So there I am having to defend my provence against an ill considered attack by those idiot Byzantines. I have a 3 star general with 6 valour I believe, some more knights and a few other units. Expecting a win - though not without casualties I start the battle and position my troops. Now before the battle starts, I like to press F1 and look at all the unit stats. Imagine my surprise when my general had 11 valour and 32 morale!

I couldn't understand it. The general didn't appear to have any battle bonuses prior to the battle as the very same turn I had examined his stack as the other knight unit had received the pride trait. Well not to look a gift horse in the mouth, I used this super-strong unit to utterly destroy the enemy force and to send the Byzantines packing.
After the battle the general received a +1 defense bonus, plus +1 dread due to the fact I decided to kill all those smelly Byzantines I'd captured. It was then I noted his unit's valour was now only 4, despite not losing any troops and killing about 200. I'm sure pre-battle his unit had 6 valour as he was one of the few decent units I had left in that part of the world.
Two turns later, the Byzantines attack again. This time the unit has 6 valour. That's +2 on his pre-battle stats. I'm not sure if the extra +1 command bonus for defending was responsible.

But what I really want to know is - how did I ever get a super unit for one battle? And please can I have him back?! I have a 8,000+ strong Pope army to deal with and absolutely no money whatsoever!

I just looked at the logfiles for the battles in the question, and it seems my Super unit started the battle with 5 valour per man, and ended with 5 valour. But after that battle and during the next one, the game says every man in the unit had only 2 valour to start. Crazy!
