View Full Version : General unit size
Just wondering what are the factors that effects the size of general's units. When I played Romans, the first generation of generals has size around 40, and the 2nd generation of generals has size around 100, some as high as 120. When I played Cathage, the generals have size around 40 all the way to 200 BCs with the exception of King and heir who have size around 100. Any answer is appreciated.

Aparently all Romans have extra large generals, making them a killer.
What I've seen is that younger generals start out with a lower number, and as the general get older, the number increases.

That is the behavior I have observed with Cathagian generals, but with the Romans, after the 2nd generation, all generals starting out with 95+ unit.
I like to mention that the unit sizes mentioned above are under "Huge Unit" setting.

to me similar things happen, but in my case, all romans start with about 40, in the next turn will have about 70-90, and in the third turn they'll have a 100+....and i have the script on...other things is that the first gen has equipes singulares, whereas the second gen, and adopted, and promoted captains, get equites consulares, even before any reform, still in the first 5 years of the campaign...any one know how to solve this issues?

Roman generals have the wrong bodyguard unit in 0.74, so only the starting mebers have the correct units and sizes. The equites singulares unit come first in 0.74 EDU before the equites consulares and both have the general unit attribute. It hink for promoted captains the game chooses fro any unit with this attribute in EDU and the first in the list for family mebers.
To solve the problem either remove the attribute from the equ. sing. or add generals_unit_upgrade (or similar) to them in EDU, or exchange their position there.
The generals bodyguard size is also effected by the generals influence level.
And yes I noticed those cheating romans in the ULPP.
Bodyguard size is also increased with the security rating of the general.

Is it reduced by penalties to security as well - such as things like Victor, etc.?
There has been some research into this in the Ludus Magna. The conclusion was that general's bodyguard size was determined by his influence and the bonus/penalty to security his traits & ancillaires provided him. Faction leaders and heirs also seemed to have greater bodyguards. (Link to Investigation of general bodyguard size. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=47146))
Thanks, everyone for their replies and the link to a formal study of general unit size. Been very helpful. Wish we could get dev documentation on RTW as we could know effects on everything.
