!!! WE ARE BEING INVADED AND OUR PERIMETER HAS BEEN OVERRUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get me started.
The people: EVERYONE has their head up their arse sniffin the farts. Whether they are rich or poor, everyone here is "too good for you". WAY too much attitude in this state. I hate attitude. So-Cal has fake MILFs, loaded with plastic and jewels. Northern Cal has its down-to-earth pockets like Mt. Shasta and Reddding. Mostly the North is filled with super hippy liberals. San Fransisco is its own planet.
The Cost: It is damn expensive to live here. Housing is crazy. Gas is crazy. Taxa burden is bleh- property taxes, sales tax, income tax, gas tax, you name it.
The politics: Dems pwn this state. We only have Ahnuld because the election was a circus, not because of his Republican politics. We should have Tom McClintock. THAT guy would save the state!
What I like about Texas: Cost of living is good, the people seem down to earth, Awesome Food. Politics is Republican and dats good.
What I dislike about Texas: Tornadoes. Illegal immigration. Rhinestone Cowboys. White Trash galore (but that could just be my Cali stuck-upedness). EDIT: And Texas is flat. Bleh.
I still voted Texas. Two words: Texas Toast.

We will soon be electing KNIKY FRIEDMAN who is a jew...and a cowboy. Thats right, a jewish cowboy https://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2656/1912705167cv3.th.jpg (https://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1912705167cv3.jpg) TEXAS IS NOT FLAT https://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2840/texas20hill20countryvc0.th.jpg (https://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=texas20hill20countryvc0.jpg)
What I dislike about Cali:
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION!!!!!!!!!! WE ARE BEING INVADED AND OUR PERIMETER HAS BEEN OVERRUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get me started.
This is a problem. Doesn't Texas have the same problem though ?
The people: EVERYONE has their head up their arse sniffin the farts. Whether they are rich or poor, everyone here is "too good for you". WAY too much attitude in this state. I hate attitude. So-Cal has fake MILFs, loaded with plastic and jewels. Northern Cal has its down-to-earth pockets like Mt. Shasta and Reddding. Mostly the North is filled with super hippy liberals. San Fransisco is its own planet.
There is attitude. But one of the nice things (to me at least) is the dreaded D word. Just like the beauty in the diversity of the land you described California is that way with the people. And for the most part they are tolerant. It really does run the gamut. Crazy seperatist hippys in the north to ultra conservatives in the South and anarchist surfers. And a lot in between. You can be whatever you want to be in California.
The Cost: It is damn expensive to live here. Housing is crazy. Gas is crazy. Taxa burden is bleh- property taxes, sales tax, income tax, gas tax, you name it.
Yes, yes , and yes. No question. While there are still pockets where housing and land are still relatively affordable its a good drive from a beach or city.
The politics: Dems pwn this state. We only have Ahnuld because the election was a circus, not because of his Republican politics. We should have Tom McClintock. THAT guy would save the state!
AND THIS
What I like about Texas: Cost of living is good, the people seem down to earth, Awesome Food. Politics is Republican and dats good.
Well. If you go by elected Governors I'd say Texas is pretty damn Democratic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governor_of_Texas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Governors_of_California
Only one Democratic Governor in California in the past 23 years. And he was voted out in a special election. Texas has doubled that. Prior to '83 in Texas looks pretty damn blue. Don't forget that Nixon and Reagan both hailed from California. Not to say that overall its not a liberal state, but dont' forget the huge conservative base.
I still voted Texas. Two words: Texas Toast.
Damn them and their oversized toast!
We will soon be electing KNIKY FRIEDMAN who is a jew...and a cowboy. Thats right, a jewish cowboy
Sonofa...A cowboy AND a Jew ? There goes the Cowboy-Israeli vote. We still have Hollywood though for those who like their entertainment kosher.
TEXAS IS NOT FLAT [URL=https://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=texas20hill20countryvc0.jpg]https://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2840/texas20hill20countryvc0.th.jpg (https://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1912705167cv3.jpg)

I voted GAH! Vermont is better than both because it has fewer cities. Vermont has maybe one or two mini-cities, and instead of a capital city we have a capital town. Beat that.
I refuse to vote.
I live in Texas. I like Texas; although I have to say that is probably because I live in the very liberal town of Austin. There is no city in California which has as many live music venues as Austin, not even LA.
I also like California. Texas doesn't have real beaches, just tar-covered, crab and horse fly infested sand looking out over depressingly brownish water. It certainly doesn't have anything even close to being as scenic and breathtakingly beautiful as the Big Sur.
You can't get real barbeque in California.
You can't get real Spanish-style chorizo in Texas - just that crumbly crap meant to be scrambled into eggs. And don't even try to ask for Portuguese-style linguica hot sausage in Texas. California also has hard Jack cheese and Anchor Steam ale on tap. Why the hell would anyone willingly eat soft Monterrey Jack if they knew hard Jack existed in great big delicious wheels?
Both states have freeway systems designed by incompetents and sadists.
Both states have generally nice weather. Although Texas has tornados and hurricanes, and California has mud slides and Santa Ana wind and eucalyptus-fueled fires.
Both states have decent wine regions, although California wins this one for now.
California has a big negative in that it managed to elect the Governator. Texas' record in electing governors isn't all that spectacular either, considering Bush and Perry.
It's a toss up.

Texas has better gun laws, so by default texas wins.

Vermont has better gun laws than Texas. (Well I only really know of one which is "better," no special permit to carry a weapon concealed iirc, and since we don't have shootings it does work)
And just so everyone knows I am mostly only doing this because it gets to Strike and it's fun to see him get worked up. Though Vermont is a great state.

I'm a dirty European socialist lefty whingy liberal type....
so naturally I voted for Texas. I absolutely love the place - the people, the food, the cost of living, the freedom, the heritage, the pride.... it's all there.
Seriously, all stereotypes and misconceptions about the place will be blown out of the water after about a day in Fort Worth - except the good ones that is. I love the way that it seems to be the only state where the people love the state more than the country itself.
Unless you decide to go down some Deliverance-style bayeaux I can't see anything too nasty happening to you there, unless you bring it upon yourself.
Californina... well it's ok but it all just feels a bit fake. LA is just an absolute sprawl where people look at you if you walk anywhere, the public transport is crap, driving is even crappier. The most incredible thing is the side of the roads - literally it just looks like every time there is a motor accident (about every 5 minutes) they just sweep anything not still attached to the car to the side of the road. Taking the train ride through Long Beach is like visitting the Small World ride at Disney Land - oh look now we're in richville with super big houses and Bentleys in every drive, oh wait, we crossed a region boundry and now all the houses are on fire.
I like California... but it just doesn't feel that American. It could be anywhere (except Mexico) it wouldn't be out of place if they picked it up and stuck it into the English Channel.
Texas is like nowhere else on Earth:
I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion. And this is true to the extent that people either passionately love Texas or passionately hate it and, as in other religions, few people dare to inspect it for fear of losing their bearings in mystery or paradox. But I think there will be little quarrel with my feeling that Texas is one thing. For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study and the passionate possession of all Texans.

No comparrison. California by miles and miles and miles. LA is not California, it simply recides there as a dynamic city with more diversity than the entire state of Texas. Plus, there is more to do in a week in LA than the entire year in all of Texas. The diversity of its geography; mountain ranges, desert, various farming and/or residential valleys, its national parks (twice as many as Texas, and far more diverse) and public reserves - to say nothing of the Ocean beaches (be sure to visit Leo Coreo and Jalama (ms)- make it by far the more desireable of the two states.
Having lived in both, and in Calif. only being an hour from the ocean, an hour from the mountains, and the same for the desert (though it could be argued that all of So. Cal is) I can't imagine a more promising and diverse atmosphere anywhere.
As for food? One jests? If you couldn't find a good restruant (sp) of any description in LA, San Deigo, the OC, etc. - ask a local. They don't bite or regard you as a foreigner - as is the Texass custom. Neither has the food of Chicago or NYC, but I'll wager Calif. has more 4 and 5 stars than Texas. Miss the Mexican food the most, especially the homecooked of a friends gradmother. There is absolutely no cuisine one can not find in Cal. (LA for that matter), from Indian (name a region) to Sushi bars - Cal wins. Italian? I can name two (one in Glendale, the other in Downtown LA) that are excellent. Heck, I can even name more than a few Texas style B-B-Q places that once inside one may as well be in Texas - they even got that Texas toast (joke of the centuy imo, give me a good crepe anytime).
Winds? Someone mentioned the SantaAnnas - they do howl thru there (So. Cal), but everyone knows once the winds starts up in Texas they don't stop for months .... the SA's last a week or two. The winds in Ft. Worth cause suicides - they just never seem to stop.
Btw, there are more accidents in Texas (and crime) than Calif as a whole, or on average. Glendale has been rated one of the safest cities in America. I don't believe any city in Texas has ever made the top 20 - or 50.
Drive through Texas during a holiday (we got Labor Day coming up, go do it) and what one finds are a buncha drunk Texans travelling 90 mph with would be cowboys hanging off the back of pick-up trucks throwing empty beer cans (bottles) at your car as they pass you - god forbid you try to pass them.
Cal. is alot more laid back. Alot more ... period.:2thumbsup:

I certainly won't, thank you for the advice.
I don't really have a meaningful opinion on either of these places, but IIRC (and I think I do) the Hells Angels began in California, which, frankly, opens a whole man-sized can of pwnage all over Texas's ass. Even the Jewish cowboy's ass (although haviong a jewish cowboy was quite cool in its own right). So I voted California.
But if I had read down the thread before voting and found out that Californians all support Manchester United I would probably have voted Texas. Tant pis.

California doesn't really have a unique cuisine of its own and pretty much wherever you go, you have to go the homeland of a dish before you can find it done to its best. Italian food? In America? Seriously you guys don't have a clue about Italian food - unless you go to a genuine place in New York you're wasting your time. What you think is pizza couldn't even be legally sold in Italy as a pizza. Mexican food is much better in Mexico. Indian food is much better in India (or England for that matter - where what the world now calls Indian food was invented). Japanese is much better in Japan. And BBQ is definately better in Texas.
As for the biting or regarding people as a foreigner nonsense all I'll say is Southern hospitality cannot be beaten. When I went there this summer it seemed like people were talking to me just to hear the accent of my voice. The curiosity and interest in another culture and way of life was definately there.

I see. For those of us who don't have the riches to fly around the world for dinner, the food we have locally available to us will have to suffice. That being said, there are very few places in the world that do as much different food as well as California. Texas ain't one of them.
Being an open culture with coin, talented individuals from other countries establish restraunts in our state. You continue to fly around the world for your bite to eat. I'll take a walk down the street.

Thats because they have little to no exposure to your way of life. You are an alien life form. Phone home and watch the amazement and wonder!
Southern Hospitatliy is great though.
