View Full Version : Province's ability to produce certain units just disappears!?

Anyone encounter this error in MTW?
I have a province for example that can (or should be able to) produce pavisse crossbow men:
- it has a bowyers guild
- it has produced pavisse crossbowmen before
- it has never been attacked
- I haven't manually destroyed any buildings
The same thing happened in another province with caravels and strangely although caravels no longer appear in that province's unit menu, the caravels I already placed in the work queue at least appear there. Doesn't make any sense.

I have installed patch 1.1

Any thoughts, I was enjoying the game until now.

Maybe try installing a more up to date patch? I've never had that happen to me before.

Very strange! Never seen it myself -- have you tried reloading a saved game and replaying the period when it happened? Do the building description info parchments still show the units you can't train when you do a right-click on the building?

It might be possible that your unitprod file has got corrupted somehow. Does the problem show in EVERY province with these training facilities or just some of them?

Wierd....

Well, tonight I'll try reloading a saved game prior to the bug appearing and see what happens. I hope that's not my only option 'cause I just put down a Crusade and the Pope-inator with it. Hate to do that all over again. The building description info parchements don't mention anything about the units that I should be able to train. The problem seems to have taken hold randomnly. Meaning it hasn't happened in every province, just some - provinces that I know haven't been attacked or lost their facilities somehow. I can actually still SEE the facilities. But when the error does occur in a province, then the condition stays for subsequent turns, it never goes away. I hope I don't have to bite the bullet by destroying the facilities and rebuilding them.
Question: I though that ver 1.1 was the most up to date patch. Is there another? If there is, anybody got a weblink to it? 1.1 was all I noticed on TW's sight.

1.1 is the most up-to-date patch for plain Medieval. If you have VI installed, you should use 2.01.

Well, installing VI isn't an option since it gives a message that it will be incompatible with previous MTW saves. There is no other patch for MTW besides 1.1. Removing the patch by reinstalling MTW doesn't work because it crashes once I attempt to load the saved games. Reinstalling 1.1 brings me right back where I started. I have no earlier saved game files that don't include this error. I even destroyed the bowers guild then rebuilt the bowyer and bowyer workshop. By the time the workshop was complete I should have the ability to make at least crossbows, but they don't appear in the menu.

One theory I got is that the game may now be enforcing some sort of invention timeline. I installed 1.1 midway through my campaign. Perhaps 1.1 wont let me build units that in history may not have been invented yet? The year is 1181. Maybe Pavisse Crossbows and Caravels weren't available then. But then why even allow me to build those facilities? I don't know, I'm guessing. I didn't see any mention of such a timeline in the patch's readme file.

This really sucks.

Perhaps the 1.1 patch is also not really compatible with your old save games?
Just a guess...not sure.
Why don't you patch up and start over, it's fun.

You Say the year is 1181, yet you have access to pavise crossbows.....

As I recall, you have to wait until 1205 for those units beeing available....

Feudal forces available from 1087.
Chivalric forces available from 1205
Gothic forces available from 1321 (i think) can“t recall the exact year.

Don't certain units also become obsolete as the game progresses?

That's probably it. The unpatched version of M:TW contained a bug that allowed the player to construct units of all era's.

True. Some units will disappear after a certain date. For example you cannot recruit Varangians any more in the Late era.

I guess they ran out of Vikings - I don't think they can be recruited in High (maybe Late). Shame really.

So you have VI but you haven't installed it?

You've basically corrupted your saves by installing v1.1 half way through a campaign, then saving again since this time. Trying to go back to v1.0 loading a v1.1 save will obviously cause a crash and/or other problems.

V1.0 allowed everything to be built regardless of the time period. v1.1 imposed the era restrictions correctly.

I'm not totally sure what you're stressing over though? Your best bet is to delete all of your save games, abandon the campaign and put it all down to experience. Then either:

a) Reinstall MTW and, immediately, the v1.1 patch.
b) Install VI over the installation and, if necessary, the v2.01 patch (if you have VI that is).

Problem solved, everyone thanks for the input. I had installed patch 1.1 after having started the campaign. Hey , I was itching to play and jumped the gun, shoot me. 1.1 enforces a timeline. After installing 1.1 any facilities already built for something like Pavisse Crossbows will still be present, they just won't actually work.

Again, thanks.

And oh yeah:

Glad to hear it's all sorted out! The game allows you to build useless buildings (if you build them that's your own fault!) but something like the Bowyer's Guild is required to build other archery buildings up to the Master Bowyer (giving a valour bonus and allowing other unit types that still might be available to be trained).

But a question arising from this: Do Crossbows (and / or Pav X-bows) ever become obsolete? I know that historically their use by Christians against other Christians was outlawed, but I think they're all still available in Late period, no?

Yes, they are still available. The prohibition you cite dates from the early middle ages, and I doubt many generals cared, as the Pope proceeded to equip his own guard with crossbows.
