Wal-Mart, like um or hate um, are pretty smart. They offer you low prices on prescriptions and make you walk past all the tempting items in the store to get to the pharmacy in the back of the building to pick up your cheep drugs. I’ll bet anyone going in for a prescription comes out with a half a dozen other things they probably didn’t really need. Of course, someone with any self control (not me) could probably save a few bucks.

TAMPA, Fla. - Wal-Mart announced today that it will start a test program in Florida, where it will sell generic prescription drugs for $4 for a 30-day supply. The test will start tomorrow in 65 Tampa Bay-area stores and is to expand to the whole state by January.

On average, generic drugs tend to cost between $10 and $30 for a month-long supply.

The world's biggest retailer said Thursday that it will test the program in Florida and it will include 291 generic drugs available for conditions from allergies to high-blood pressure. The plan is available to its employees and customers, including those without insurance.

The $4 prescriptions are not available by mail order and are being offered online only if picked up in person in the Tampa Bay area.

Interesting choice of location. With all the retirees in Florida, they should get plenty of customers.

Curse them and their cheap, decent quality goods! How dare they provide the lower-income with good value!

It's not so smart of them as one might think, it's simply them using common marketing principles that would be "old hat" to anyone in the marketing industry.

It's also pretty much the same reason why any stores including Wal-Mart ever have good sales.

Wal-Mart is a horrible company. They treat there employees like crap and monoplize small towns. Yes there low prices are great until they are the only store in town in which case things get a little bit higher. Not to mention Walmart is notourius for illegals. That makes my blood boil

On the plus side, they were out-competed in Germany by other market companies like Lidl and Aldi. Seems that they just can't compete if it's illegal to treat employees like subhuman dirt.

They are being out-competed by Tesco in the Uk, which isn't the cheapest chain, just the smartest in marketing.

I'm your man to answer wal mart questions

Your average performing supercenter will have around 40-50 percent of its DAILY GROSS SALES coming from the pharmacy. Thats fairly amazing considering how many people go into these stores and never visit the pharmacy but walk out with buggyloads of other things.

A medicated nation indeed.

Also, FYI, 90% wal-mart generic versions of hot sauce, canned veggies etc are manufactrured by a major label company and labeled Great Value version. They recently changed the labels so you can't see this anymore, but trust me, if you buy Del Monte green beens instead of Great Value green beans you are a retard because both are made by del monte but Gv version costs 15 cents less.

ok im done

Hey, I know!

We should outlaw Wal-mart, or make them pay more to employ people! That'll make the employees happy, as they are currently serfs without the freedom to quit their jobs. Who cares if Wal-mart can't hire as many people? Surely not the people who rail on behalf of the workers while not working there themselves.

I refuse to step foot in a Wal-Mart I'll pay the extra .10 cents at Wal Greens for medication, that way I can avoid the Humongous lines, the crappy service, the dirty floors, the screaming babies, and snot nosed kids, the Teens doing Meth in the hardware section, and trying to outrun the whores begging for a quicky while trying frantically to open the door to my car so I can make as fast of a getaway as possible.

That's more or less my opinion. I hate WalMart- but not for the PC political reasons we all hear about. Nobody is holding a gun to our head to make us shop or work there- people do it willingly and eagerly. I hate the place because it's filthy, crowded, and has absolutely horrible service. It drives me nuts how they use their store aisles for storage too- you cant get through to place without tripping over skids of shrinkwrapped merchandise. I avoid WalMart whenever possible.

They're obviously providing goods and services that people want- so good on them for that, but I choose to shop elsewhere.

Rule: Never pay $5 more dollars for THE SAME THING. Seriously, you can find the same things at Wal-Mart for a lower price than at other stores, so who cares about being PC, or being crowded?

Although the ones in my area seem better than some that have been mentioned I still try and avoid them mostly because of the hassle, but if I were a person that needed several prescriptions and could save a $100 bucks by going there, I would.

I saw on the news this morning that Target will match the $4 price at all the stores in competing areas.

The only reason I go to Wal-Mart is because they sell DVDs for $5.99, the only problem is that a lot of them are movies, I've already seen or ones that I won't watch, and I end up leaving with a bag of apples, because it looks suspicous walking out of a store empty handed. And their ATMs don't charge fees.

Yes but by putting it at the back of the store in gods waiting room they must take steps to ensure that the old folks can actually make it to the cash register before they keel over .
Perhaps they should set up a special slow aisle between the pharmacy and check out , with extra width for wheelchairs and plenty of seats for rest stops .

Ah. I think Wal-Mart has already figured that out, the one here has the pharmacy right between the entrance and the check out aisles. It's dodging the 50,000 Rednecks that seem to swarm from all directions, thats the real problem at hand.

Hehe Walmart (Asda in the UK) complained to the competition commission that Tesco were too big.

The irony that Walmart would do that is just beyond belief. Competition is still great here. For parties you can just pick up proper glass cups because it's so insanely cheap... :)

I think it's a common misconception that corporations are always pro free markets. Most will gladly abuse government regulations to smackdown competition whenever they can.
