For some reason I had stop playing MTW for about two years.

Got bored two weeks ago and re-installed the whole thing.

Thought that I had played this game inside out but the surprise was amazingly good. Ok the graphism is not that magnificient but it is much more fun than RTW which I gave up after a few campaigns ...

Good music, no silly assassination/spying animation and the AI does give you a hard time on the battlefield ... My first try almost came to an abrupt end with my good old spearmen running away at the first sight of the enemy :inquisitive: :dizzy2: Silly me to forget that strange princes should not be left in charge of vanillia spearmen .... I even enjoyed the battle agaisnt the horde with the hallebardiers killing an insane amount of MHC in the forest of lithuania (ok waiting until all the horse archers and warriors had run out of arrows shooting trees was not so fascinating...)

Only the diplomacy remains a weak point with the AI always refusing all cease-fire and alliance and setting up a world conspiration between whoever has a border or ship near you once you get dominant (which makes HRE campaigns so hard and fun in the beginning) ...

Anyhow, probably the best buy I have ever made in the field of PC-games. Suggest you re-try it once in a while. It is totally worth it.

Don't forget to try out some of the excelent mods avalaible. I recommend the Armenians in the XL mod.

I've recently played as HRE. I took out the French easily, early and had a brief period of peace (on GA). Now it's not even the high era and until very recently, everyone I shared a border with was at war with me and wouldn't accept a cease-fire. I had to set up my "closest" western defensive borders at Arogone and Navarra. Now the Elmos keep :wall: ing against my legion of Jinettes. I didn't expand too far to the east but kept the enemy down largely with several raids of mounted X-bows.

But yea, try out the mods and don't be afraid to use gunpowder.

Glad to see you've gotten back into Medieval, Jxrc.

I second Vladimir's recommendation of trying out a mod or two, particularly XL (although BKB's SuperMod has received consistently high marks as well). If you do get XL and you're looking for a challenge, I suggest trying Bohemia. I recently found out the hard way (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1222350#post1222350) that you definitely have to have a plan ahead when playing as that faction, and not just attack in whatever direction your fancy takes you.

The Armenians I must say are brilliant to play as, as are the Bohemians, Jxrc.

Ah, Medieval Total War.

It's been so long... All those hours of my youth wasted on a pc game...

Good advice Jxrc. One day I'll reinstall it, so I can waste even more hours of my life on it :2thumbsup:

I'm currently not wasting enough of my life on it. My wife has not, as yet, said anything like the following:

1) You're always on that stupid game!!!
2) What about me?
3) Maybe you should shower?
4) Try not to move the ambulance is on the way.

At present I'm on an Aragonese/Early/Expert Campaign. At war with the French due to me trying to stop them from taking Aquitaine from the English, failed in that but took Aquitaine for myself the following year. So now I hold Aragon, Navarre and Aquitaine. Valencia I missed by a year, the spanish shot in there before me. Not a problem though, as this time I don't want to go down the predictable Spanish and Almohad elimination route.

Unfortunately, I will have to find a way to play on the sly as my wife already invoked 1# (subtly implying 2#) as well as asking me to help with chores more often (no, I haven't stopped going to work yet). It's easy to get carried away and when you get multiple battles, it's hard (can't leave my pc on pause too long). Recently my last victory followed by an autoresolve (wife wanted to eat out, asap) then the MTW program promptly crashed, oh joy wiping out a nice victory aganist the HRE.

I also didn't play for about a year and a half (too busy), but most annoying, my wife brings up an 'age' thing as a reason for not playing. Hey, she watches dramas during my pc playing time, so what difference does it make:wall: ?

Oh sigh, I guess I'll just have to work 'longer hours' and bring my laptop:laugh4: !

May I suggest the VI expansion pack? Among other things, it offers the option to save your game while you are in the pre-battle screen. That way when you finally say to yourself, "Ok, this is really my last turn," and the AI (or your wife) launches a sneak attack, you aren't stuck accepting the results of an autocalc.

VI also lets you choose the order in which your reinforcements will enter the battle. These two features alone make it worth the trouble to me.

You should be able to pick up VI for a song nowadays.

Probably a good idea for those 6 battle turns!
