Yup, this is where people start talking about 'landmass ratio' and whatnot.

You see I have made a map for Alexander by cutting part of mundus magnus. First time it did not work, so I started from scratch and made it for TERRAE EXPUGNANDAE. And still, the CTD is as soon as I select the map from the menu. No error message. What could cause this?? :dizzy2:

Actually to suprise you I wasn't going to mention landmass ratio! (unless you've expanded bit of map you cut - anyway crash doesn't sound right)

Don't know about ATW as don't have that yet (and have heard map structure is different) - but as you're now on RTW - did you mean crash happens when you select 'provincial_campaign_name' from Provincial map menu?

If so its likely to be problem with
provincial_campaign_name_regions_and_settlement_names.txt
in the data/text folder
provincial_campaign_name has to be exactly the same as the name of your provincial campaign folder in
data/text/world/maps/campaign

May possibly also be to do with something being wrong with that file (but can't remember if that gives same CTD)

Well now it works right up to the point the loading bar reaches the VERY END of the bar... WHY?

the torment...

This is the area of the map. Would that cause any problems?

Couldn't think of CTD for end of loading bar - but just found one whilst looking for something else.
attempting to play as faction that still has
dead_until_resurrected
line in descr_strat does it. But I'm sure that would be too much of a co-incidence!

Any one else got any ideas???

I don't think its landmass, map_regions problem, rivers or invalid generals names, they all crash out of campaign selection screen or at least earlier.
Problems with radar_maps CTD's about 3/4's way down bar.

The guide to CTD's lists

Campaign Map Loading CTDs:
- The game is loaded but the screen is centered onto a buggy region (see the campaign map scrolling CTDs),
which sounds like it might be at end of bar.

I had one before while I was editing the BI map, I could never find a cause for that either. Should I post the files?

You might as well post it, it probably needs some-one with TE to look at it properly though (assume you're still working on that version). I definitely can't load that as my computer is quietly having indigestion in the background working out how I can possibly re-arrange partitions / programs to get enough space for another version of RTW/BI to try out ArthurianTW - Note to self: must figure out how that mod switcher program works eventually!

On the theme of compatability you could try minimising possible problems in strat, take out all leaders traits, etc except faction leader / heir, make every settlement village, reduce population and remove buildings, and simplify all armies to 1 / 2 units you know exist in EDU. Don't know how complex your descr_strat is to know if that is feasible.

OK, I'll continue mapping tommorrow. I think I may recode it for vanilla.

I have recoded it for vanilla, and minimized descr_strat, but no help. Still precisely the same CTD with no error message. How should I upload the files?

I've used
http://www.filehosting.cc/
to upload things, works roughly like imageshack does for images. When it gives you link, copy and paste that into reply.
If you put it on that hopefully other people will have a look too.

Otherwise you could Email it to me

EDIT: Link removed.

Assuming you're now using RTW 1.5, delete the map_heights.hgt - do not attempt to replace it - it doesn't need it and in your case really didn't like it (it did sort of load on my computer, but I really don't like my graphics that physcedelic !!!)

get rid of the .hgt file, delete / re-name the map.rwm again and it should load fine.

P.S. your macedon faction leader is standing in the sea, but that won't actually stop it loading!

Unfortunately now you're back to trying to find out what works in Alexander!

I can't believe it was that simple!

Yay! I mad my first working map! :fainting: Time to get to work on it...
