View Full Version : Worlds most hated countires
In your estimation, who would you say are the worlds most hated countries ? You can focus on one or list your top three. Or do both. Like this:
1. France
2. England
3. Belgium
10. United States of America
France - Hated in SE Asia because of their slave driving plantation ways. Rest of Asia may like them. Hated in Africa for the same. Hated in Europe for being invading imperialists and invaded roll overallists. Hated in Large parts of South America. Disliked only mildly for reactionary reasons in North America. Hated in Australlia because. Antarticans love them.
England - Asians don't hate them. Africans do because of the colonization. Australia treats them like kissing cousins. They hate them yet love them. Same with the Indians. With some exceptions the rest of Europe is generally mild towards the English. South America isn't too fond of them.
Belgium - Asians hate them because of their women. Africans love them because of their balloons. The Belgians hate them. England is envious because of the beer.
USA - Asians love us because we import a lot of rice and electronics. Africa loves us because we didn't do any of that colony junk. European countries generally love our sophisticated taste in food, tv, and pretty much all art and culture. South America enjoys our humble attitude.
So yes, my list is crap. But thats because I'm from America. We have lots to keep track of here nevermind what France said about Niger. What about yours ? What countries are the most hated world wide ?

I personally lived in Asia for a loooong time (and quite close to the old Crown Jewel of France, Indochina, for that) and the only anti-French sentiment came up in history lessons around the Colonial period. Out of the classroom and the French looked just like any other Westerners out there.
And I've heard Francophone countries aren't exactly hateful of their former masters. No more than the English, or perhaps only a little bit more.
Your list is kinda weird, no offense. Personally, I think the US is generally recognized as one of the most hated countries in the world, if only because people can point it out on the map while most wouldn't be able to locate Honduras or Nepal to hate. That and being powerful and active internationally tend to give you a lot of bad publicity, and envy, and hate...

My top 10 and reasoning why:
1) USA When you're on top, everyone else is jealous. Everybody else looks at the USA and says "screw them, we should have all that".
2) Israel One thing Europe and the Middle East CAN agree on is Jews belong in America only.
3) Japan The rest of Asia hates Japan much more passionately then they do #1 or #2.
4) UK Former colonies have lots of axes to grind, that and their friendship with #1.
5) India Every muslim in Asia dreams of converting the subcontinent to Islam and cannot understand why the Hindus resist.
6) Russia: former satellites still have lots of animosity, many in West believe they still have dream of global domination.
7) China: The bigger they get, the more they climb this list.
8) France: Slowly sinking on this list as their strategy of appeasing everyone outside of NATO continues to pay off.
9) Thailand You can only be the world haven of pedophiles for so long before people start to get sore.
10) Egypt Making peace with Israel, at least officially, has left them out in the cold in the Middle East.
It would be interesting to start a second thread of "Who do YOU hate most", my guess is USA would top that list with all of non-Americans, and half of Americans as well.~:0

1) USA When you're on top, everyone else is jealous. Everybody else looks at the USA and says "screw them, we should have all that".
Pretty much. It isn't jealousy though. People just don't like powerful nations that push them around. Sadly, America is doomed to be hated now and mocked later.
2) Israel One thing Europe and the Middle East CAN agree on is Jews belong in America only.... that doesn't even warrant a proper resonse. :inquisitive:
3) Japan The rest of Asia hates Japan much more passionately then they do #1 or #2.
A slight exaggeration, but they are definately hated in China and Korea.
4) UK Former colonies have lots of axes to grind.
See the latter of my first sentances, pretty much sums it up. The only former 'colonies' that really dislike us are ones that we truly f***ed over, or ones with notable Irish populations. Shock horror. :laugh4:
5) India Every muslim in Asia dreams of converting the subcontinent to Islam and cannot understand why the Hindus resist.
That's bull. The only muslim nations that hate India are those that share it's rather awkward borders.
6) Russia: former satellites still have lots of animosity, many in West believe they still have dream of global domination.
I wouldn't say they're hated. People are just weary of them.
7) China: The bigger they get, the more they climb this list.
Certainly can agree with that. Aside from Tibetans, Tibetophiles, and it's own citizens not many people really dislike China.
8) France: Slowly sinking on this list as their strategy of appeasing everyone outside of NATO continues to pay off.
True. A few countries in Europe do still dislike France, but I wouldn't call it HATE per se.
9) Thailand you can only be the world haven of pedophiles for so long before people start to get sore.
:laugh4:
10) Egypt Making peace with Israel, at least officially, has left them out in the cold in the Middle East.
A temporary thing. If it comes to war, I don't doubt they'd leap at the chance to kick Israel in the nads.

<JOKING>
1. The US (Anti-Americanism shows that all nations in the world have at least something in common and that we could all one day unite under that, hold hands around the globe and sing old time classic Soviet and Al Qaeda hymns over uncle Sam's corpse...oh well except the US that is)
2 Israel. For some reason 20% of the planet hates them and want to kill them in the name of....their own God....go figure... To make this more interesting, Christians and Muslims take turns hating them or loving them (Jews were actually finding refuge in islamic countries some centuries ago)
3 The UK. (although more than a US state than a country now...). Hated and loved by their ex-colonies ("They exploited our natural wealth...but lets go see the queen anyway'). Admired by people like Hitler and Dubya. A very self-hating country too. The Brits love to think that everyone hates them...which is why they gave Tony Blair a 3rd term even though they hate him. It makes sence...maybe...
4 Yurop. Thats not really a country...but dont tell the republicans...
5 Australia. Hated by:
1) The ASEAN (because of Australia's 'we wanna join your union but you cannot migrate here if you are yellow' policy)
2) The northern hemisphere (because they go swimming when we are freezing our butts off)
3) Me: Because they produce Olive Oil and wine...these are European stuff. We dont produce cangaroos, they should not produce Olive Oil.

You guys have it all wrong here...
:stupido:
North Korea: Do these guys have any friends?
:stupido:
Iran: Again another nation that has popular support (though unlike North Korea it's not because of brainwashing) but very little outside support.
:stupido:
Israel: Let's not kid ourselves, our nations are with very few exceptions (that I can't even think of) based on conquered land. A lot will probably have histories of genocide and/or expulsion (U.S.A). But Israel is a relatively fresh country. The wound in the Arab world is fresh. Too bad that if Israel were to fall, it wouldn't be at the hands of a Saladin. At least not from the current situation in the Arab world. :shame:
I think Don Corleone makes some nice points.
I personally hate Americans only when/because they brag about their superiority. As long as they behave normally, I may rather admire them, it's the constant "look at our equipment"/"we are soo 1337 because of..."/"noone can ever beat this or that" etc from some people that makes me hate at times.
Since I don't have an idea about many things and even my hate for the french doesn't exist anymore, I cannot really give a list.~;)

So yes, my list is crap.
I figured having Belgium as the 3rd most hated and the USA as 10th would be enough without having to use smileys.
Frankly, this is more of a learning thread for me. Your post provides insight that I wouldn't otherwise get. Good example of why I started the thread. How are the colonial countries viewed ? Was one generally more agreeable than another ?
Wow, I totally overlooked Israel as a potential top 3.

I think what he means is that you hate what the country represents and yorr picture of the stereotypical inhabitant. In the case of the USA and Israel, perhaps it extends to hating each and every last citizen, but generally, it more relates to hating the 'idea of so and so".

Exactly. And I think you're right about who would win the "Which country do you dislike the most" poll. The optimist in me is holding out hope that there is enough hatred of other countries to disperse around the globe that we wouldn't be a runaway favorite....but then again...
Who really cares, what nation is the world's most hated?

No, Iran belongs to an Alliance between Russia, Armenia and Greece. I think the U.S. is hated because of George W. Bush. Despite the US congress best efforts, ever yeer he vetoes the Armenian Genocide Day bill because he doesn't want to hurt Turkey's feelings. And, Armenia gets no assistance in our affairs because we are just one of the few deomocracies in this part of the world. But, beside GWB, I love the US.
I think North Korea is the 1st.
China is 2nd.
France is 3rd, they never reelly make anyone happy.
UK is 4th.
US is 5th.

Its more like a 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' for Greece's relations with Iran and Russia. A strong Iran gives our own terrotorial rivals (I am Greek) something to think about. I do not think that the Iranians like us back though, I ve heard that they never forgot the whole Alexander thing.
The Greeks (as the people, not the government) will in general sympathise with anyone the US tries to 'liberate' because we had a 'nice little US made' dictatorship ourselves. All Greeks love to hate America over a burger and fries.

A very self-hating country too. The Brits love to think that everyone hates them.
There may be some truth in this, because I think the most hated people must be the English. The distinction between English and British is important, because the Scots are widely liked and admired and the Welsh are generally ignored. Throughout our history we have managed to antogonise a large portion of the globe. The English are hated by the following, in order of intensity of dislike and with reasons:
1. The Irish (Cromwell, Penal laws, potato famine, black and tans, partition)
2. The Scots (Edward Longshanks, Culloden, the Act of Union, Highland clearances, a mistaken belief that we try to rule them, when if fact the reverse is true - Blair and Brown are Scots)
3. The Welsh (Edward I again)
4. The French (Hundred years' war, Malborough, Trafalgar and Waterloo, Dunkirk and D-Day)
5. Germany (Two world wars)
6. US (Wars of independence and 1812)
7. Former colonies (Exploiting them and still behaving as if we are superior)
Nobody likes us - we don't care.
The US have a long way to go before they upset quite such a wide range of other peoples and nations, but they are making a brave attempt to overtake us.

@ Duke: so basically people who hate England have been whupped up good - they're just bad losers :laugh4:, but since 1776 and all that I think the US don't really count. The UK just bites the pillow in that relationship nowadays.
If anyone has a real and justified grievance against England it has to be Ireland. Our track record there has been appalling.
As for France, all Englishmen have to hate the French, it's a condition of nationality :laugh4:
I think the US comes the top of many lists not because of "jealousy", "hating freedom" etc but more out of long weariness of being forced to live under US puppet governments. Despite the recent rhetoric of "bringing democracy to the world" so much of past US foreign policy has depended on installing and propping up some of the world's nastiest dictators and juntas. The Shah of Iran, Saddam Hussein, the Taleban (yes, when the Soviets were in Afghanistan), Noriega, and just about every Latin American government throughout the 60s and 70s all benefited from US patronage. Couple this with the tendency to only care about "human rights and good governance" when they're being breached by enemies, but not by friends (eg Saudi Arabia or Iraq -- who was the worst? Who cares, who was America's ally???) There's a sense that a bad government only becomes bad at the point they fall out with the US - even non-governmental forces such as Al Qaeda. SO much of the world's trouble is now caused by monsters created by the US who subsequently slipped the leash and went off on their own and started biting the hand that fed them. And the solution? Usually to go in there with guns and mouths blazing to set up a new set of puppets in a vicious cycle that experience warns us will go on indefinitely. US foreign policy has no values, only interests.
It does seem with the exception of a few "built up" hate figures (eg Iran, N Korea) all the "most hated" seem to have in common one particular characteristic: a never-ending willingness to interfere in the internal matters of other countries. Coincidence, eh?
Quite simply:
1st: The United States of America, the government is hated not so much the people in general, although fundamentilists detest the values of US society.
2nd: Israel, hated by all number of fundamentalists because the nation of Israel was imposed upon the Middle East, an area containing people who have a strong passion of dislike for Jews (as do quite a large percentage of the world).
3rd: Italy, because they dive.
4th: The United Kingdom, we always make the list somehow, the Irish hate us (rightfully I must say), the Scots hate us, the Welsh hate us, the French are our eternal foes, the Middle East hates us because we are the USA's lapdog, Australians hate us and the list goes on.
5th: Japan, definately hated by the Koreans and Chinese.
Note: I did not add North Korea, because lets face it people don't hate them, they pity them. Also I disagree with Australia being on the list, we are mistrusted by Asia, but the world loves Australian tourists.

Sheesh,
Israel
The middel east hatred for the US is 80% due to israel being there, Europe loves the US anyway, the France bashing is all in good fun, even sie Germans can occasionally laugh with the jokes made about them, nobody really minds the UK, Belgium is just small and boring with really good beer, so you're all jealous.
Israel it is !
Who really cares, what nation is the world's most hated?
Its a jumping off point. What lies below is up to the posters. Could be Liechtenstein, could be that Russia, Armenia and Greece have a common enemy. Could be the idea that the English not only are hated by others but by themselves, and they really don't care.
I still don't know who the common enemy of Armenia, Greece, Russia, and Iran is, but I'm putting my money on Turkey.
Curious about the Enlish being hated and being unmoved by the hate. True ? If so does this differ from France. Is this why the French are as Don puts it "Slowly sinking on this list as their strategy of appeasing everyone outside of NATO continues to pay off" ?
Were the French somehow effected more by percieved wrongs in their forieng policy that they have swung the pendelum in the other direction while England has for the most part stayed on the same path ?

This is a remarkably silly thread, wherein even my poor attempt at derailing with an unwarranted attack on Liechtenstein went begging.
Just for the record though, we Irish (in the vast majority) do not hate the English (or the British). We have had revenge for any historical misdemeanours by humilitiating you in the Eurovision song contest several times, then inflicting Michael Flatley and Riverdance on your people and opening cheesy theme pubs throughout your gentle shires.
Consequently, everything is considered quits. (Though you haven't twigged about the war-crime known as Ryanair, and continue to line up for more punishment in your thousands).

No the correct answer was nothing. " I am going to do nothing becuase America is vastly superior". Greece should be hated just for horrible food. I was force fed feta ovgo pastitso and Baklava from a young age and have never forgiven my yia yia. Im not Greek I shouldnt be forced to eat that stuff.:furious3: :laugh4:
I butched the food names

See now thats why you boys never win a popularity contest.
You know I think people keep picking France and Britain because know where they are on the map and everyone thinks they know what the countries are like.
I may not know where Liechtenstein is on the map, but I have no problem humming the tune to its national anthem, and nor does any other Englishman. The problem with America is they do not respect the cultural symbols of smaller countries as the English respect the Liechtenstein anthem.
Oh don't be so sure of this statement. Such generalizations are easily shown to be false.
For instance its not uncommon in South Korea for the servicemen and women to greet Korean civilians in a like manner.

Exactly. The International Liechtensteinery Illuminati Military-Industrial Complex Brotherhood of Psion-Vaduz have infiltrated every level of British life and have you all singing their national anthem, even at your football matches.
They're even taking over the US as his Grace notes.
You all think that they only have 34,000 subjects but they have lederhosen.

Seems like a country-bashing fest here. This has the potential for a good topic, but risky waters nonetheless.
(1) Israel: Because of an ages-old dispute over the rightful ownership of land by a peoples as ordained by God. Both sides have the same "it's mine, God said so" mentality, so animosity is unavoidable. Furthermore, Muslims by and large simply despise the ethnically Jewish, making them scapegoats like so many other tyrants have in history. Sadly, even the nations of Europe have contempt for Israel's pursuit of permanence.
(2) U.S.A: Hated by Muslims the world over because of the States' support of Israel. The nations of Europe disagree with U.S. policy and are angered by the United States' combined will and capability to project power into neighboring theaters. Does Europe hate the U.S.? No. More like a disagreement of ideals.
(3) Iran: Hated? Iran is a menace that contributes to Islamofascism, anti-Jewish fervor, and global instability. A nation of hate itself, Iran is not so much hated as it is considered a pain in the ass.
(4) N.K.: The government of N.K. is even lower than hated. It does not deserve the status of hate. The government of N.K. is simply in que to crumble or be destroyed. No one hates the victim citizens of N.K.

For anyone unfamiliar with Liechtenstein's National Anthem, here's an mp3 of "Oben am Jungen Rhein" (music only) and the lyrics to the 1st verse.

Oben am jungen Rhein
Lehnet sich Liechtenstein
An Alpenhöh'n.
Dies liebe Heimatland,
Das teure Vaterland,
Hat Gottes weise Hand
Für uns erseh'n.

Well done guys, minimal bile. But it is too close to the bone as far as the idea of country bashing.
The rules are going to be tightened up for awhile. I don't expect this to become the Frontroom. I just expect you to be polite to each other.
So I expect more postive criticism. What is wrong, what is right, how can we fix what is wrong, how can we use what is right in other nations.

Nice. However the Yanks got in first.
My country,' tis of thee,
sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing;
land where my fathers died,
land of the pilgrims' pride,
from every mountainside let freedom ring!
IIRC this was the USA national anthem before that star-spangly thingamajig...:sweatdrop:
As for which country....Scotland. I lived there as a teenager, I've never experienced such hatred and bile from the majority of the population, before or since. Just because I am an Englishman.
So I reciprocate with my intense dislike of our northern neighbours......

Spooky coincidence and slightly off-topic, but on radio 4 last night it was claimed that Britain was the first country to adopt a national anthem and everyone else started to adopt them after seeing the English king being lauded by his subjects in full voice. Dates back to the 18th century I believe, but didn't catch the exact date (I think the Egyptians were routing at the time and their screams drowned out my radio :laugh4: )
So Liechtenstein can go jump ... :book:
1) Israel, because of so much conflict and turmoil in the middle east. No one likes it when the fuel prices spike.
2) USA, because we support Israel and play world police. We try to do good but always mess it up. We're like big dogs in a small room, everytime we wag our tail we knock something over. And because of our high and mighty attitude.
3) Russia, because of the whole USSR thing.
4) Great Britain, because they were the number one superpower way back when but now they support the new #1
5) Iran, because they keep rattling their sabres and supporting terrorist.
6) North Korea, same as Iran in addition to being the weapons peddlers of the anti Western Europe/USA world.
7) People's Republic of China, because the western world depends on their manufacturing ability and they are becoming more powerful and there's nothing we feel we can do about it.
8) Pakistan/India, because they keep fighting each other and destabilizing south Asia
9) Pakistan/India, because they keep fighting each other and destabilizing south Asia
10) France, because they used to have an empire and take advantage of their colonies and their just like American's with their high and mighty attitude.
