View Full Version : how big are the unit sizes
I wonder, if the size of battles will be similar to Rome, cuz I remember on huge settings, you get 160 guys with most standard unit types. which means you get about 3000 men on your side. I was looking through the previews, and a lot of units had sizes of 48 (for guys on foot), and 32 (for guys on horses), well, what does that translate to in terms of huge settings, does anyone know? Also, can you build up the guilds? (like, minor chapter house of templars to grand chapter house of templars?) Seems like all Catholic factions will be able to recruit templars and hospitallers, which is good.

You can build up guilds but I believe that getting the higher levels of build requires you to beat everyone else to it since there can only be one grand master guild. As for unit sizes, given that CA has not categorically said that there will be larger armies, and that one would expect them not to reduce the size of armies, I would be surprised if they are not essentially the same as in RTW.

With those system requirements, I hope they wont be too large.
The unit sizes will be adjustable. They have been for every other TW game. Why remove that option now?
Any how using the RTW formula.
The standard sizes are,
60
48
32
16
Large would them be,
120
96
64
32
Huge,
240
192
128
64
Oh and small would be,
30
24
16
8

In some screenshots there are 200 man infantry units.

They have changed them back to the MTW sizes I believe. But I could be wrong.

I don't think unit sizes will go up in multiplications of two. I think they will increase by the standard unit size, i.e. the biggest units like spearmen will be 60, 120, 180 and 240. I say this because there are screenshots of 60 man units of peasants, and of 180 man units of peasants. So units will probably be
16-32-48-64
24-48-72-96
32-64-96-128
48-96-144-192
50-100-150-200
60-120-180-240
All taken this means that while the largest possible size of an army will remain the same, on average one will probably be fighting larger battles since the size of most infantry units on the largest setting will be 192 men, while cavalry will be 128.

well this whole 40-32 thing aint goin to work for me at all, big units for me:laugh4:
So that's the problem with nobility, peasants have bigger unit sizes.
I love huge settings and may play a few battles on smallest with the best settings my CPU can handle, but like all games the eye candy isn't as big of a factor as I'll sacrifice graphics for more men on the field.
I guess it'll be the same as in rome. By default they aren't going to be huge, but if you and your comp can handle it, you can set them to huge.
That's what I love for example about the Age of Empires II... A simple RTS, designed for armies of about 30... but as computers got better and better, today you can play AoE II with big armies, almost like in Cossacks. That's why the game doesn't grow old for me.

ca hinted that MTW unit sizes were back, on the standard setting that means:
siege weapons 12
family members 20
cavalry 40
dismounted knights 40
archers 60
infantry 60
spears, peasants, skirmishers 100
double the numbers for "huge"

If you look at screenshots it's pretty clear those are not the unit sizes.
but the screens say unit: 32, or something like that though.
I don't think there will be tens of thousands of soldiers fighting, probably more like 2500 on each side, not counting reinforcements. That's enough of a strain on most pc already.
I want 400 strong units :juggle2:
