Dianetics, the basis of Scientology (http://skepdic.com/dianetic.html)

On page 5 of Dianetics, Hubbard asserts that a science of mind must find "a single source of all insanities, psychoses, neuroses, compulsions, repressions and social derangements." Such a science, he claims, must provide "Invariant scientific evidence as to the basic nature and functional background of the human mind." And, this science, he says, must understand the "cause and cure of all psycho-somatic ills...." Yet, he also claims that it would be unreasonable to expect a science of mind to be able to find a single source of all insanities, since some are caused by "malformed, deleted or pathologically injured brains or nervous systems" and some are caused by doctors. Undaunted by this apparent contradiction, he goes on to say that this science of mind "would have to rank, in experimental precision, with physics and chemistry." He then tells us that dianetics is "...an organized science of thought built on definite axioms: statements of natural laws on the order of those of the physical sciences" (Hubbard, 6).

What they have to say (http://www.scientology.org/en_US/religion/presentation/index.html)

Dianetics comes from the Greek words dia (through) and nous (soul). Dianetics could be said to be what the soul is doing to the body. It provides answers to the fundamental riddles of the mind with a thoroughly validated method that increases sanity, intelligence, confidence and well-being. It gets rid of the unwanted sensations, unpleasant emotions and psychosomatic ills that block one's life and happiness. Dianetics rests on basic principles that can be easily learned and applied by any reasonably intelligent person—as millions have. It is the route to a well, happy, high IQ human being.

Dianetics addresses the part of the mind that operates below the conscious level, exerting a hidden influence that causes you to react irrationally, say and do things that "aren't you," and have inexplicable emotions and ills that hold back intelligence and ability. It all resolves with Dianetics.

It's so vague, me thinks.

Do I need to say that I think that they are dead wrong, and probably con artists?

That's all i can say on the topic of Scientology.

They seem to confuse IQ with intelligence, based on their wording. Nobody who does that can be taken serious on 'mind science'*

Why is scientology so popular in the backroom today ?

*I'm calling it mind science since it cannot be categorized as psychology or neurology

Anyone with any sense will notice that they are con artists. Look at this, the more money you pay into the church, the higher ranking member you become. Obviously a con.

But thier actualy beliefs are just as likely to be true/false as Christian, Muslim, Jewish and any other beleifs though, keep that in mind, until one religion is proven, they dont have the right to tell other religions that they are false.

Because I was going to post this in the other thread but it was closed first.

The bit about some dark alien lord yes. This business about dianetics is an easy target though, since it can be tested.

They think all the mental problems in the world exist because some alien lord, name Xenu I think, dumped a bunch of dissident aliens on our world, and now their souls inhabit our bodies, or something like that.

What amazes me about Scientology is that with what seems to be a completely stupid and fantastic set of beliefs, they still think they have the right to say that other religions, which would seem far more sensible than Scientology itself, are ignorant.

Even so, it remains that as Shaun said, their religion is just as likely to be true as anyone else's.

EDIT: Oh, and if you want an example of Scientology's credibility:

collectively described as space opera by L. Ron Hubbard, science fiction writer and founder of Scientology.

Ahum that stuff is kinda :dizzy2: I always thought scientology was the intelligent design group, and I always thought that it isn't that rediculous, now I understand why so many people mock it :dizzy2:

Dumping Nicole Kidman for that teacuphead should have made me think....

It's one hell of a stupid cult, mind you. Dune is more believable: Hail, Kwisatz Haderach!

In Dune they don't even have a religion, though FH has thought more about religion than Hubbard imo

Scientology = Pure invention.

When I first read about the xenu issue I thought it was some kind of joke. Now I know that it's not, it does confirm what true crackpots scientologists are and what docile impressionable halfwits their followers must be to believe such tripe.

It's hard to believe how some seemingly intelligent people believe in Scientology.

It's a cult of clinical psychology, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and psychiatry, which means they have the power to control people. Kind of makes you question if you've been affected.

I think Christianity has a similar effect on people, but in an emotional way. He "died for our sins", right? But he came back! Ugh.

Exactly.

If you attack Scientology, you are basically attacking all religion. You may say 'oh, but we have faith in Christ, that makes him the Son of God' and so on in that fashion but Scientologists have faith in their seemingly crack-induced religion and people of other religions must accept that. If you are of another religion and you attack it because you think it is a made up bunch of lies designed to gain control over feeble minded people, the same must apply to your own religion.

Now we atheists and agnostics on the other hand can make fun of scientology all we want. ~;)

Everyone seems to be missing that Scientology is more then a story of how the universe was made and a set of morals. It claims to have a model of how the mind works and offers treatments based on that model. But if one puts this model under scruiteny, it falls apart.

Even so, it remains that as Shaun said, their religion is just as likely to be true as anyone else's.Not exactly. Not every religion proposes an actual material being wich creates, saves or condems all of us. Many use supraempirical rational constructions to portray their message, the Three Religions are a clear example of that. The history of intelegible reality can be traced back to Heraclitus and Parmenides, and their dialectic of the existence. Parmenides thought that everything that your mind could construct was real, thus intelegible reality. As the religions evolutioned they preached learning by comprehention, instead of observation, later even deduction from this intelegible reality. Anyway, just a note, I'm an atheist, so I don't believe in pure intelegible reality or pure mental constructs, to me everything has to be manifested in the tangible reality, however I'm not as naive as to think that I'm the right one and everyone else is wrong.

Now, going backto the subject, if Mr. Whatever-his-name-is, says that an actual being, tangible and real, came here and poisoned our souls (or whatever is his thesis), then he'll need to prove me that...

Right, but the point I was trying to make is that all religions contain areas of assumption, and until we know more about the universe, there is no reason why God's existence shouldn't be more likely than the universe being created from the droppings of thousands of squirrels. We simply do not know these things, and so anybody who claims they do know is as right/wrong as anybody else who does until the 'truth' is made clear (which I don't believe will ever happen to humans).

I understand your point, but it seemed like you wanted to compare all mainstream religions (I say this so I don't have to enumerate them), in their basis, to this simple bunch of crap. Sorry if I misunderstood your point.

I think that Scientology is just a cult taken to corporate level. Some of the deaths that are linked to that business are very shady indeed.

It is an insult to other legitimate religions to call it a religion. Other religions need money to exist, scientology only exists to make money.

Since all observable evidence is merely at the discretion of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (http://www.venganza.org/), it is quite clear to me that He altered L. Ron Hubbard's understanding of the universe by means of His noodly appendage and for His own purposes, presumably to test our faith.

Criticism of the Church of Scientology often brings to light the story of Xenu. The Church has tried to keep Xenu confidential;[1] critics claim revealing the story is in the public interest, given the high prices charged for OT III, part of Scientology's secret "Advanced Technology" doctrines taught only to members who have already contributed large amounts of money to the organization.[2]

Bwahahhaa. This makes me laugh. How ridiculously stupid do you have to be to fall for this? I agree with Idaho, this is a shame to all other religions.

Whoever wins got to rewrite Xenu's Bizarre Adventure and sells it to the general public.

Agreed.

The bold bit tends to suggest it is a load of bollocks, as they know they have to brainwash people before they will believe such bollocks.

Agreed. Hubbard was convicted of fraud, wanted, suspected of numerous other criminal acts and died while hiding from authorities.

Worse still is the two other Scientology front groups. One is called Narconon - which purports to be a drug rehab group, the other is an anti-psychologist group (because Hubbarb was a paranoid psychotic and detested psychologists).
