A mere army captain gets promoted and leads a very successful life? I think I can say, hands down, the Seleucids are my favorite RTW faction. I love RTW (as well as BI) but I never really got into it. Now, I have played farther than most other campaigns. The only other campaign that compares on the scale of my Seleucid one is the Greek Cities and the Brutii. My faction leader was lucky right from the start. He started his military career as a mere army captain in Sardis. I had just elminated the Egyptians. I wanted to go after Parthia, but I didn't want to jeopardize my alliance with Pontus as they were allied with Parthia. That would all change however, when Pontus would betray me. I had bribed Pergamum from the Greek Cities. One turn later Pontus beseiged it with a near full stack army. I had to respond with a near full stack from Sardis. In my way, however, was a Pontic 3-star general with a 1/3 stack army. And thus a great leader was born. After that battle, I got a chance to adopt a general being he was "man of the hour." Right away he had four stars at only 19. I immediatly made him my faction heir. A couple game years later, my faction leader died. At only 21 he became faction leader. Talk about lucky! In only a couple years from mere captain to faction leader. I used his army to conquer all of Asia Minor. I then pushed into Armenia and took them, and then finished off Parthia. Their most northern city had no family members so it turned rebel.I had started making Memphis a military training center as well as Antioch. Once I started building a whole new, advanced army I decided I wanted him to lead it. And so I had to take him all the way from Arsak to Memphis. That took quite a few years. I took him to Antioch and then sent his army by boat to Memphis. Once retrained I sent him to take back Africa from the Scipii. The Scipii had a very large army in Africa. Even though my screenshot shows Numidia as still around, they are gone. The Scipii has many full stack armies. Well, having nearly 1,000,000 denari helps out with some of them. Having a top-knotch army with reinforcements helps with the rest. :duel: And there you have it. The beginings of a superb general in a nutshell. It will be a sad day when he goes. Is there a way to edit the files to give him immortality so-to-speak? j/k :laugh4: What are some of your best-general stories?

Ive had generals like that....in one of my first EB games (Casse) my beginning faction leader I think went and lead the unification of britain+ Ireland then later attacked mainland europe were he died at about 68 or something... I quit that campaign though since an evil CTD at a very very very close battle

if your favourite general is getting old you can always save the game just before your turn (while the rebel icon is up). you have to do this every turn.

press esc
save
choose quicksave

then continue.

if he dies you can quick load (ctrl + L) until he doesn't die that turn. if you keep him alive long enough (117 I think) he reverts back to 0 and will not die of old age again for another 60 years.

I had a Brutii campaign where a little captain named Manlius commanded a stunning victory with only two cavalry units over a Greek mix of militia hoplites and Illyrians. He was adopted for his bravery, and then rolled all the way up the Greek peninsula in some truly epic battles. He then conquered the Ionian coast, and sailed in an emergency to Patavium to stave off a Gallic invasion after those pitiful Julii failed to do their job. Wherever he went people feared his name. "Here he comes, Manlius Victor! Run for your lives!"

He beat the Gauls at Patavium at the age of 55, and was welcomed to the city as a highly decorated Roman hero, Victor, consul, faction leader. The man had basically done all the hard work for my faction, so I thought I would give him a little rest.

The problem was, Patavium had the ideal conditions for indolence. So, he began drinking rather heavily, slept around, and basically became the model university undergrad. Except he did still read on occasion.

His fall was so precipitous that when I next took a look at him a few years later, he had become "Manlius the Womaniser". Oh dear, I thought, we've got to get this guy out of here! So I marched him northward to take the tiny Gallic village north of Patavium.

Perhaps I sent him north with too little to work with, or perhaps it was the winter snows. But there on that wilderness field he fell. A truly tragic end to what was, on the whole, a noble and brilliant life.
