But, of all of it, you can find me listening to black music the most, and of that hiphop.
Got too many favorite artists to go and list. That'll find me editing this post with the peeps I forgot for the next two hours ~;)

I like many kinds of music, tolerate most and can't stand a select few. However, my favourite has to be the centuries of music that is called Classical, then some Jazz (Cole Porter, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee etc.), a bit of Bossa Nova and some Soul music (Barry White, for instance), not forgetting a whole host of military music.

Jimmy Paige sucks. :hide:
Actually, I think you should have mentioned Stevie Ray Vagaun instead. Or Gregg Allman. Or Jorma Kaukonen. Or John Fogerty. Or David Gilmour. And I'm not even a big fan of David Gilmour, but I think he's better than Jimmy Paige. (He can sing better, anyhow. He doesn't sing like he has his balls in a vice.)

Girly Techno (like Cascada)
Weird Al, particularly his polka remixes
Ska in general, Five Iron Frenzy for #1.
There are lots of songs that I like from artists I don't really listen to otherwise. For instance, "Doubleback" by ZZ Top, because it was in Back to the Future. But I don't listen to ZZ top otherwise.
I like rock&roll, 70s pop, and country, and early rap

What's with all this hip hop bashing? Just because what you see on TV or hear on the radio, that doesnt mean that what's hip hop really is.
Hip Hop itself has a deeper history than most ppl really think.
For 1 thing, it is not rap. I'd like to quote one famous hip hop artist, KRS-One:
"Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live"
Its composed of 4 elements, breakdancing, graffiti art, emceeing (or commonly known as rapping) and turntablism (or DJing).
Essentially Hip Hop is beyong the bravado and macho postering, money, drugs and objectification of women. Thats the major label corporations fault for endorsing that negative image for Hip Hop.
Hip Hop is for expression of one's feelings, or to talk about society or the world.
Originally, it was used to escape the violence of the streets and the sorrow, but sadly Hip Hop is reciprocatinf back to what it tried to escape from.
You want real Hip Hop, listen to Blackstar, KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest,
De La Soul, k-os, etc.
An FYI, there are many aspects of hip Hop, just like the art of Painting has many styles. There are socio-political artists, poetry in general or just straight emceeing.
There's just too many to name and too much to get into.
So before you start bashing other people's beloved music, please do the research and look into the history of it, not just ranting about this or that, cause thats just plain ignorance. And we don't want an ignorant world, do we?
This is the 21st century, not the Dark Age
I generally have a fond admiration for hip hop, but I do like any kind of music,
Khaled (great artist of World music),
james Blunt,
Thelonius Monk and other Jazz artists,
System of a Down,
Rage Against the Machine (Rock/Rap + Socio/Political Talk = Total Ownage),
Atmosphere,
Brother Ali,
K-os,
Classified,
BlackStar,
Mathematik,
Canibus,
The Fugees,
Wu-tang Clan,
Theivery Corporation (great ambient/electronica music),
DL Incognito,

GoTan Project (ahh, Parisian accordians with hip hop/tango beats)
MF Doom,
Dilated Peoples,
Just to name a few, theres alot more!

Why are so many people's rock lists full of old artists?
ELITEofWARMANGINGERYBREADMEN88

Listenning to Wrestlers Theme Music isn't Bad ehiter, IMO..
Why are so many people's rock lists full of old artists?
Because old music is plain great without any gimmicks.
Case in point (should have in What are you listening to thread), this classic song:
"I Don't Want To Talk About It (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZFcbBnnsEY)" - Rod Stewart.
The nervous sexy chick flubbed it a bit, but an excellent version nonetheless :smash:
Because old music is plain great without any gimmicks.
Of course, don't get me wrong. Dylan, Springsteen, Harrison, Lowell George, Entwistle are all my heroes. But there are great bands playing now : Wu, Umphrey's, Truckers, Ekoostik Hookah...why do we gotta rely on past generation's music?
Of course, don't get me wrong. Dylan, Springsteen, Harrison, Lowell George, Entwistle are all my heroes. But there are great bands playing now : Wu, Umphrey's, Truckers, Ekoostik Hookah...why do we gotta rely on past generation's music?
IMO, it's stronger songwriting, better musicianship and its influence on current music.
For example, some old bands sound dated because they stopped influencing newer bands. However, a lot of old bands sound fresh because they continue to influence the new crop.
Why are so many people's rock lists full of old artists?
Because they contain that raw sound that newer bands just can't maintain, sustain or in some cases even create.
Because they contain that raw sound that newer bands just can't maintain, sustain or in some cases even create.
But that's just false. Can you honestly say that the Truckers, Wu, and the Peacemakers don't have a raw sound (especially live). Hell Patterson Hood (lead singer for DBT) is known for collapsing on stage in a fit of bad ass musical passion. Sure bands for middle schoolers are slick but when weren't they?
AntiochusIII
11-08-2006, 06:32
It justifies the ego, a.k.a. I'm superior musically 'cause I'm above the mainstream. ~:pimp:
You guys can't deny it. Don't even try. ~;)
____________________________________
For some reason I despise the mainstream 80's crap and their pathetic pretenses of "rocking" and "banging," not to mention their terrible fashion which makes me cringe just about everytime I catch a slightly older movie or music video with a girl who wears Jean shirts and whose hair apparently is a disastrous consequence of civilization gone backwards. Also, I find myself repulsed by the mainstream of today's hip hop, which increasingly feels like a soulless machine whose only maintenance is based on repetition alone, and whose negatives are endless, ranging from offensively low-intelligence lyrics to generic voices.
I used to be a true trogolyte rap-and-hip hop-hater, but has come to admit that there's crap in everything and there's gold in everything. With every Beatles comes a thousand crappy imitators, or more; millions more.
Not to mention really cool hip hop lyrics can really exudes your social awareness meter, reminiscent of what the glorious John Lennon, Bob Dylan, among others, used to incorporate society into their songs. Boy, wasn't the hip hop during Crash's ending credits (the last one) fun!
[/rants off]
Otherwise, I'm receptive to most. Quite frankly, this is actually the start of my personal musical renaissance -- and, to my tongue-in-cheek horror, I realized I actually liked emo music long before I even pretend to possess a musical taste! Linkin Park, Evanescence...
JimBob I wasn't referring to those bands, I was referring to the very mainstream bands.
Drive-By Truckers are decent. However, they seem to lack something. Its not whole, its not a full glass. Their too bland, just feels ordinary.
By the Peacemakers, I assume you mean Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers. Likewise, good for a mellow mood, but not enough ompf for me.
Ekoostik Hookah are uhh, odd to say the least, some good stuff. BUT way to much country influence in it for me.
Umphrey's McGee, good jams. However, its a bit to random sometimes, no real flow.
The Big Wu, :inquisitive: serious? Its way too white (if you understand what I mean) for my tastes.
The Wizard
11-08-2006, 15:24
I'm sure Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page would agree that everyone from everywhere can make great music.
I suppose, but then Jimmy Page was merely building on top of a foundation (or rather, IMO, a rather elaborate construction) already laid by black people decades before (note: I'm a big Led Zepp fan, mind). Nobody has had such a profound impact upon modern Western music as black people.
But I'll let it slide, since you're the boss.
So now I'll try to list some of my favorite artists. Awaiting edits (~;)):
Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth ("Carmel City" is a track on their album, The Main Ingredient)
De La Soul
Gang Starr
Immortal Technique
Jedi Mind Tricks
Biz Markie
Chubb Rock
Jeru the Damaja (only the first two albums, Premier-produced)
OutKast
Goodie Mob
Nas (Illmatic)
Mobb Deep (The Infamous...)
Notorious B.I.G.
A Tribe Called Quest
Jungle Brothers
Big Daddy Kane
Scribe
k-os
Heavy D & The Boyz
Ice-T
Pete Philly & Perquisite
The Roots
(Eric B. &) Rakim
Wu-Tang Clan
Kool G. Rap (& DJ Polo)
I've probably forgotten legion of MCs who aren't on my iPod as of now. And I don't much like KRS-One, for some strange reason...
So that concludes hip hop. Onwards:
Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Parliament Funkadelic
The Whispers
Oliver Cheatham
James Brown
Barry White
Marvin Gaye
Aretha Franklin
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Sonny Rollins
Buena Vista Social Club
Celia Cruz (¡Azúcar! ~D)
Miami Sound Machine (Dr. Beat ~;))
Juan Luis Guerra (& 4.40)
Juanes
Claudius Philips & OREO
Immorales
Luny Tunes
Zion y Lennox
Hector y Tito
Don Omar
Phew! That was it. For now ~:pimp:
Also, I find myself repulsed by the mainstream of today's hip hop, which increasingly feels like a soulless machine whose only maintenance is based on repetition alone, and whose negatives are endless, ranging from offensively low-intelligence lyrics to generic voices.
Word up. They took up the lyrical simplicity (boo!) of characters such as Snoop Dogg or Eazy-E, and then tried to imitate Mobb Deep (The Infamous...) and Raekwon (Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...) -- but they couldn't handle it. Result: 50 Cent. And why did Jay-Z squander his lyrical ability on the bling-bling era?
IrishArmenian

Why are so many people's rock lists full of old artists?
Because:
A) The 'raw power' is largely undiscovered by Orgahs here. See: Tiger Army, Flogginy Molly, Dropkick Murphys and many more.
B) The sound recording is bad, in a good way. Biggest examples I can think of is Iggy and the Stooges on the album Raw Power--Search and Destroy has a lot of dead air that is taken up by the feedback and the guitar sounds like it is played on an Amplifier witha fuzz setting but that is just the sound quality. Also, Social Distortion's Mommy's Little Monster and Mainliner. Both great albums from my favorite band, yet Mainliner is not a bonafide studio recorded album. It is all recorded in basements and such.
C) I don't think old music is better, I just think 95% of the real talent today is undiscovered.

Why are so many people's rock lists full of old artists?
Because 60's music was the only music ever made -- EVER -- that was made not just for sound alone, but with conscious thought given to how this sound would affect the listener's visual and tactile senses. Since I have Tourette's Syndrome, my head does not work entirely normally; with one effect being that I can "see" and "feel" the shape and texture of music. I have had this wierd sense for as long as I can remember, and it is quite entertaining. Without fail, the only music that has a conscious feel and texture is 60's psychedelia; everything else feels too haphazard and random to me.
I'm in a grind band. I listen to metal and grind with a few exceptions. A list would be terribly long and a waste of time.

Think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head there! The current wave of indie-pop seems to be focused on bland, overproduced sounds. It makes the music dull! (see The Killers' and Razorlight's new album's for the best examples i can think of)
Seeing Less Than Jake & Dropkick Murphies on they're joint tour next week! ~D :thrasher: :charge:

That concert would be invredibly great. Mind-blowing even. Dropkick, don't know about Less Than Jake, has a ton of energy in live shows.
I suppose, but then Jimmy Page was merely building on top of a foundation (or rather, IMO, a rather elaborate construction) already laid by black people decades before (note: I'm a big Led Zepp fan, mind). Nobody has had such a profound impact upon modern Western music as black people.
But I'll let it slide, since you're the boss.
So now I'll try to list some of my favorite artists. Awaiting edits (~;)):
Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth ("Carmel City" is a track on their album, The Main Ingredient)
De La Soul
Gang Starr
Immortal Technique
Jedi Mind Tricks
Biz Markie
Chubb Rock
Jeru the Damaja (only the first two albums, Premier-produced)
OutKast
Goodie Mob
Nas (Illmatic)
Mobb Deep (The Infamous...)
Notorious B.I.G.
A Tribe Called Quest
Jungle Brothers
Big Daddy Kane
Scribe
k-os
Heavy D & The Boyz
Ice-T
Pete Philly & Perquisite
The Roots
(Eric B. &) Rakim
Wu-Tang Clan
Kool G. Rap (& DJ Polo)
I've probably forgotten legion of MCs who aren't on my iPod as of now. And I don't much like KRS-One, for some strange reason...
So that concludes hip hop. Onwards:
Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Parliament Funkadelic
The Whispers
Oliver Cheatham
James Brown
Barry White
Marvin Gaye
Aretha Franklin
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Sonny Rollins
Buena Vista Social Club
Celia Cruz (¡Azúcar! ~D)
Miami Sound Machine (Dr. Beat ~;))
Juan Luis Guerra (& 4.40)
Juanes
Claudius Philips & OREO
Immorales
Luny Tunes
Zion y Lennox
Hector y Tito
Don Omar
Phew! That was it. For now ~:pimp:
Yes, a thoroughly great list of artists ~
I like your style.
Scribes pretty nice, his a talented emcee from New Zealand.
Jedi Mind is pretty good, but I perferred the lyrics of Vinnie Paz in their first album, the bio-socio-chem-elec-magnetic manipulation of human consciousness instead of his hate filled and very simplistic lyrics of neaderthal brutishness. But Stoupe on the other hand, brilliant producer, ever listen to his productions on Canibus' Rip the Jacker album. :2thumbsup:
Immortal tech, De La, ATCQ, Eric B n Rakim, Nas (his still nice tho), k-os (mos definitely), WUTANG CLAN!, Roots, and so on and so forth, are all great additions to a music list.
You listen to Tupac Shakur, Dilated Peoples and Atmosphere?
And Jimi hendrix, Barry White and Marvin Gaye...
Its like ... ~
Listen to the music, and you will see.
Enough said.

Best gig EVER!
I felt like i was going to die! :laugh4:
Got up on stage during The Spicy McHaggis Jig then had to fight my way back into the crowd for Less Than Jake (greatest live band ever! 2nd time ive seen them this year)
If you get a chance to see either of these bands i recommend you take it, if you get a chance to see both at the same gig in a 1500 capacity venue then fight tooth and nail for tickets!

I'm thinking of doing something with grindcore too. Mainly a solo project, not really a band. I would use noise to fill the background.
Grind is too much fun not to play. There are a lot of grind/noise and grind/faeces-core bands out there, I'm sure there'd be a scene for you if you were to put something out. If it's offensive enough, we should do a split.
Best gig EVER!

Ah that's nice to hear. Less Than Jake I'll probably go see them this summer in the Warped Tour. Should be fun

Entombed
Dream Theater
Faith No More
Hypocrisy
Metallica
Moonspell
Nirvana
Nothing
Porcupine Tree
Sculptured
Ulver
^ man, i only recognized 3 of those bands. Pantera, Nirvana, and Metallica. If you want something really heavy, try to find the video for the new Celtic Frost album. That thing is so dark and depressing you become suicidal and satanic just listening to it. Those guys are twisted.
Anyway, I am a Grunge fan, but the new grunge sucks. I'm old school grunge man, noe of this new poser stuff. original early 90's all the way
Nirvana (overrated)
Pearl Jam (too political now)
Soundgarden (Superunknown is a grunge anthem)
Screaming Trees (I'm tired of writing comments for each one)
Temple of the Dogs (Eddie Vedder's debut and one of Grunge's greatest albums)
Mudhoney (Why do I keep writing comments?)
Stone Temple Pilots (Forget this new Velvet Revovler stuff)
Alice in Chains (Layne Staley has the most incredible voice)
Hole (Just kidding they suck. But that's Courtney Love for ya')
The new Celtic Frost album is garbage. Worst comeback ever.
^how were the others? I never heard them. I saw the video on mtv.com and my dad said he remembered them as being too depressing for him to listen to. He liked the more punkish Descendants and Dead Kennedy's.

I've heard its good from people whos judgement I trust, although i've never heard much of anything by them. I may check it out in time.
The first two full-lengths are classics. You guys must be new to the scene.

Meh, Vinnie Paz is still pretty good. It's pretty sickly aggressive at times, true, and inferior to the likes of, say, a Mr. Lif or an Immortal Technique, but he busts out a real good piece of lyricism every track or so on average.
You listen to Tupac Shakur, Dilated Peoples and Atmosphere?
I listen to the last two, but not 2Pac. I can't explain why, really, but to me he's never been of the level that a Rakim or a CL Smooth reached. Probably the taint of the West Coast ~;)

Yeah, when visitng my brother in Sacramento California, I went to see ADD (A band from Sacramento), The Street Dogs (McColgan's new band) and Flogging Molly. That was awesome. Small, fenced in outdoor venue. I did not get up on stage, though. I did not want to get into much trouble while I as in a foreign country, but it was still a great concert nonetheless.

It's hardly black metal by today's standards. Proto-black, you might say.
