Google is only giving me a name difference. I can't get anything other than completely similar definitions.

Why do we have Culverins in game and not Cannons?

Culverin was AFAIK a name used for cannons and sometimes even for early arquebus/musket.

And if you follow the link to cannons on that page it appears the weight of the shot was used to describe it's name
