Here is my Hungarian campaign ( RT expert level) at current stage and its history.

Initial conquest proved to be suprisingly easy, much differet than in unpatched PMTW 1.5. My Hungarian forces were quickly able to defeat several Turkish armies capturing Moldavia, Serbia and the priceless Hungary reclaiming the lost heritage...

Here are few screenshots from the battle for Serbia. Ottoman counterattack was foiled rather easily.

One warwagon unit is generally enough to protect the flank of the army, especially with infantry support behind.

Notice the number of enemy cavalry killed by the warwagon crews.

Later the fate has changed. The old ally of Transylvania - Persia has fallen. Hungary were invaded and brave Transylvanian army had to abandon Serbia leaving a token garrison which was subdued after brave and hard but ultimatelly hopeless battle.

The infidels invaded Moldavia after that. Prince Karoly fought bravely together with the grizzled Scottish musketeer (who killed entire unit of enemy cavalry in h-t-h combat) and Border veterans. The cannon crews were fighting till the end, but were overwhelmed too.

You can download the record of this battle here - place it in your SaveGames/Battles folder in order to watch it as a recorded clash.

Inspired by his example the remaining 14 men left from the original army defeated Ottoman hordes storming their castle - not a single enemy was left on the field of battle !

The enemy is advancing in their hordes towards Hungarian capital, but will be defeated :2thumbsup:

1643 was the year (ish) and my armies were locked in bitter warefare with the ottoman hoard. My territories streacheched from hungary to volgabulgaria and the scandinavian provinces. The ottomans owned everything beneath wallachia, to italy and stretching all the way round to morroco. My general was clashing again with his favoured enemy, Price Osman (a 7 star general no less) in Croatia.

Prince osman was leading a force of nearly 7000 against my own 1000(ish). He was bringing artillery, cavalry, muskets and infantry in great numbers. I decided to give battle. Over the ensuing 2 hours, I held and broke wave after wave of ottoman attacks, my precious few cavalry and infantry being whittled down by missile fire and combat. Slowly my force was being drawn off my defencive position. early on I had a lone unit of cavalry flank their artillery and cut down the amount of gunners they had, limiting their effect. Still, they failed to slay all of them but thankfully it ment the ottomans could only bring on about 10 units at a time to attack.

After my ammunition was exausted on every gun and musket, I slowly retreated, holding a rearguard action with the strongest units left. Over 600 prisoners were put to the sword in the withdraw, and many more ottomans slain as they assaulted the remains of my force.

In the end, a lone pike unit was holding out against the entire combined enemy force, slowly being ground down, but only when their number reached 20 and the ground was strewn with dead ottoman cavalry and infantry did their morale even waver. I called them to rout, just as my general exited the field.

The result:

I got the 20 that fled back via ransom :)
And then came back the next turn with a mostly-fresh army (same commander though) and then held another counter attack after. :2thumbsup:

Whoooa ! It is getting even more interesting in my Hungarian campaign.

Ottoman invasion was stopped. I managed to gather an offensive force and re-take Serbia. Unfortuanatelly the Ottomans had little respect to my 9 star general.

They came with an army 11 times bigger than my.

The result was a long and difficult battle. I defeated wave after wave of attackers killing hordes of enemies and when I was almost sur that the victory is mine my brave general was killed by some cowardly Bedouin Camel warriors...

In his memory I am posting this.

Later after several new battles in defense of Hungary and the carpathian capital of Hungary the situation stabilied. I gathered new army and attacked Wallachia which was recently conquered by the Ottomans. Visctory was mine and Ottoman counterattacks in Hungary proved to be futile. At this moment the Wallachians re-emerged with some 6000 soldiers led by two mighty generals ( 9 star leader and 6 star historical hero - Michael the Brave). I ordered a retreat aiming at provoking Wallachian-Ottoman war, but the sneaky Wallachians invaded our mountain capital and sent another force to attack the Ottomans in Bulgaria - at the same moment the Hapsburgs re-emerged in Croatia ( were subdued by Hessen-Kassel !) - the situation is getting more and mor interesting.

Worry not - the Hungarian empire is impossible to stop !:laugh4:

Well as far as numbers are concerned I can't come up with something comparable, but I had quite a tough battle last night. I was playing as Poland (high, hard) and was attacked in Prussia by the Danes. After I had forced them out, I concluded that it would be a good idea to push the frontier to Pomerania in order to avoid further damage to precious Prussia. The turn I attacked, the Danish king moved in and retreated, but came back next turn.....with one hell of a force! He just outnumbered me 2,5:1 or so, but was at 7 stars against my 4-star place-holder general and brought with him only armoured landsknecht pikemen, scottish musketeers and quite a bunch of heavy Danish cavalry, all of whom assaulted my rabble army which to a certain extent consisted of some inferior national levies remnants. It was really tough; some mercenary musketeers and mounted arquebusiers were holding off and distracting much of the enemy onslaught, and after I had beaten off the first wave the enemy chose to retreat. Luckily, his king was shot and both of his princes also got killed, so the battle meant the extinction of the entire Danish faction....considering the outcome it was a very glorious victory, even if it doesn't really show up in the numbers. I wish I had taken a picture of their deployment....

edit: damn how again do I insert decent pictures....and oh yeah: how do you guys attain such amazing kill ratios for your artillery? They never seem to hit anything even if I direct them at the largest throng, whereas enemy cannons are quite annoying most of the time.

I aim at the largest crowd or/and shoot at close range. I often redirect fire to claim more victims, byt it that battle the last screen come from my artillery crews killed numerous enemies in... close combat - I had to use really everything and the 'fearsome' charges of these guys really changed more than one melee.:inquisitive:

Nontheless, regimental cannons are probably the most deadly and effective artillery imho, although they shoot in a bit different way then other guns

Cheers!

After erazing Wallachians and conquering the whole Balcans ( partly due to the unexpected death of Ottoman leader from the hands of the Wallachians..) and kicking the English from Lesser and Greater Poland, Volhynia and Moldavia, Kiev and Levidia I decided to engage the superpower of late XVIIth century in my campaign the Spanish...

I attacked them in Croatia in a running battle dealing with almost only my cavalry alone and invaded Constantinople where my junior general managed to kick them badly too. In the next turn this happened:

https://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b356/cegorach/superbitwa.jpg:dizzy2:

That was really something...

The funniest thing is that both enemies attacked each other killing their generals so my 'brave' army except some scouts stayed waiting for the enemy to cross the river. Anyone who did got shot.

Only my artillery engaged the enemy in the beginning and both cannons scored over 100 men killed.

In the end I lost only 7 men eliminating over 1200 killed and about 600 taken - I have crossed the river when enemy started running away. Oh brave, brave sir Cegorach :inquisitive: :laugh4:

Anyway it was like witnessing a gang war with some little hope that the villians will kill each other 'Lock, stock and two smoking barrels' I guess...

Sometimes you just get lucky... :juggle2:

:jawdrop: my gosh! I've NEVER EVER seen a force anywhere near this in size (apart from the horde)....how did this happen? Did the Wallachians reappear that turn? Their army "composition" suggests so. Oh lord! Just good that you stole such an easy victory.

[Did the Wallachians reappear that turn? ]why on virtual earth would they reaper in constanople? did they rule it?.

cegorach
12-21-2006, 20:24
Yes, they did. Because it happened in Constantinopole which they conquered some time earlier ( I killed the Ottoman sultan and they grasped the opportunity) their army consisted mainly of the rebel units such as those pikemen.
Armies reappearing in homelands are much more realistic.:book:

7000 ? Dear God !

Do you have a screenshot ( F2 or PrintScreen) ?

There is a topic in the MTW1 Main Hall where it would make some people die from envy:laugh4:

How do you capture screenshots like that?

cegorach

F2 - go to the TGA folder in the MTW directory.

It is a good idea to edite the screenshot changing it into a jpeg - because it is easier to upload.:2thumbsup:

So it's F2. I was just going to ask. And with Paradox it's F10 right? F12 I think are the cheat codes. Might as well ask in one place!

F2 here, F11 for Paradox. Of course in MTW you get TGA files so you need to edit them first.

I'm sorry I don't have screenshots at this time, but i'll have to add them at a later date. Before I go into detail about my battle, the campaigns never seem to work on my comp (probably because of a corrupted version of Medieval) so I just invent my own on custom battle. I build up both our armies, and then fight the battles. Simple. By the way, these battles are written in an in-universe style, as if it actually happened.

Anyway, here comes a battle modeled on Crysler's Farm:

The Battle of Warsill Farm

The Northern counties of England have revolted against the government. They seek self-government under the overall suzerainty of the English crown. However, the Government certainly does not see it that way, after the rebels burned a line of forts. The rebels sent down 8,000 men to try and invade the Government held areas. All they had to do was defeat General Perkin Neville, his 800 infantry and his 120 cannon crews manning three guns.

As the rebels marched onto the field, they were exposed to a withering artillery fire. This artillery fire killed their commander, which brought down the heart of the right flank of rebels. Then, the infantry opened fire. For the next hour or so, the loyalists were subjected to a series of attacks by the 8,000 strong rebel army, but none of them could break the line.

The 3 guns under Geoffrey Talbot ran out of ammunition, and in a gallant effort, they charged the rebels on the loyalist right who were outflanking Neville's force. Time after time the crews charged, and routed entire battalions of militia. Finally, after sustaining heavy casualties, the centre and left of the rebel army broke and fled. The right flank withdrew into a forest.

Neville's troops re-formed, and launched a surprise, devastating bayonet charge into the stunned rebels. What remained of the rebel army fled. The battle had been a hard struggle, but the outnumbered loyalists had won the fight. They sustained 107 casualties but the loss to the enemy had been far greater: 4,171 had been shot or cannonballed, and 219 were taken prisoner, many by the cannon crews.

For the loyalists, a decisive victory had been won.
