So, I was reading some stuff posted over here, and I saw a lotta hate for the phalanx formation, mainly because it seemed like it didn't work. So I go and play some battles using them, and I now think that anyone who hates them, is crazy.

An army half the size of the enemy, can inflict MASSIVE defensive damage, and in one game only take one casuality? Thats what I call great.

I just back myself into a corner to try to cut back on the space for an enemy flank, run four archers in the back, and then sit and was the fun.

Does no one else think this way?

Phalanx is great if you can guarentee you won't be flanked. Once Broken they're just a bunch of guys with really long sticks. Use some light cav to defend against flanking and you're golden. My Best use for Phalanx was Merc Hoplites in a city defense. I knew they'd break the wall down. But I positioned Merc Hoplites at the door. They charged it with Cav and Chariots. They got massacred. My infantry protected the walls and that was it. Easy victory.

I'd say the hatred for phalanxes doesn't have much to do with their usefulness, more with the inability of the AI to handle them, or face them.

Also, they used to do the phalanx shuffle, which was eliminated ina later patch iirc, but it used to be annoying as hell, mostly because it looked pretty dumb

IMO, the problems with using phalanxes is that they often won't stay in formation, or change to their swords without reason.

For me though, it's their limited effectivity in offensive battles. If you're like me who leaves the battle timer on, the phalanxes sloooooow movement rate will definitely bug you... And once they move, they're even more prone to flanking attacks.

The problem with the phalanx formation is, if the enemy attaks you and the phalanx entry in hand-to-hand attack, they leave the pikes and they take the sword, this makes vulnerable the hoplites.
Other problem is being attaked by much cavalry at the same time. The hoplites can attack but they cannot kill all.

But...

They can kill masses of infantry soldies, without no loses.

like lord phan said, if you can garuntee they wont be flanked, theyre great. but if your on the offensive, they can be a pain. first they move incredibly slowly, so when they reach the enemy, you yourself are asleep. and when they are on the move, they are extemely easy to flank. and if you have a line of phalanxs, and there are spaces inbetween them, even if you have the flanks protected, then enemy can get through and thus can attack in the rear. they are terrible with their swords, do not rely on them to take walls. even though all the bad stuff ive noted about them, they are still one of my fav units to fight against and with.
