View Full Version : which is your favorite medieval faction?
Which is your favorite faction and why? Mine is the byzantines because of the conflick with the turks and the fact that they were once the roman empire.
I realize that I forgot poland...please notify if I forgot any other factions.
I voted for England since they have that nice, cozy corner in the northwest of the map to sit back and relax and build up a trading empire. Or they could use the Isles as a base to stage their massive invasion of the mainland.
Btw, your spelling of Aragon is correct although I think that Novogorod should be spelt as Novgorod.

SCOTLAND the brave!
The HRE for the challenging starting position. Could add gothic unit but since I always start in early I hardly ever get the opportunity to use them.

A tie between the Italians, Turks and Germans.
Love the starting positions, and unique units (think Italian Infantry. Janissary heavies and Gothic Knights.)

Be warned, there are expert English longbowmen waiting in the shadows to sniper anyone who doesn't vote for the English. However, at about 11am-3pm they're usually down the pub drinking copious amounts of lager when they should be working, and from 3.30pm to 5pm they're watching 'Countdown' and 'Deal or No Deal' on TV so you might escape their usually deadly gaze at those times. They used to be builders.
Im sorry about the mispellings and forgotten factions...I havnt played in a looong time

Right now it's the Almohads. Though I like playing as the Byzantines and English too.

the byzantines cause they seem like they will be the hardest to play
Alas that I can only vote once! [sigh]
The Spanish remain my favorite faction in MTW, with the Egyptians right behind them. The Byzantines, Danes, and English round out my top 5.
Motep the great: You forgot the Sicilians. I doubt anyone would vote for them, though, so it's probably not a big deal. ~;p

Correction friend, they are, some people say in a way, but they are essentially the Roman Empire, minus the Rome. Its thanks to those 18th-19th century scholars that gave that derogatory term.
Its like saying, if Earth had an empire (maybe in the next 1000 years), and Earth was...ahem...taken or no longer liveable, we would still be called earthlings or humans by extraterrestrials (if their are any).
Mind the farfetched story...
I can't forget about the Moors and their lovely hazel-eyed women.

Camels, Almohads.
I have already apologized for forgotten nations...which is a 3 now. The polish, sicillians, and the danish.
Novgorod!!!!!!! They are awesome. Nothing compares. It is the best, that is why it is caps on the voting sheet.

Overall it wouldt have to be either Scots, Norse, Armenians or Serbs

I find the Hungarians to be very versatile - good cavalry options whilst maintaining the traditionally strong foot soldiers of christendom. That said, that's MTW and VI - I don't have MTW2 yet - need to wait until its release over this side of the pond.

I'm missing Venice... I know, I know Italy is there but that's just not the same for me. Venice had much stronger ties to Byzantium than say Milan oder Genoa.
So I would have cast my vote for Venice!
why doesn't anyone pick Novgorod, what's wrong with you people!!!???

Right now, it's the Turks. Playing a campaign as them right now, and I really enjoyed blitzing the Egyptians. ~D

Well, I voted for the Turks, because of all the cool hybrids - I like my Ottos and various horse archery-types, and of course the Janisseries when they are available. Also no hassle from the Pope.
But really my favourite faction is the one I happen to be playing at the time (right now that's Genoa in XL), but I also love the English (when you can get the Longbowmen out of the pub .... thanks for a good belly-laugh, ProfSpatula!!), the Mongol Horde and the Armenians in XL, and Irish and Welsh in VI. Oh, and Crimean Khanate in PMTW as well....
So, if I like horse-archer armies so much, wonder why I've never tried the Hungarians yet???? Hmmmm....:inquisitive:

Nice selection, macsen, by the way what is PMTW? Pagan Medieval Total War?

Pike & Musket Total War. You'll find it the Hosted Mods section of the forum.
As someone else said, it's usually the faction I'm playing at the moment... I had a good campaign with the Aragonese last week, that was fun. But now I've just installed xl, so I'm going bananas with all the new factions. Can't make up my mind. :juggle2:
...caved in, and voted for the Hungaryans. Versatile unit roster, fun position.
Holy Roman Empire for sure:charge:

My favourite would have to be either a Scandanavian faction or England, but in truth it's what ever faction I haven't played in a while.

The Bohemians, the Portuguese, and the Scots are all challenging while still being fun. (I actually have yet to win with the Bohemians, truth be told; but I still enjoy them! ) I like the Norwegians and Cumans as well. Just in case you were looking for recommendations. ~;)
Thanks for the pointers.
I've started several campaigns, mostly with small factions, but the ones i've gotten into and continued so far is the Norwegians and the Teutonic Order.
Fun. :)
okay...ill get back to playing the game this week...you bullies made me miss it...
As we should. :2thumbsup:
I've played vanilla MTW for some years; only got VI this spring. And that, my friend, speaks of of its replayability.
I always enjoyed Spanish campaigns. Nice hard beginning, what with the Moors and the Aragonese giving you headaches, and then a good, controlled base of operations. Expansion options in either France or North Africa. It's been a while, so I don't remember a lot about the troop types ...

yeah i kinda miss playin em, thsi on time i launched a 25,000 man(normal unit size) crusade that conquered the almohads, egyptiaans, turks, byzantines, novogorods, and the mongolians. I disbanded the crusade and conquered the papacy , poland, and hungary. Best invasion force Ive ever made.

I can. The GH is just annoying in the game (especially since I hate horsearchers).
I'd say either the Irish, Danes, Swedes, Huns, Poles, Scots or English. And that's near half of the factions in the game.
Ultimately I'd say English though, as there is no weapon better than the longbow.

I would have to say England. I like the isolation to build and have a small toe hold in France to get the units some experience.

Lancers

Only one vote for the Papal States.....must of been me :laugh4:
Not exactly the most fun game playing as them, too weak. Though for fun I edited some files and gave them huge starting armies, by the time the campaign was over, I had taken over about 93% of Europe, why send others on a Crusade when you can do it yourself!:charge:
I found playing Spain to be quite...eh...
Very nice selection of cavalry like the Lancers and such, but they just get so played out. Jinettes are nice and the same with Almughavars.
The other Catholic factions I like are either the English or the Italians.
Other than that most Catholic armies are...eh...
But when you play as the Moors or the Byzantines, then we're talkin'!

by far my favorite faction has to be Italy. Good navy and ok troops that get better in the Late period:yes:
The Byzantines!!!!!
or the russians, :charge: Boyars and kataphaktoi are very good!
It would be the Danes for me. Something about that viking blood that draws me in. I also love the axe troops.

Hmpf. Looks like only I and Mithrandir appreciate the greatness of the Almohads ~;)
Berber camels, Almohad Urban militia, militia sergeants, Faris, Murabutin javelineers...their only real weakness is their lack of a decent spear unit, but I work around that.
It feels kinda odd to send militiamen abroad to conquer the world, though.

i voted england, because they (geographically) are the closest to the mighty Scottish army
Hey, dont get me wrong, I do like the Almohads. But I like England and Italy better. But I still have to say, Byzantines are my favorites! They are killing in the polls, although England is not far behind.

I discovered their greatness last week. A whole campaign in a single night!
Pretty easy faction, just build up a decent economy and then AUM spam the enemy (not a lot the AI can do to stop over 100,000 AUM rampaging around the map) :laugh4:
Theyre not really a faction i see much of, most of my campaigns are down the east side of the map.
If this is about the best faction, then it's as follows in my, oh so humble, opinion:
1. The Unstoppable Turks
2. The Magnificent Egyptians
3. The Mighty Almohads
If it's about my favourite faction, then I would say:
1. The Unstoppable Turks
2. The Heroic Spanish
3. The Legendary Byzantines
Other factions worth a mention:
The Honourable Hungarians
The Indefatigable Novgorods
For a very interesting campaign, the Novgorod campaign (early) is very worthwhile. Even writing about it here makes me want to abandon my current campaign as the Turks and plunge into a Novgorod campaign again. The Byzantine high campaign is also very interesting. The best Hungarian, Spanish and Almohad campaigns are the early period ones IMHO. All of the Turks campaigns are interesting and very worthwhile. The Egyptians in high is also interesting, with some French neighbours to deal with. Of all the factions the Hungarians are the most unusual. Though a catholic faction they can train horse archers and their own horse archer unit the Szekely. This makes them an interesting catholic faction.

I'm having a lot of fun playing as the Brits. We're have the whole of Britain, most of France, northern and western Germany and Denmark under our well travelled sandle at turn 187.
