View Full Version : Cavalry won't chase routing troops?

I've noticed on occasion that some cavalry units will not chase routing troops. Double-right-click on a routing unit, and nada -- your unit might turn to face the routing troops, but that's it.

I've always found this frustrating, but it was especially so this evening as it cost me a battle. I was outnumbered 3-1 and my whole strategy relied on surprising (succeeded), routing (succeeded), and killing off the enemy's two best units (failed miserably because my general wouldn't run down the miserable buggers).

I don't think this is specific to EB. Any idea why some cavalry units occasionally do this?

Happened to me before in vanilla and almost cost me the life of a family member. Try having them move to another position and then attacking - this seems to get them moving again.

There should be a button labelled "pursue routing enemy" per unit. It would be a nice way to just sit back and no longer have to manage the already victorious battle.

This usually happens when you cavalry unit is 'sitting on top' of the enemy unit; to rectify this problem try moving your cavalry back, away from the direction that the enemy is routing towards and have them charge them again. This is a ridiculously annoying bug though, and requires an excessive amount of micromanagement on supposedly effortless process.

This happens when you are assaulting cities where the defenders are assisted by reinforcements. its a bug which still hasnt been fixed in v1.5.

after a while you may be able to get them to persue, however the fleeing troops have usually made it into the towns walls by the time that happens.

Ah, the AI was sallying out from behind its walls. Thanks for clearing that up, it was driving me crazy not to know why it was happening.

I had a general yesterday who just sat there in a battle. His unit card said he was fighting, but I couldn't see any enemies. He wouldn't move or go anywhere. This game has some occasional things that will continue to mystify us all.

Oh, thats the rather infamous shadow boxing bug that happens usually when the unit your cavalry is charging into gets decimated by another unit before it completes its charge animation, methinks.

It has happened to me sometimes, that a dead enemy unit that has been overruned by a cavalry charge, is still there on the battlefield, and the AI counts it as a live soldier. Any unit that walks over his dead body gets trapped, and stays "on guard" as if like he was fighting against that guy...

It has happened several times... And the annoying thing is that when you have a 20men cavalry unit, and two guys just stay watching the fellow that lies dead, it makes impossible to chase routing units, due to pathfinding problems (the unit is split, so it chooses a middle point between the units blocked, and the rest of the unit) so that it ends chasing the routing units some 50 meters to the left of the unit...

humpffffff.

This only ever really happens to me in seiges, when the enemy sallies and I pursue them.

Hmm. That was what was happening when my general wouldn't pursue them too. They sallied out, then were fleeing back into the city and my guy just sat there.

I think they need to be able to draw a path to where the enemy is fleeing too, to be able to give chase. I noticed that my cavalry couldn't give a damn as long as the gates are open. As soon as they close my guys decide they want a holiday. Normally end up at least making some ladders so I can open the things myself.

Come to think of it, it was my general too!
