Things to remember when cooking
1)Pan lids also get hot in the oven they are mot magically immune
2)Rice expands when boiled.
This I forgot when cooking yesterday the result two burnt fingers and enough rice left over to feed ten people.
Anybody got any cooking stories?

I'm trying to think of funny anecdotes, but all I can cook is spaghetti, and it's rather idiot-proof...

When making coffee remember to add water, otherwise it's no good.

Okay if it happens once, but twice ... :embarassed:

A flatmate of mine at university, on his first day away from mommy, decided to boil an egg.

It would have made less mess had he added water to the saucepan.

I can't cook but in reaction to it I try to minimise the difficulty of the recipe when I have to. Besides a good stomach also helps.

My worst mistake was using a quarter bottle of amaretto instead of just a few sips when making tiramisu. But I don't regard adding to much alcohol to a desert as a mistake.

Remember to read the recipe properly, adding 6 tablespoons of salt to pancakes because you read the amount of baking powder required for the recipe instead of the amount of salt required still screws up yur pancakes even if you dump sugar into them afterwards.

Today I learned potatoes have to be in boiling water for about 20 minutes.

Should I start my own restaurant now?

"The Boiled Potatoe"

On the menu today:

Starter:
- two boiled potatoes;
Main Course:
- three boiled potatoes;
Dessert:
- one boiled potatoe.

At least worth a 3 Michelin-star rating...

Never put your full confidence in the accuracy of a written recipe. It will be wrong 1/3 times.

Remember to flip Pancakes... not Pizzas.
Don't use Unleaded Petrol when flame grilling in the kitchen.

Do not form the burgers by squishing them.

I know its not cooking, but I consider it important.

I was a cook in high school and all thru college (part time the last 2 years) all at nice restaurants, and it has been my experience that you should always remember to cook a little extra for the bartender and the hot waitress. A free beer and some nice company after your shift is always nice. ~D

Restaurant rule to live by, if your not going to make $30 bucks an hour then you should eat $30 bucks an hour! :laugh4:

While cooking at home it is best to know that baking chocolate is not the same as the candy bar kind. :sick:

Never tip any spice or herb containing jar over your dish if you are unsure whether this is a sieve-like lid on the top to stop everything falling in your dish. Something which I did forget when I was making a soup when I was eight, and proceeded to tip the whole contents of a jar of dried basil into the soup, which my mum promptly had to fish out with a tea strainer.

Why??? There's no such thing as too much basil :laugh4: Mmmmmmm!

But, still, good advice, though -- next time it may be chili ....

^^^^^All pretty much the same.

Oh, and another thing: always read the instructions for a recipe before you start making it. Something which I did not do one night, when I was making a stew. Having prepared everything at 9 pm (I like doing things late), and it was all boiling nicely in the pot, when I read step 5, which said "Leave to cook for 3 hours". I wasn't going to wait till midnight until I could eat it!

But if you must, keep your beer at least 3 feet away from the frypan.

When throwing stuff directly from the freezer into a frying pan, make sure to brush off any excess ice present and/or make sure to cover the pan, otherwise cleaning the whole kitchen ensues.
