Rattlers freed in "Snakes on a Plane" theater prank
Aug 22, 6:38 PM (ET)

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Life imitating art is all very well. Unless, that is, it's a movie about deadly snakes on the rampage.

Movie chain AMC Entertainment Inc. said pranksters at one of its Phoenix theaters released two live diamondback rattlesnakes during a showing of the film "Snakes on a Plane" last Friday. No one was injured.

AMC spokeswoman Melanie Bell said, "One was found in the parking lot during the show, and the other in the movie theater. They were both removed, and no one was harmed."

The snakes were later released in the desert.

Bell had no further details.

The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, and spins a yarn about a crate-load of escaped snakes that run amok on an airline flight, attacking passengers and crew.

"There were kids at the show, and it was actually very reckless," Russ Johnson, the president of the Phoenix Herpetological Society told Reuters.

"The snakes' bite carries a powerful venom that could have seriously injured someone," he added.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe.

Any more questions?

Bloody hell, if you are gonna do a prank don't do it with the intention of hurting people... maybe put lifelike imitations on peoples' seats or use harmless snakes that look poisonous (actually, don't do that).

And Vladimir, congratulations on your 1,300 posts that will soon become a reality.

Would it be cynical to suggest that the whole incident may have been made up to promote the film?

Probably. The damn thing has had so much publicity, there is no need to make up stories.

A blurb on IMDB said that this was a psuedo-hoax. It stated that a small rattlesnake was found in the building, not in the theatre itself, and the police have no cause to believe this was done on purpose. Can't find a link yet.

Edit-> Wonderful, Google returns a link to such a reputable site, TMZ. Oh well, take it for what it is:

If someone did that it could almost be called a terrorist act (imagine releasing hundreds in a public place), or at least attempted murder. Though it doesn't look like it was intentionally put there (acoording to drone's link).

Why were there 'kids' at the show? (I don't have a clue of age certificate, but I reckon it's at least a 15)

And why is it important or at all relevant that there were?

Why not say 'there were middle-aged people at the show'?

Actually they didn't get caught according to another article that I read about the same thing. The one in the original post does not say that they got caught.

So they get off jack free anyhow because no one caught them.

I also found this story to be truly hilarious when I first read it. I am not sure if the snakes are really as dangerous as the articles say they are considering that the guys brought them in in their own backpacks which would have posed a danger to their own selves if the articles' danger statements are true. I'm thinking perhaps the articles are exaggerating the danger quite a bit.
