Answer:
I found there are only 2 ways to use custom battles together with the -mod switch.

1) Create your "mymod"folder in RTW root. Copy BI data folder into it. Start game using "..\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-BI.exe" -show_err -mod:mymod. **
2) You run BI.exe -mod. Don't state a folder just "-mod". In this case you mod the RTW datafolder.

** In this article (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=55119) there is a mention somewhere about the minimum files that need to be copied to your "mymod" folder for this.

I have a strange problem.

I created a new unit with all the trimmings (except it's not recruitable yet), I used it under it's original name changing everything in the original datafolder. It worked fine.

Then I tried to add it more permanently. I created a folder for my mod copied the datafolder. Added the unit under it's new name.

Now when I run the mod everything works great untill I start the batlle.
When I click to start the battle , the game throws me back a few steps in the menu and when I reach the "start battle" button again, it doesn't react anymore (only the button).

I can go back and forth but I can't start the batlle.

When you say, added the unit under it's new name - what exactly did you change?

Also, when you say you created a folder for your mod - do you mean that you're running it with the mod: switch or have you copied the entirety of your game?

I changed the name from bucellari to empire_sp_marine.
I changed EDU and EMB and EDENUM, I changed the model file name, the unit card and description. I also canged descr_projectile.txt and new_descr_projectile.txt. And I added the crossbow skeleton (with modified animations).
I'm sorry but if I get more detailed on what exactly I changed in the files this will be looong post, do you need it? Because then I will post it.

I run BI.exe with the -mod:WH40K switch. I created the WH40K folder in RTW folder
and copied a clean RTW data folder into it.

When I run the game, I can choose my new unit in the custom battle setup, I get the unit card and everything.! I just can't start the battle.

If you need still more detail, let me know. I'll give you a complete rundown then of all changes in detail.

N.B. I had most of this working ,except at that time I added the unit to RTW under the name bucellari. I changed RTW datafolder for this (not BI data)! Then I ran BI.exe with -mod switch with no folder specified (so it starts RTW).

It seems to have nothing to do with changes I made to the units, c.q. files.

I deleted everything in my mod's folder and pasted a clean copy of the RTWdata folder into it.

It results in the same problem.

So it's something to do with the way I use -mod:Mymod

Basicly, if I put anything else than BI data folder in "mymod" folder , I can't start custom battles anymore.

Have a look in the Modding Answers: Custom Battles (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?catid=114) category. There's an answer there about using custom battles with BI that might be relevant.

I had a look (allready) it doesn't help.

I tried everything. The only way I can get anything in the sub-folder of RTW "mymod" to work in custom battle is:
If I copy the whole BI data folder into my "mymod" folder and run RTW-BI.exe with the switch.

Just modding it in the RTW\data folder IS possible of course.
