The Register article here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/19/ie7_release/) , complete with valid link to MS download site.
Anti-phishing, tabbed browsing... basically MS catching up with Opera & Firefox features.
Be careful; there are a few phony download sites that actually serve up Trojans instead of IE7.
edit to add: I have not personally downloaded this product, having learned to await further user reports
I hope you'll excuse me while I let other users beta-test this thing. I'll be sticking with Firefox for the moment.

I actually have the beta (version 3?). It's not bad, in fact, it's just like Firefox, but by habit, I still mainly go to Firefox.
I'll upgrade anyway...
Don't know why they bothered with the trojans, a vulnerability was just found.

I'll stay with Mozilla/Firefox, thank you.

In other browser related news, the beta of Firefox 2.0 is available to download.
I wonder which will be better? ~;)

Internet explorer pft. I will only take it when Microsoft use methods to force it up on us ~:P

IE7 does offer better phishing protection. Quite a nice package really. Of course they won't update it for another 5 years so it will be horrifically outdated soon enough.

Well technically that's already the case. Certain 'features' of M$ websites such as Hotmail don't function on Firefox or Opera, and Windows Update forces you to use IE. Combine this to the fact that the browser is integrated into the shell since Win98, and no one could be blamed for concluding that IE is being forced down their throats. Personally I've been using Firefox since when it was called 'Firebird' and didn't come with an installer but ran from a folder. Before that I was using Mozilla, both on Linux and Windows.

pah, IE 7 mucks up a computer's connection with a BT Home Hub, if any chaps have invested in one of these things. My father had awful trouble with it...

please, please, can we have a puking smiley ? This is a case where it would be really useful (and appropriate) :laugh4:
Yay for security in IE7, lol - it's sooooo fitting that there's a vulnerability in the much-trumpeted uber-secure thing, as soon as they launch it. :2thumbsup:

I guess I should have added the caveat that I, personally, have not downloaded IE7, having learnt my lesson about early adaoption with IE3 in 1996. I'll wait.

There are flaws in everything. Yes, even Firefox. They just aren't as apparent because fewer people look for them. I suspect they are even more obvious in IE because the average user is so much less computer literate than with other browsers.
Opera is best! Such a small userbase no one would bother attacking it...
But not with IE7! Security feature...
You're right about that. Probably the only way that M$ can increase 'security'.

I'll stick with Firefox 2.0 RC3... :2thumbsup:

Oh don't get me wrong... I am not exclusively using IE. I will get Firefox 2.0 when it is released.
For now IE7 is the new baby and Firefox 1.5.0.7 will have to wait for the more 'secure' needed internet activty.
..didn't come with an installer but ran from a folder.
Now, such software makes me really happy. It's annoying that any software just clogs up the system because the computer has to know all. I don't see why games should even thouch something like registry.
Some years ago when I used Windows98, I installed the system and made an image of that. Then I installed all software on a different partition. Windows started to choke (even after the normal defrag and systemrepairs). Then I installed the image again, basically making a computer that had no programs. Windows was fast and nearly all programs still worked.

While im not a fan of MS in any sense, ill give credit where credit is due... IE7 is a big step forward. Admittedly, MS are playing serious catch up to Firefox and Opera, but is this a bad thing? Both are excellent browsers and if the 80ish% of users who are currently using IE6, eventually upgrade to something a little better through WIndows Update, it can only be a good thing. Ive downloaded IE7 and have tried it for a day, but Ill still personally be sticking with Firefox.

Opera 9 rulls. Firefox 1.5 is second. I will never use IE; only if I can't choose the other two.
I've never liked Opera. When there's Firefox I don't see the need for it. I find it slightly overweight and containing 'features' that I never used. I may be biased though, as I remember the days when it was ad funded and came complete with banners or text ad links. This was reason enough to use Firefox.
I've installed IE 7 on a PC at work. Instead of using the explorer shell it has it's own shell (going back to the IE 3 days) which seems ok. Also if you open a windows explorer window and enter say "www.totalwar.org" nothing happens within that explorer window, and your default browser (in my case firefox) opens at that page. Before using IE 4/5/6 it would have opened it in the explorer window, turning that window into an IE window. This seems like a removal of the shell integration, or have M$ simply 'disabled' it?

Psht, the less people use Opera, the less hackers will try to hack it.:2thumbsup:

That's because some people use outdated and/or dangerous stuff to design their websites.~;)

I always liked Firefox but on weaker computer is just slow. Opera is the fastest and the most secured.:book:
Opera isn't that great, you drop my IE bookmarks you get. IE7 isn't perfect either. I'm using right now. My only bitch is that links still open a new browser window instead of a new tab. Go to all the trouble of putting in tabs and then not use them effectively. M$ yeesh! ~

According to the article, IE7 will be downloaded in an automatic update, so there's no reason to go out and download it myself. Am I reading this correctly?
That's right, Microsoft will be rolling it out to users via autoupdates over the next two months. And I don't think it's going to install automatically -- it will ask first. And you can re-install IE 6, so all is not lost.
Who knows, maybe they'll make something good of it. Personally, I will stick with the Fox for my browsing. Version 2.0 should be out tomorrow!

Opera is on the whole faster than Firefox, Mozilla and M$IE when running on Win32. Firefox does run faster on Linux though. The problem is that, in basic terms, extra security always comes at a performance cost. I use Firefox because I prefer it's simple but effective cookie control, clean lines and general flexibility. I dislike Opera's configuration options. I don't feel the need to switch to Opera to gain a few fractions of a second in speed either. I have to disagree with the quoted comment also. Firefox is not that much slower than Opera as to make it unusable on a low end machine. I do think that Firefox has got progressively slower with each new version however.

Hey I said TAKE THIS !!! (http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox)
Of course Opera's smaller operating base makes it safer simply because it is less of a target...
I coulda sworn I'd seen IE7 months ago... one of my customers was showing it off to me. My reaction was something to the effect of "Wow, it finally has features that FireFox has had for years. *yawn*" :laugh4:

I downloaded IE7, and I'm enjoying it very much. I tried downloading FF a few times, and it never worked. (my fault, I'm sure)
The tabs take a few minutes to figure out, but basically, if you click the center button on a link, you get the link in a new tab. Very useful if you're shopping, or if you're reading an article and see a hyperlink you want to check out AFTER you finish the current article. Say you are reading about new graphics cards at the org, and you want to check out prices on the new model at e-bay, you can just type"ebay" into the address bar, then hold down control and alt while you press enter, and ebay will pop up in a different tab.
Another very cool feature that I discovered accidentally is that you can "hide" the address bar and all of the buttons at the top of the screen. It's sort of like hiding your windows taskbar. If you put your cursor at the top of the screen, all of the buttons will slide down. If you move your cursor away from the top of the screen, the whole monitor is filled with just the web page. Sorry, but I can't tell you how to do this, as I have no idea how I did it myself.
The download is pretty fast, about 14mb at around 75k. However, the installation takes about twice as long as the download.
