I am reading a book, imported from the US called Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. Very good book, eksept I do have to consult the wife on big English words.
Any way, I was wondering what stories about Genghis Khan/Temujin are true and what is rumor. Did he really have his brother break his Shaman's back? Did he really let the common people flee to Samarkand before attacking? etc...
Also, I noticed that there are Paralells between Temujin's rise to power and the other book I am now reeding: Ender's Game. Pretty trippy, or maybe I am just imajining this.
I must say, the Great Khan is so misterius and now I do not know what is trash and what is truth. He lead a very interesting life.

Did he really have his brother break his Shaman's back?
His Shaman had delusions of grandeur. This was punishment for publicly humiliating his brother.

Did he really let the common people flee to Samarkand before attacking? etc...
The common practice was to show mercy on those who surrendered and to punish those who did not. Bukhara suffered, while the citizens of Samarqand were spared. Prisoners were generally used against their own, an exercise in minimising casualties

Grandeur? And I don't know what you mean by using prisoners on their own? Thank you, though. I find it interesting how the Steppes were so religusly diverse.

Sorry, I will explain. His Shaman had been actively undermining Chingis Khan's position, gaining support from many and generally putting it about that the Khan did his bidding. To this end he publicly humiliated the Khan's brother when he went to demand back those who had defected.

Maybe I should have said against their own kind. The prisoners were used as standard carriers and were the front ranks in the many seiges that followed
