View Full Version : CTD Always In The Same Place(s)
Hey guys, long time no post...
:help:
I've got a little bit of a problem which is finally getting to me. Occasionally, I'll be part way through a campaign and then suddenly the game CTDs (during the campaign screen, just after it's done the vices and virtues for that turn). What's really bugging me is that if I reload the most recent save, the game always crashes at the same point.
This normally seems to happen when I have I'd say half the provinces under my control. I've just had it crash seven times out of seven in the exact same place (English, Expert, Early Era) and I had five out of five on a campaign a few days back (Picts, Expert, Viking Era).
I've tried moving a few of the more obvious armies and agents around, in an attempt to make whatever's causing the bug not occur, but no luck...
Any suggestions? I'm patched to 2.1, got the latest GFX drivers (downloaded them when this first started happening a few days back).
Another issue I sometimes get is that occasionally right-clicking a province for info causes a CTD. The reason I mention it now is that I just got that today on a province I'd conquered the turn before the repeat-CTD mentioned above, so I'm wondering if there might be a connection?

This happened to my recent campaign save - it's doomed! I think this kind of thing just happens occasionally and I don't know if there's a solution other than to revert to an earlier save and hope the problem doesn't reoccur later. I tend to use 3-4 saves for my campaigns, saving every hour or so in one of the save locations. However, sometimes I rely on Quicksave a bit too much. Fortunately for me, my previous save before the corruption/problem was just an hour beforehand, so hopefully I haven't lost much (although I suspect the great victory over the scottish rebels where I slaughtered 1800 men for the loss of about 25 men has gone).
So basically, if all else fails, go back to an earlier save and fingers crossed, you'll be ok from then on. It sucks, but what can we mere peasants do.
Aye, my last save was, unfortunately, 20 hours before... and most of that was a hardcore playing session!
I wonder, is it just some kind of graphics issue or an actual problem with the game itself? If it's the latter, I'd expect to hear more complaints about it (a lot more), but if it's the former...
I wonder if it could be worth swapping save files? So one person can load another person's bad save, go through the bit that causes it to crash, then save it and hand it back? If it works, it could save a lot of replay time.

This sounds a lot like a corrupted save game file, rather than a video card driver issue. The usual suggestion is to start over with an older save game file.

This might be your only option to salvage those 20+ hours of game play. But I wouldn't be overly optimistic if it truly is a corrupted save game file, as they tend to crash at the same place no matter which machine they're played on.

I also get crashes sometimes, right at end after a battle has been finished and the pc goes to calculate other changes. I find sometimes that having less saves causes less problems. In other words, I have a 100 game save slots, but usually only using between 10 to 25 seems to cause less problems. Don't ask me why, I had the same problem running MTW on my laptop which had less hard drive space than the desktop. It seems like with more game saves, I am more likely to get these corrupted files that crash sometime after the battle finishes. I have also had the same problem in campaigns, but that is far more rare, and usually it seems to be caused by the same problem, though sometimes I have reverted to an earlier save if eliminating game saves didn't solve the problem.
So I would suggest first reducing the number of saved games you have, and only if that doesn't work, try an earlier game save.

As far as I can tell this doesn't help at all. I also encounter corrupted save game files every now and then and I can absolutely assure you that I never used more than, say, seven or eight slots at the same time. one campaign usually has one slot for its save game, I don't want to induce myself to load too much when things go wrong. Also I don't know how many games of yours get corrupted but with my ones it's maybe one out of ....seven or so. fortunately the quick save helps me out most of the times....

When I keep my game saves down, not too many. I forgot this last campaign as I was away from the game for almost 2 years. Now I am playing on the sly, so I hope not too many, perhaps once every 20 to 30 playing sessions (I save a lot, sometimes after shifting men in case I need to replay), so I just try to remember to delete more often before the game saves pile up too much.
Ah... Save files are something I tend to have a lot of, and I want many more...
I'm quite happy only having one or two saves for my active campaign (and I usually only have one campaign going at a time), but the only OTHER problem I have with the game is that I often get the 'crash after starting new campaign' bug. In effect, every time I start a new game I save it before doing anything, so that I can always replay that game if I want without having to face the aforementioned bug...
Of course, this means I aim to have some 60-odd save files at some stage!

Those corrupted files are a pain. Tpday, had one bring down a battle in the middle, very unusual. Don't know how they can be avoided completely.
