I just got an original, red box version of Shogun and I'm going through the newbie motions. Now, since I'm a guy who started with Rome, much of the game seems alien to me. Are there any good game guides that anyone knows of?
Appreciate it...

LOL!
Thanks, Sasaki. That's one of the funniest damn things I've seen all month! (I honestly just about fell out of my chair from laughing so hard.) :laugh4: :laugh4: :laugh4:
@Reenk RoinkCongratulations on getting Shogun! You're in for a treat. ~

I hope you enjoy it Reenk.
Make sure you get all the patches. STW was notorious for the AI's "suicide daimyo" - charging into battle ahead of all his troops and dying. Which means clans got eliminated early and you end up fighting rebels instead of clans. The patches help that a little. Also, don't stack a heir with your daimyo. I recall that your heirs disappeared in some situation when stacked with "dad".
Let us know what your impressions are after you've had a chance to play it some.

Appreciate it... I'll like to read your first campaign as well (with screenshots).
(yeah don't forget to patch, there's a bug where routing troops get a charge bonus).
Good choice to spend your money on!:2thumbsup:
Have fun playing, and for any questions ask here!

Thanks for the guides highlanddave, they were very helpful.
I'll patch it up and probably start a story soon, now which faction do you guys recommend to start with? I tried Hojo around for a bit, but blew my money really fast...

Hojo is the richest clan ~D
Hojo is the richest clan ~D
Uesugi is a very close second, though! Even if they lose Shinano right away (which they often do in my experience), they still rake in a lot of cash. In addition, they quite possibly have the most defensible position in the game, so they don't need to spend as much money on their armies. I actually find them to be easier than the Hojo.

Oda has the highest starting income actually. I just said hojo because it's funnier that Reenk ran out of cash right away. Although Hojo does border mutsu, echigo, sagami, and Kai all very rich provinces so they are effectively richer.

I started my first game as Uesugi. Played defence most of the time, Hojo backstabbed me early on, but I haven't lost any provinces (although that took some planning and luck) and am concentrating on building up the economy, upkeep costs seemed rather high, but I might have misunderstood the system ~. I managed to take two Hojo provinces (the rich one bordering the main Uesugi territory and another one), the Hojo currently hold very little territory but they do have a large stack near me, also, one of the other clans is trying to take my most inland province :help:
BTW does the AI get better buildings ? The Hojo seem to have some nice advanced buildings in their main territory, whilst I just have tier 1 stuff (and lots of mines !).

I'd forgotten about the Oda, but you're quite right about them having the biggest income. I just don't think of them as being rich, though, since they also start out with so much more territory than the other clans (and therefore have theoretically higher army upkeep costs). Perhaps it would be more accurate if I said that Hojo and Uesugi have the best income per capita(?).

I don't think so, at least not on Easy and Normal. I only rarely play on Hard, however, and I've never played Expert, so the AI might very well get bonuses at those levels. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Hojo *does* pull down a very decent income, so they can more easily afford to quickly upgrade their infrastructure.

Different clans have different campaign AI...I think hojo is set to train ashigaru for soldiers and make lots of buildings.

Great Post HighlandDave, ~
I came to TW through MTW. Just bought Eras and decided to give STW a try. I thought I had seen FrogBeastEgg's guide but couldn't find it. Started a Hojo campaign and got my A$$ kicked twice on normal. FrogBeastEgg's guide is priceless. :frog:
I think this should be stickied for Newbies.

Very good game you got there. That was the first TW I played and it surely is very fun. I beat it with Shimizu first I think. For some reason I thought they're the best. I also like the idea of playing a Christian Daimyo.
Hey patches. Where are the patches? I hated all my enemies dying off right away in the beginning. Got very dull quickly like that:wall:
Also, don't stack a heir with your daimyo. I recall that your heirs disappeared in some situation when stacked with "dad".Ah! I thought I ended up short one of my boys... that explains a lot ~:)
On a slightly related topic, I was taking a peek at the various .wmv files in my Shogun directory, and alongside the announcement that you've had a son, there's also another file which announces the birth of a daughter. I only started STW recently and have only finished one campaign, but either Mrs Shimazu only bore me sons, or my vizier didn't see fit to tell me about any girls ~:yin-yang:

I got the eras package about a month or so ago. Where can I get the patches for Shogun and which one(s) do I need?
Errr... Sorry if I'm kinda piggybacking here.

There are a number of features that didn't make it into the final version of the game. There are traces and hints of them in a few of the folders and in some of the files.
Derfasciti, your Eras version should have all the patches. Reenk bought the original red box which has none of the patches, hence the reminder to him to fetch the patches.

Actually, yesterday I bought the STW Gold Edition, which I assume is the same thing they put in the Eras box, and it displays the version number as 1.00, so I guess I'll need to patch it after all, right? I take it the one I need is 1.12? Just a bit confused as I've seen people on the official boards mention a 1.02 as well.

You may be right Sardo, but it doesn't make any sense that they wouldn't include the patched version since the patches had been out for years. I guess dumber things have happened. :dizzy2:
The red box STW needs the v1.12 patch. The Warlords Edition (STW/MI) needs the v1.02 patch. The STW Gold Edition and the one in Eras collection are STW/MI, but don't need patching eventhough they indicate v1.0. If you want to play STW/MI with the red box STW v1.12 unit stats check this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=61917).

The game also completely crashes after trying to patch it I believe. (Gold edition)

As Puzz pointed out, Shogun Gold Edition doesn't require any patch. So if you tried to patch it, that could very well be the problem.

Oh it is, I just thought I mention it. It seems to have caused some confusion:
You don't need to patch the gold edition, and shouldn't try !

I bought Shogun yesterday for the amazing price of 50 cents! (used to be a rental from my library) I played before but that was years back and damn it's hard! I tried a few campaigns on hard and got my ass kicked. I remember why this game was so good. No gold amour/sword JHI to slaughter some lowlife peasants. Everything comes down to skill and a bit of luck. Oh and those hilarious movies of course :2thumbsup:
Good to see you're enjoying the game, MuseRulez! ~

Yeah, even though it sucks when my ninjas fail their missions, I often still laugh at watching them bumble around when they goof up. :laugh4:
First of all, Welcome to the .org!! Enjoy! :balloon2: (ben trouwens ook nederlander, hehe ~)

Amazing indeed.. just 50 cents... It's such a nice/cool/good game. The greatest thing about it is just the strategical aspect. It's the most strategic game I've ever seen/played. It is unmatched by RTW.. don't know about MTW, I can't compair them because I don't have MTW :(
Well.. if you're having difficulties, tell us here more precisely which... After years of playing the game, we'll probably we able to give you some tips here and there. ~:) :egypt:
Good luck, and enjoy! ~:)
