I've had this problem a few times. Are they wooden walls? there maybe a spy inside your settlement.

nah its a big stone wall. how do i find the spy? thats what i thought it may be
You cant found the spy by yourself.
If you have a family member who haves good traits against syies, sent to that city

actually i looked up close at the gate and it looks like its been busted from a previous siege rather than just lying open
Wont having your own Noble spy in the town help to flush out the filthy bugger fighting his dirty underhanded war :P
it could also be a game glitch...i remember hearing something like this on the total war community forum.

I remember people saying Syracuse for some reason would often be affected by this 'bug'(?). Perhaps the Syracusian people at the time were too bone idle to fix anything. I'm not sure if other settlements were affected, but it's not something I've experienced.
If the gate can't be repaired, you're just going to have to politely tell the enemy to use another gate whilst this one is out of order. I'm sure they'll respect your situation, and if not, jab them in the eye with your swords or spoons, whatever you have on hand. They won't learn not to exploit the glitch again, but it'll make you feel better when they're piled up 10 high where the broken gateway is.

I believe putting a spy in your settlement helps and then using an assassin (not sure if you can use an assassin on your own settlement but it's just a suggestion)
Chances are you have a spy in the city. If he opened the gates for your enemies that´ll look like they were destroyed (take a close look when one of your spies opens an enemies´gates for you, they look the same). To get rid of a spy... you have to be lucky. Place an own spy in the city, in the hope to flush him out, some traits of your governors can also help. Be aware, though, that he´ll likely be thrown out quite a couple of times before he gets killed trying to sneak back in.

Hi
I to have seen references to a bug where a gate is stuck in a broken position. Speculation was that it was something to do with a beseiger having broken its way in but loosing.

The post about the Syracuse gate is true, I think if u let a faction take over it, after a while it used to get fixed, I know it was fixed in a patch.
Its definately a bug.
Spys wont help tbh, maybe only modding will help.
But if the spy open the gate he doesn't stop the boiling oil right? So station some fairly solid troops at the gate, the open gate attracts the enemy in and then you have a nice fry-up. The remaining frazzled enemy getting past this point get chewed by your defenders. Job's a good 'un.

I think this is true only for the older versions of the game. In 1.5 there is no boiling oil if your spy opens the gate for you.
