In the last two versions of EB the number and quality and buildability of siege engines like ballistae and Catapults and onagers has been really poor. Will this be at all improved in .8?

Please say yes.

Awesome, how many factions will they be available for?

i have an idea, and a question...
is it possible to add scorpions and catapultas, not as units, but as siege equipment like rams, siege ladders, and such? it would make much more sense to put one of the normal units using them, oposite to having one recruited unit, ocupying the small space your armies have...it would rock...and if it was possible to restrict it's building to post reform it would rock...it just doesn't feel nice to have them being part of my armies...20 units of soldiers is sometimes not enough IMO, so much with this siege units...

Ohh, I like the idea of building them on site. Makes more sense than trying to pull a huge onager halfway across the world through mountain passes and such. :) Were the larger siege engines even, historically, something that could be moved such long distances? I have a feeling this is something hardcoded though.

if it was possible it would be ahistorical...cuz the roman, who are renown by their use of siege equipment didn't mastered the building of this devices in the begining of EB timframe..at first most of the siege weapons romans used, were confiscated from the cities and ppl's they conquered, and this was until the marian reforms..until then pretty much all the siege weapons the romans posseced were taken from the greek nations, who had tradition with this devices...yes, Rome at the begining stealed them, and kept them very well hidden as treasures, so they wouldn't be damaged, using them only when needed....it's stupid for rome the almighty potence, to not have them developed at first, but it was so...

but altough i love realism in my games, having to recruit, siege equipment is stupid...well to recruit siege engineers might be fun, if only they could use siege equipment, but that is not so in RTW...but not the equipment it self

I would like to see use of earthen siegeworks--ramps, ditches, mounds, in the game but know this is probably impossible. It seems they would have added this since it was such a huge feature of siegecraft in the time frame.

Perhaps a Engineer unit could be modded in, most likely hardcoded.

yes the ideal would be to emulate the siege engeniers of stronghold(so many hours i played....=)) but alas i don't think it will ever be possible...i would be glad to be able to make balistas and other engines, like i make batters or ladders of doom.....

This was THE feature of Roman siege warfare of the period.
As well as building walls around cities, "Periteichismos" which the Greek used first in 430s BC. A method the Romans later used under Caesar at Alesia, called "CIRCVMVNITTVS" in latin.

Unfortunately this cannot be done as far as I know.
Maybe in Medieval 2, who knows?

I'm optimistic it'll be possible somewhere in the future.
Hey, I'm a patient guy.

hadn't there been talk about changing the model for sapping towers to make them look like earthworks or palisades of some sort? did anyone ever attempt this? that would be a truly wonderful development, and would really put the mod that pulled it off on the map. finding a way to make siege engines buildable in the siege menu would be pretty danged cool too. here's to hoping...

anyone knows if onagers in the hands of the romans in EB would be histoicaly correct? i just found a delicous model of a onager in the Chialvry mod... thinking on adding it to my EB install....but afraid it will look a bit too much out of place....

In Chilvary the probably needed a Trebuchet style catapult, and only could find the Onager.

Shouldn't the romans have giant rock flinging "ballista" instead of onagers anyways?

So would I, true proper historical warfare, lovley! Shame it can't be done, but like Shigawire says it might be done in M2 simply because eathen seige style was no different in the Middle Age than it was in Classical Age!
Lovley how things never change!

nice...adding it now, and retexting later....then ill make it a litlle weaker than the ballistae, and less acurate....and make it available one barrack early to the ballistae, and restrict their recruitment to places where taxeis hoplitiai can be recruited(greek places)...

Onagers are a problem in our timeframe. They start to appear in sources from 2nd c AD but there some scattered pieces of evidence that may indicate theyre usage earlier. But this is very unlikely that they were used in RTW/EB timeframe(3-1 c BC).

in my install they are not available at the start...only in higher barrack levels....making them appear at more later dates...
i've gotten Chivalry catapult into EB, but im having some problems....

anyone might know what i might have done wrong? or is it a problem of the model?
i tried chivalry, but never played enough to be able to field this siege equipment so i don't know if it's problem from the model....sorry for the poor excuse for a reskin...im trying to improve it...
anyone?
