I think it depends on which country you come from. It was mainly middle-eastern countries but things could have changed.

If you are connecting, yes you go through a security check. I'm not sure, because whenever I come back, I stay in the country, but I'm pretty sure they scan your lugage, make you declare what you are bringing into this country, and possibily search your luggage at random. I don't think they take your picture.

When going to Australia from London (Air New Zeland), we had to refuel in Los Angeles. I had brought some US dollars to shop a little jelly bellies or twizzlers and some other American goodies.
We stood in line to go through the security for two frickin hours and had to board the plane again with no goodies.
This was back in 2002.
A security check for passengers flying so-called non-stop London – Auckland.

Ah, yes good ol' LAX. Word to the wise, if you're on a chartered flight DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT Have your Layover at LAX (Salt Lake City is much quicker and without Security Checks). When I flew in from Denver in June, it took me three freaking hours to get off the plane :wall:

My last trip to LAX (during the liquids issue a few weeks back) was smooth as ever, it took longer to get to the car rental place than to land and get off the plane. The crappiest part is the fact I was packed like a sardine for the whole trip from Detroit.
Hello, legs, you still there? Zzzzzzzz.

Can't say I've had problems flying through LAX for domestic flights. International to points west can be a bear.

Well agreed. I guess the flight in from Denver... which took roughly 3 hours to get off the plane was because most flights had to be diverted from San Francisco because of poor landing/take off conditions there.

Anyway, coming in from New Zealand was even worse. I think I was in the air for 2 hours waiting too land and then spent about 4 and 1/2 hours on layover to Denver. Maybe I just have bad luck?

But yes, the Freeway is the real bear, especially if you're driving at Rush Hour Times (12:00 and 5:00), I used to clock out of work at 4:00 without taking lunch so I could get home by 6:00.:furious3:

I hate saying β€œit was a good drive; it only took me 2 hours to get home.”
Traffic there and around there is definitely the worst, maybe in the world.

Oh no, I'm with you on the international flights. I flew in from Denver on my way to Cambodia and it was a mess. Barely made my connection. On my way back I missed it. Same thing happened to me on a flight to Palau. I've had better luck flying through San Francisco, especially since they revamped the international terminal. Domestic flights have treated me pretty well through LAX, but I'm usually flying during off peak hours.

Agreed on SLC. Had my first stop through that airport 3 weeks ago. Pretty damn painless.
