Do wooden walls have ramparts?

I saw an old screen shot of ramparts on a wooden wall, wasn't sure though, does anyone now if they're in or out?

I would certainly hope so, since timber defences usually also employed a rampart and ditch, but in the only screen of a wooden castle I've seen there's just a wooden wall (though fairly substantial).
