missile infantry: Longbowmen
hybrid infantry: Janissary Infantry
light cavalry: Polish Retainers
heavy cavalry: Chivalric Knights
missile cavalry: Boyars

pavise arbalesters
Jinetes.
Feudal Foot Knights (dismounted Druszina(sp?))

I have to go with Jinetes aswell, loved them heh

Janissaries were lots of fun, slaughtered a massive Papal States crusade with a mostly janissary (heavy infantry and the infantry/archer hybrid) army once, lots of fun just smashing through their lines showering them with arrows and chasing them off the field and then meeting a wall of new reinforcements who were slaughtered.
Feudal Sergeants are pretty big for me. I think I made more of them than any other unit ever. They held the line in Europe AND Outremer. They're also the last spearmen to ever face a challenge, since by the time I could make Chivalric Sergeants, I was already unstopable.

Bonnachts, Gallowglasses, Almogavars and Boyars.
For me it has got to be the Viking Huscarles. They were just as good as the VG's (with the armour requirement to build) and were available with only the second castle upgrade. I have fond memories of demoshiling anything before with with them and a few(maybe 8) knights. Playing as Danes I would build 3 every year so they could last all game and because of hem no matter what christian faction I played as my first goal was the conquest of scandinavia.
Man I loved those guys.
After them its very close fight with the Gothic Knights. Even beter playing as HRE and conquering Scandinavia early and haveing an army of 8 Huscarles and 8 Gothics. Goddamn talk about slaughter.

1. Kataphraktoi
2. Crusader knights (Teutons, Templars and Hospitallers)
3. Feudal Foot Knights
4. Varangian Guards
5. Pronoiai Allagion
6. Byzantine Infantry

Janissary Heavy Infantry
:balloon2:
In vanilla, it probably is boyars or gothic knights. Very tough.
But in the XL mod, strange as it seems, my favorite is the Cuman Warrior. :laugh4:

Almohad Urban Militia.
Completely ficticious I know, but they were easy to get, +1 Valour in Granada and close to iron upgrades. Oh, and they kicked ass in Early ~:)

I think I'll have to resort to categories as well:
Light Infantry: Gallowglasses
Heavy Infantry: Halbardiers
Missile Infantry: Nizaris
Light Cavalry: Spanish Jinetes
Heavy Cavalry: Spanish Lancers
Missile Cavalry: Sipahi of the Porte
Antagonist
1: Kataphraktoi
2: Saxon Huscarles
3: Polish Retainers
4: Crusader Orders foot knights (awesome art)
5: Feudal foor knight (Aawesome art)
Too bad the drawn unit images in their discription are replaced by their ingame image

I had a few I just loved:
1. Gothic Knights*
2. Lancers
3. Kataphrakatoi
*The only reason I liked Lancers almost as much as Gothic Knights in the original was because Gothic Knights didn't have lances, but now that they do they will definantly be my favorite unit.

interesting i am exceptionally excited to play as the venetian heavy infatry, however there are certain factions that would be rather unexpected to be in the gme such as the Sicilians as i am also very excited to try their units out too.

NAZARI
my favorite unit in big mp battles, fast, great ranged dmg and they had very good attack stat, they could flank with the best of em
also arbs, but they were such a needed asset to all armies that i wont say they are my favorite as everyone had to have them most of the time
otherwise i would say almohad urban militia, for the price they couldnt be beat as heavy inf
this is my opinion before the cheese lancer patch, i quit after that...so others may prefer the heavy cav
Gallowglasses for their single use fire & forget ability to cut their way into a tough enemy :)
More mundane, Militia Sergeants, the backbone of my armies, easily available in good numbers and sturdy against most enemies.
Chivalric Foot for small numbers deathsquad style overkill (Gothics with their crusader Great Helm that should have been a Sallet just didn't do much for me)
Least favourite, actually the popular leader around here, Jinettes; every time I tried using them they did hardly anything then got pannicked & ran away even when used in the most favourable circumstances I could find.

The Swiss Armored Pikemen in Vanilla and the Huscarls in VI. I loved both for their great everything.

Gallowglasses and Highland clansmen. Extremely high offense, cheap, and well....very low defense. My favourite light infantry by far. Since Scotland will be playable in 2, I fully expect the clansmen to return, and the Gallowglasses will probably be back too, hopefully.
Honorable mention for abyssinian guard and Ghazi infantry. Axemen are fun for their armour piercing ability.

Woodsmen! The ultimate unit for low-cost armies. Gallowglasses and Clansmen, if you hold Ireland or Scotland. Gallowglasses have 8 charge and 5 attack, that's the same as Chiv knights have :2thumbsup:
Sword Infantry: AUMs
Spears/Pikes: Saracens
Anti Cavalry Infantry: JHI
Armour Piercing (Flanking) Infantry: Ghazis
Missile Infantry: Futuwwa
Light Cavalry: Steppe Cavalry
Heavy Cavalry: AHC
Missile Cavalry: Turcoman Horse

Strange nobody mentioned Italian Light Infantry. THE best spearmen in the game: Same stats as Order Foot, and easily available in numbers even in early - if you played Italians, that is.
Arbalesters (not the Pavise ones - too slow).
Boyars. Nothing beats them. Nothing. At all.
Billmen. Always reliable, always available, always killing a lot. But only for English players...
Ghazis. Gotta love 'em! So fun, so unpredictable, so deadly. Same goes for Nizaris, but the buildup was a bit steep.

remember when mtw first came out and everyone wanted to be italy, for the italian infantry unit in mp games
Oh goodness, how could I have forgotten to mention my Ghazi Infantry? ~ Jinnettes are still my favorite, but Ghazi's were a very close second! The're the best shock infantry in the game, IMO. :2thumbsup:
Chivalric foot knights. Not that I use them that much (that would be cheating - they are just that good), but I fell in love with them when I saw them go through any enemy like a shark through a surfer. Just amazing to watch.

Longbowmen but the relatively accurate 'snake-gun-thingie' that could take out the enemy general was fun.

Murderous devils. You will never see a unit of Kataphraktoi die faster, than those with a unit of these loons charging downhill out of a forest straight into their rear or flank.

Janissary heavies! :2thumbsup: You can always trust them in harsh conditions. Fierce, strong and versatile at any any rank.

Janissary Heavy Infantry -- and the beautiful Turcoman Horse. Nothing like savaging some armored, horsed Christian louts with the JHI, but it was another thing entirely to run circles around your enemy, and then to crush his tired, demoralized host while the arrows were still fresh in them ~:pimp:
As for VI: the berserkers. Ghnyharrr nnyharr nyharr ~D
I liked mounted crossbows:
(1) ammo lasted for the whole battle - a good backup once your archers were dry.
(2) crossbows were decent against armour.
(3) being horse archers, they could keep out of trouble.
(4) especially because they were fast, which was also good for hunting down fleeing normal cav.
(5) did the vital job of hunting down routers.

light infantry: Gallowglasses and kerns for their low cost, and their suitability for the desert campaigns. Tho Ghazis were also great.
heavy infantry: Order Foot, for their looks (and reliability) or AUM, for their hungry blades! :skull: and low cost!
missile infantry: Longbowmen. Way too obvious, but undeniably stunning to watch in action.
light cavalry: Alan Mercenary Cavalry, fopr their speed.
heavy cavalry: Gothic Knights, for their mace-wielding strength in melee.
missile cavalry: Jinette Cavalry (despite their need for micro-management), for their ability to mess up mounted armored units, then chase/sweep routers at the end of a battle.
Basically, I really loved cheap early units that you could afford to replace in droves, but that still did their job well. I adopted the "human wave" strategem when creating armies. :2thumbsup:

I used to play English a lot, so the two units I have the fondest memories of are Hobilars and Billmen. In terms of absolute stomping power, though, Lancers were where it was at. I also liked Pronai Allegion(SP?) due to their chortlesome nickname of 'Porno Cav'.
My least favourite? Templar Knights. They weren't bad, but it pissed me off that they didn't have lances purely so they could have a nice description image.

Longbows were a poetry in motion when I watch them in action. It's beautiful watching them decimate the calvary or whichever unit comes by.

Not played vanilla for a while so cant remember what i used to use but in XL its:
Regular Infantry: Armenian Infantry
Spears: Saracens
Missile Infantry: Longbow/Welsh/Sherwood (buy these in whenever i can, usually by slightly dodgy methods *cough*-ian switch*cough*)
Cavalry: Naxars
Missile Cavalry: Turcoman Horse

My favourite unit is the Italian Light Infantry. I relied on them in my English campaign. Mercenaries for the win!

All the chivalric units (knights,infantry,etc.).I usually ended up using armies based on them. I once conquered all of Europe using them. That's sad considering I was Poland (no disrespect to the polish intended).
Wind them up, watch them go: Huscarles, huscarles huscarles! :viking: Shame you couldn't keep training them into the later eras.
Highlanders/Gallowglasses are also up there. Cheap, disposable, fast, good in deserts. Great against missile-heavy armies and generally for causing confusion in enemy lines.

Wow, its been a while since I played MTW but for my money here are my A-list of units:
Missile: Longbowmen, although the Arbalesters are a close second the bowmen shoot faster and can shoot over your own units.
Cavalry: Royal Knights, led me to many victories in my English campaigns.
Infantry: Billmen, great in any hand to hand combat but can cut through Cavalry like a hot knife through butter.
Billmen and Longbows what can I say I'm a sucker for the English :D
Highlanders/Gallowglasses are also up there.I never really got anywhere with Highlanders, they never got the penetration/disruption that the Gallowglasses managed & consequently got slaughtered.
If I'd managed to actually get them into more battles, I'd have voted for or-garden Halberdiers but they were most of the time too slow to get into the thick of the fighting
I never really got anywhere with Highlanders, they never got the penetration/disruption that the Gallowglasses managed & consequently got slaughtered.
When playing as the Danes in early, I usually don't bother with missile troops (role-playing, real Vikings die face-to-face :2thumbsup: ). Instead, after taking Scotland, I would put up a screen of Highlanders in front of my viking types. Stretch them out 2 ranks deep, and run them towards the enemy archers and line, with the more burly guys behind. They could usually catch the archers just before they hit the enemy main line, and start messing with the whole formation. Then the northmen would come in behind and do the rest. Casualties were usually medium to high for the Highlanders, but they are cheap, it keeps down casualties from enemy archers, and the affect on the enemy formation was usually worth it. One of the best frontal-assault tactics I could come up with for SP. Doesn't work against missile-cav factions, of course, but for a generic archer/spear/sword/cav stack it works wonders.
Gallowglasses work even better, but taking Ireland and building it up takes time, while Scotland is on the way to France (through England, of course). ~;)
I like Highlanders alot; I've oft viewed them as a "poor man's" Ghazi Infantry. I concur that they're good at disrupting infantry formations and forcing archers to fight in melee (thus preventing them from firing their arrows). They're even better for flanking, however, provided you have the space to maneuver them to the enemy's sides and/or rear--their charge and attack abilities makes them ideal in this role.
My old roommate in particular swears by them, and we often engage in trash talk over his beloved Highlanders and my Ghazis. ~;)

I'm torn between Jinetes and Janissary Heavy Infantry.
Janissary Heavies made the Golden Horde something of a joke when playing as the Turks (I've never seen Mongol Heavy Cavalry die so fast) and they made for a very versatile unit in attack, defense or ambush.
However, despite the level of micromanagement needed to make them truly effective, Jinetes were an awesome all-round unit that retained their usefulness throughout all three eras and were cheap and easy to obtain - great light cavalry for desert campaigns against the infidel and deadly armour-piercing javelins for teaching upstart Catholic knights a thing or two.
Hashishim were also a bit of a giggle, but never quite as invisible as I'd have liked them to be.
Gallowglasses before they took them out of high and late periods.

I guess it depends on the faction you like to play with and on the game's version - I have different favourite units for the XL Mod and the Medmod than in Vanilla MTW or MTW VI. I am biased towards heavy cavalry, and I do not like the overly armoured extremely slow katanks and gothic knights, so I am going to say Avar Nobles and Mongol Heavies. The latter are obtainbale only through a bribe (unless you play a mod or change something in the startmap for late), which makes them only more desirable and coveted, for me at least.
Janissary Heavy Infantry in the Woods for 500 please.
Loved luring enemy troops into ambushes or simply into the woods to be sliced and diced by these guys. Cavalry was especially fun to dice up.

Cathapracts.
the same and me
the housecarls you could recruit in scandinavia in early; armored, reasonable defence, great morale and an almighty, armor-piercing punch. they chewed up royal knights pretty easily.
gallowglasses were great too.
Alan cavalry a´nd the hungarian horsearcher strelcy or however it is spellt.
Kalle
Oooh. Gallowglasses, Huscarles, Billmen. And didn't ... erm ... wasn't it Switzerland or somewhere round there that had some proper leet infantry?
-edit- Wasn't it Swiss Pikemen or something?
Vikings! (in regular MTW) playing Danes.
Step Cav playing Russian.
Annie
what, you really liked the steppe cav? I always thought they turned and ran as soon as anybody gave them a hard stare.. they did run really fast though, nice for pursuing routers.
Yes, but:
in MP: it is very fast harashing unit (of course, I upgraded it to valor 3 or 4).
in SP: hit and run and produce a big load of them so you could "refine" them to higher valor. Once having higher valor, it is hard to beat them even if you could catch them :)

I see, if theyre valoured-up to mounted sergeant levels of morale and fighting ability they would be very nice. I always tried to use them for flanking, figuring their mobility would be nice for getting them around the enemy line and into their rear, but once they got there they always seemed to get second toughts and remeber some other urgent things they had to do back home, even before the clobberin` started.

Feudal Men At Arms. Cheap, quick to get, good morale and capable of killing almost any early unit. They are extremly useful and valour has a huge effect as well.
The magic '4' armies I used to create:
4x Billmen
4x Chivalric Knights
4x CMAA
4x Longbowmen
Unstopppable conquering machine.
Except in the desert. :stupido2:

Varangian Gaurd!!
This is one tough choice for me, let's see...
I'll go with Janissary Heavy Infantry(JHI) in the very first place: You just won't find a better melee infantry in the whole game, and that includes Chivalric and Gohthic Foot knights, Swiss Armoured pikemen, Gallowglasses, Billmen and some other great sets of soldiers.
Some lack the speed(CFK, GFK and SAP), or the discipline (...pretty much all of catholic world, hehe), or have too much armour, making them lousy fighters in desert (again the foot knights + SAP). Fast, diciplines, excellent morale, completely slaughter cavalry, armour piercing attack....
Expensive as hell, but just gotta love them!
Now second is a though choice as well... damn, i'll just name a bunch of my favourites:
Sipahis of the Porte: good all around fighters (its very hard to kill one of these) and archers... too bad that the unit is so small (meh, i ended up modding this).
Longbowmen/Turcoman foot: The top archers of the game. Turcomans were almost immortals when in loose formation
Viking Huscarles : The downside of this unit was that i was too afraid of using them in later eras (because there was no replacement)
Steppe Heavy cavalry : I was amazaed for how versatile these little guys were: decent missile troops + close combat + easy to get
Gallowglasses : a must have for any christian army: they kinda fill the role ghazis have in the muslim world
Bedouin camels: Oh!, the pleasant surprise of wathcing these guys rout crusader knights has no price...
There are some more... but i'll leave it here
Varangian Guard with all upgrades, just churn up anything that gets in their way.
Pronaoi Allagion rocked also. (can't spell)
